Southwest eliminates Bison from PTC volleyball tourney

Southwest Guilford edged visiting High Point Central 25-12 20-25, 14-25, 25-20, 15-6 on Monday in the first round of the Piedmont Triad 4A Conference tournament.

Bri Burgins had 14 kills and six blocks for the Cowgirls (12-11), while Lizzie Blair added seven kills and 12 assists.

Leaders for the Bison, who finished the season 7-14 overall, included Sadie Weston (nine kills, seven digs, four blocks), Bailee Hughes (nine digs) and Hayden Harris (27 assists, eight digs).

Southwest plays again Tuesday against Northwest Guilford at 6:30 p.m. at Ragsdale.



THOMASVILLE – East Davidson swept visiting Thomasville 25-21, 25-20, 25-17 on Monday in the opening round of the Central Carolina 2A Conference tournament.

Taylor McPhatter and Madison Gibson each had 11 kills to lead the Golden Eagles, who play again today at 5 p.m. against North Rowan.

The winner of that match will face either West Davidson or the winner of Monday’s Salisbury-Lexington match in Wednesday’s championship at 7 p.m. at East.



ASHEBORO — Ledford rolled past Western Guilford 25-19, 25-7, 25-14 on Monday in the first round of the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference tournament at Asheboro.

Siarra Walker had nine kills and three blocks, while Kayla Leach added eight kills, Jessie Hayworth had five kills and an ace, and Alis Styer had seven aces for the Panthers.

Ledford will face the winner of the Central Davidson-North Forsyth match tonight at 7 at Asheboro.




JAMESTOWN — Ragsdale’s Joliana Elias fired a 43 to earn medalist, while Glenn, Ragsdale, Southwest Guilford and High Point Central trailed Northwest Guilford in Monday’s Piedmont Triad 4A Conference match at Jamestown Park.

Northwest shot 146 as a team, followed by Glenn (151), Ragsdale (152), Southwest (155), Central (162) and East Forsyth (169).

Savannah Gilbert (48), Taylor Strassburg (49) and Bailey Coble (54) posted counting scores for Glenn, as did Brooke Fields (48) and Alexis Shuttle and Caroline Spillman (each 61), in addition to Ellis, for Ragsdale.

Sarah Phelan (48), Ashlyn Hyde (50) and Madison Harriman (57) were the counting scores for Southwest, while Lauren Giles (50), Ashlyn Day (56) and Jennifer Galanti (56) posted scores for Central.

The teams play again today in the 18-hole finale starting at 1 p.m. at Oak Hollow.



WALLBURG — Ledford posted the top three individual scores to roll past Central Davidson and Asheboro in a Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference match Monday at Meadowlands Golf Club.

Lexi Kershaw was medalist with a 35, followed by Meghan Holbrooks with a 42 and Julia Carroll with a 43 for team score of 120 for the Panthers.

Central Davidson was second with a 150, and Asheboro was third with a 173.




TRINITY — Daniel Newcomer and Hunter Dean each scored twice to lead Trinity past Wheatmore 4-0 on Monday.

Newcomer also had an assist for the Bulldogs, as did Jonathan Adkins and Alex Sedano. Chase Faircloth also provided strong defensive play.
