The T.W. Andrews football team played exceptionally well for three quarters. But, in the end, it was the final quarter that made all the difference.

Salisbury scored 22 unanswered points in the final 12 minutes — ending on a Steven Mazur 20-yard field goal with 4.6 seconds left — to claw from a 21-point hole and stun the Red Raiders 36-35 in the 2AA West Regional semifinals Friday night at A.J. Simeon Stadium.

“We had the game,” junior running back Marquell Cartwright said. “It was a tough loss. It just came down to the penalties and the little things that can make a game go bad.”

Trailing 35-14 with the ball heading to the fourth, the Hornets (11-2), seeded No. 2 in the Midwest and No. 2 in the West, scored on a 1-yard run by quarterback Brian Bauk, then, after recovering an onside kick, scored again on Max Allen’s 15-yard run.

Andrews (11-2), the No. 1 seed in the Midwest and West, pushed the ball to the Salisbury 29 but came up short on fourth-and-1 on its only drive of the quarter. The Hornets then pulled within 35-33 on a 45-yard TD pass from Bauk to John Mark Petty with 1:51 left.

Salisbury again kicked the onside kick and recovered at the Red Raider 38. It took six plays to move the ball to the 4 with 10 seconds left. The snap was low but the hold and the kick were good. Andrews’ final heave from deep its own territory as time expired was intercepted.

“There was a lot of pressure,” Cartwright said, trying to describe the fourth-quarter flurry. “We had to make it, but it just turned out that we didn’t do it.”

Bauk finished with 112 yards and three rushing TDs while completing 6 of 9 passes for 133 yards and one TD for Salisbury, which will face South Iredell in the regionals. Petty had 82 yards receiving.

Cartwright had 253 yards and two TDs — including an 80-yarder in the first half as the Red Raiders built a 21-0 first-quarter lead. Davie Wade also had 76 yards and two TDs rushing and one receiving TD. James Rogers had two tackles for a loss and a sack on defense.
