Preps: Headliners Challenge set

A number of area girls and boys basketball teams will take the court Friday and Saturday in the Headliners Challenge, sponsored by Domino’s Pizza, at Wheatmore High.

“The tournament continues to grow and continues to draw some of the top teams in the state,” said Kenny Carter, the former High Point Central girls coach and tournament organizer. “It’s exciting, and we hope to keep things rolling.”

The tournament, known as the Piedmont Challenge when it began in 2000, will raise money for Wheatmore, tournament host for the second straight year, and its athletic programs.

The Friday games are: Asheboro girls vs. Greensboro Day at noon; High Point Central girls vs. Winston-Salem Prep at 1:30; Asheboro boys vs. Greensboro Day at 3; Surry Central girls vs. Reagan at 4:30; Dudley girls vs. Southwest Guilford at 6; and New Hope Christian vs. West Forsyth at 7:30.

The Saturday games are: Wilkes Central girls vs. Ragsdale, noon; Wakefield girls vs. Greensboro Day at 1:30; High Point Christian boys vs. Wakefield at 3; Smith girls vs. Kinston at 4:30; Wheatmore girls vs. Northern Guilford; and Wheatmore boys vs. Northern Guilford at 7:30.


CONCORD – The Westchester Country Day boys fell 57-50 to visiting First Assembly on Monday.

Justice Cuthbertson scored 17 points while Josh Burton added 14 to lead the Wildcats (1-3), who were without one of their top players, Sadeeq Bello. They trailed 26-23 at halftime and couldn’t quite overtake First Assembly in the second half.

In the girls game, First Assembly opened a 13-point halftime lead and prevailed, 47-26. 

Megham Ingram scored 11 to the lead Westchester, which trailed 16-6 after one quarter and 27-14 at the break. Kayla Darr added six and no one else scored more than three.

The Wilcats play again Tuesday at home against Davidson Day.


Due to a reporting error, there was a mistake in Sunday’s T.W. Andrews girls basketball preview. Tonea Hairston, who was inadvertently listed twice, should have been listed as a returnee while Jazlyn Taylor, who was inadvertently omitted, should have been mentioned as a key newcomer. HIGH POINT -Southwest Guilford’s boys topped Wesleyan and the Trojans topped the Cowgirls in a tri-meet that also included Burlington Christian on Monday at the Wesleyan pool.

Southwest’s boys edged the hosts 66-28 and topped Burlington, 81-10. Wesleyan overwhelmed Burlington, 60-24.

In girls action: Wesleyan edged Southwest 54-42 and routed Burlington 80-8 while Southwest crushed Burlington 81-8.

Winners for the Southwest boys included Jake Barden (200 free, 2:02.12) and (500 free, 5:34.71), Liam Helms (200 IM, 2:228.12). John Min (100 butterfly, 1:04.39), Spencer Jordan (100 free, 59.26 and 100 backstroke, 1:05.44) Adam Mashburn (100 breast, 1:21.89). the 200 medley relay team and 400 freestyle relay team. Chad Smith was the only individual winner for Wesleyan, taking the 50 free in 24.89. Wesleyan also won the 200 freestyle relay.

Winners for the Southwest girls included Elizabeth Baker (200 IM, 2:26.75, and 500 free, 6:04.36), Mary Ray Coble (50 free, 25.84, and 100 breast, 1:14.72), Sarah Stahl (100 free, 1:04.70), Audrey Curtis (100 back, 1:12.73) and 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams.

Southwest’s winners were Lauren Overton (200 free, 2:22.47), Jessica Daniel (100 butterfly, 1:06.84) and the 400 freestyle relay team.
