Wesleyan rides six-run sixth inning to win

S.C. DIAMOND INVITATIONAL
BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. — Wesleyan Christian Academy broke open a tight game with six runs in the sixth inning to defeat Hammond (S.C.) 12-4 in the S.C. Diamond Invitational on Friday.
The Trojans improved to 9-1 with the win over Hammond, the top-ranked private school in S.C.
Ryan Clinch pitched the final 2.1 innings to secure the victory. Hunter White started and threw one inning, while Zach Michalski tossed 3.2 innings.
Johnny Rollins went 3-for-3 with an RBI for Wesleyan, while Michalski was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Lane Kowalski was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Wesleyan played Wrenn (S.C.) late Friday night. The Trojans close the event with a game against host Blythewood today at 1:30 p.m.

RAGSDALE 2, MILLBROOK 1
RALEIGH — Ragsdale edged Millbrook 2-1 in the Bobby Murray Invitational on Friday night at Raleigh Millbrook.
Tim Ambrose pitched 3.1 innings with six strikeouts to get the win for the Tigers (8-6). Matt Horkey tossed 3.2 innings with three Ks to earn the save.
Niko Orfanedes went 1-for-4 with a run for Ragsdale, while Horkey was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Corey Brandenburg was 1-for-3 with a run.
Ragsdale plays Raleigh Broughton today at noon in Cary. The Tigers will play another game today that will be determined by other results.

WHEATMORE 3, MCMICHAEL 0
GREENSBORO — Chase Saunders struck out 12 in a one-hitter as Wheatmore blanked McMichael 3-0 as part of the Greensboro Grasshoppers Spring Break Tournament late Thursday night at soggy, frigid NewBridge Bank Park.
Devon Holbrook finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Warriors, while Gareth McKee had an RBI singles.

HIGH POINT CENTRAL BASEBALL MILITARY APPRECIATION DAY
HIGH POINT — High Point Central Military Appreciation Day is set for April 17 at 7 p.m. vs. T.W. Andrews at High Point Central High School. It’s a day to recognize our soldiers, including fallen, retired and active duty while enjoying watching our national past time. UNION PINES 5, LEDFORD 4
ASHEBORO — Union Pines, the state’s fourth-ranked team in NCHSAA 3A, edged Ledford 5-4 on Friday.
Erik McSwain and Will Harrington won in singles for the Panthers (10-3). Jackson Somers-Landon McGinn and McSwain-Harrington prevailed in doubles.
Ledford plays host to Northeast Guilford on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

HICKS, WHITE NAMED AP PLAYERS OF THE YEAR IN N.C.
RALEIGH — Two of the nation’s top recruits are The Associated Press prep basketball players of the year in North Carolina for the 2012-13 season.
Oxford Webb senior Isaiah Hicks was named the top boys player and Charlotte Providence Day junior Jatarie White was named the top girls player Friday.
The 6-foot-9 Hicks, a North Carolina signee and McDonald’s All-American, earned 21 of a possible 22 votes from sports writers across the state. Fellow UNC signee and McDonald’s All-American Kennedy Meeks, a three-time AP all-state pick from West Charlotte, received the other vote.
On the girls side, the 6-3 White earned 11 votes. Weddington sophomore Stephanie Watts was second with six votes after averaging about 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Fellow AP all-state picks Haley Laughter of Asheville Carolina Day (three) and Catawba Bandys’ Madi Story (two) also received multiple votes.
Hicks and White were the Gatorade players of the year for North Carolina, while Hicks is a two-time AP all-state pick and was the only unanimous choice on this year’s teams.
Hicks averaged 24 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocks while shooting 62 percent from the floor.
On the girls side, White — a 6-3 forward — averaged 19 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.2 blocks and 1.8 steals to help her team win a fourth straight 3A North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association championship.
