West rallies for 10-10 tie in East-West football

The West scored 10 points in the fourth quarter – including a field goal as time expired – to tie the East 10-10 in the NCCA East-West All-Star football game Wednesday at Grimsley's Jamieson Stadium.

Luke Hayek of Shelby booted a 31-yard field goal as the clock ran out for the West, which had gotten into position to take a couple shots into the end zone before settling for the game-tying field goal.

Kenneth Purvis of Central Cabarrus ran for 70 yards and scored a 5-yard touchdown to lead the West. Purvis was aided by some key blocking by Ledford offensive lineman Josh Fox on a long run deep into East territory.

Logan Bradley of Forestview was also 7 of 14 passing for 96 yards for the West.

Diquon Cox of Richmond County ran for 82 yards and scored a 4-yard TD for the East, which scored on a 31-yard field goal by Nick Christiansen of Clayton midway through the second and again 11 seconds later, after the West fumbled, on Cox's TD to lead 10-0 into halftime.

Cox was chosen the game's Offensive MVP, while Demetri Sheridan of Lumberton was selected the Defensive MVP.

Brady Stover of Southern Guilford also participated for the West, while incoming Thomasville coach Wes Mattera, representing his former school, Edenton Holmes, coached for the East. Stover was injured early on and sat out the rest of the game.
