Red Raiders, Trojans net girls wins

T.W. ANDREWS GIRLS 76, WESTCHESTER COUNTRY DAY 20
HIGH POINT – Imani Watkins scored 22 points and T.W. Andrews built a big lead en route to a 76-20 win over Westchester Country Day School in the first round of the Sheetz Holiday Christmas Basketball Classic.
Jazlyn Taylor added 19 points followed by Santia Davis with 16 and October Campbell with 11 for the Red Raiders, who led 16-0 after one quarter. Meghan Ingram scored 11 points while Terra Johns added five to lead the Wildcats.
Andrews will face the winner of the Southwest Guilford-Southern Guilford game in the semifinals today at 6 p.m. in the Jim Coggins Gym, while Westchester will play the loser at 3 in the Annex Gym.
WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN GIRLS 34, HIGH POINT CENTRAL 20
HIGH POINT – Anna Massey and Holland Robinson each scored 10 points to help lead Wesleyan Christian past High Point Central 34-20 in the first round of the Sheetz Holiday Christmas Basketball Classic.
The Trojans led 13-3 after one quarter and 22-13 at halftime, as the Bison trimmed the margin. Kierra Currie scored eight points to lead Central.
Wesleyan will play the winner of the Western Guilford-Caldwell Academy game at 3 p.m. in the Jim Coggins Gym while the Bison will face the loser at 6 in the Annex Gym.
SOUTHERN ALAMANCE BOYS 66, T.W. ANDREWS 63
HIGH POINT – The Southern Alamance scored five straight points in the final minute to break free and edge T.W. Andrews 66-63 in the first round of the Sheetz Holiday Christmas Basketball Classic.
With the score tied 61-all, Southern handled the double-team defense and found A.J. Ellison for an easy layup with 45 seconds left. The Red Raiders missed a key 3-pointer and, following one made free throw by Southern and a timeout, turned the ball over.
The teams exchanged baskets in the final seconds, as Southern hung on for the win. Jalen Burnett scored 23 points to lead Southern while Dairyon Matkins added 20. Bennie Butler scored 20 points to lead Andrews while Chris Eatmon followed with 17.
Southern, which led 13-2 to start the back-and-forth game, will play the Myers Park-Western Guilford winner today at 4:30 p.m. in the Jim Coggins Gym, while the Red Raiders will face the loser at 4:30 in the Annex Gym.
SW GUILFORD GIRLS 67, SOUTHERN GUILFORD 30
HIGH POINT – Briana Burgins scored 24 points to help lead Southwest Guilford past Southern Guilford 67-30 in the first round of the Sheetz Holiday Christmas Basketball Classic.
Kennedy Porter added 12 points for the Cowgirls, who scored 15 of the game’s first 18 points, using tough defense and quick transition offense, and led 20-9 after one quarter. Kelena Morris played well inside for the Storm, finishing with nine points, while Haley Chandler added eight.
Southwest plays city rival Andrews today at 6 p.m. in the Jim Coggins Gym in the semifinals, while Southern faces Westchester Country Day at 3 in the Annex Gym.
WESTERN GUILFORD GIRLS 74, CALDWELL ACADEMY 46
HIGH POINT Four players scored in double figures for Western Guilford, as it cruised past Caldwell Academy 74-46 in the first round of the Sheetz Holiday Christmas Basketball Classic.
Karimah Dean scored 22 points while Letricia Smith added 21 to lead the Hornets, who led 19-6 after one quarter. Selena Lozada (15 points) and Deja Everett also scored in double digits. Hannah Houser scored nine points to lead Caldwell, followed by Megan Speckman and Lexie Newsome with eight each.
Western Guilford faces Wesleyan Christian in the semifinals today at 3 p.m. in the Jim Coggins Gym, while Caldwell plays High Point Central at 6 in the Annex Gym.
ASHEBORO COURIER-TRIBUNE INVITATIONAL
TRINITY 73, SW RANDOLPH 52
ASHEBORO – Brandon Earnhardt scored 26 points to help spark Trinity to a 73-52 victory over Southwestern Randolph in the first round of the Asheboro Courier-Tribune Invitational on Thursday.
Jarrod Rogers added 20 and David Newcomer had 12 as the Bulldogs improved to 9-0 after leading 39-27 at the half.
Trinity plays rival Wheatmore in a semifinal game today at 7:30 p.m.
WHEATMORE 63, ASHEBORO 56
ASHEBORO – Wheatmore’s boys defeated Asheboro 63-56 in the first round of the Asheboro Courier-Tribune Invitational on Thursday night.
Thwe Warriors advance to play Trinity, which beat Southwestern Randolph 73-52 in Thursday’s final first-round game, in today’s 7:30 p.m. semifinal.
Also Thursday, it was Jordan-Matthews 46, Providence Grove 19 and Eastern Randolph 59, Randleman 58.

LEDFORD GIRLS 49, SOUTH DAVIDSON 39
WALLBURG – Ledford’s turned a 3-point lead after the third quarter into a 10-point victory in the semifinals of the Newbridge Bank Classic on Thursday. The host Panthers play Southeast Guilford for the championship today at 6:30 p.m.
Emmalee Thomas led the Panthers with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Leigh Midkiff added 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Courtney Callicutt had 11 points.
SE GUILFORD GIRLS 53, EAST DAVIDSON 44
WALLBURG – Kayla Upshaw scored 17 points and Kara Shutt added 14 as Southeast Guilford’s girls topped East Davidson 53-44 in the semifinals of the Newbridge Christmas Classic on Thursday at Ledford High.
Kenja Hailey tallied 12 points for the Falcons, who advance to play Ledford for the title today at 6:30.
Bayley Plummer paced the Golden Eagles with 14 points. Lori Morgan added nine.
WEST DAVIDSON BOYS 66, SE GUILFORD 49
WALLBURG – Tyler Grooms poured in 17 points as the West Davidson boys downed Southeast Guilford 66-49 in the semifinals of the Newbridge Christmas Classic on Thursday at Ledford.
Grayson Taylor and Zach Queen added 13 points each for the Green Dragons, who advance to tonight’s 8 o’clock title game against the Ledford-Central Davidson winner.
Joshua Cruthfield led the Falcons with 13 points. Southeast plays South Davidson in a consolation game at 3:30, while East Davidson plays the Ledford-Central Davidson loser in a 5 p.m. consolation contest.
GIRLS CONSOLATION BRACKET
N. DAVIDSON 67, C. DAVIDSON 48
WALLBURG – North Davidson hit 15 of 16 free throws and scored 23 points in the fourth quarter while pulling away to a 67-48 victory over Central Davidson in a girls consolation game at the Newbridge Bank Classic.
The Black Knights led by just three before the late surge.
Emily Rhodes scored eight of her team-high 18 points and Taylor Darrow had six of her 17 in the final period for North, Rhodes went 6 for 6 from the free throw line in the fourth while Darrow was 4 of 4.
North jumped to a 19-9 lead in the first quarter but Central used balanced scoring to cut the margin to three at the half. Paige Chavis led Central with 19 and Chandler Young added 10.
LEXINGTON 61, WEST DAVIDSON 42
WALLBURG – Jasmine Carter scored 22 points and Emerson Hayes added 18 as Lexington topped West Davidson 61-42 in a girls consolation game at the Newbridge Christmas Classic on Thursday.
Emily Hutchinson led the Green Dragons with 12 points and Alicia Middleton added 11.
BISHOP BOYS 51, ATLANTA PAIDEIA 47
ATLANTA – Nick Efird scored 15 points, including the eventual game-winning basket, as Bishop McGuinness’ boys downed Atlanta Paideia 51-47 in the first round of the Westminster Holiday Classic on Thursday.
Kevin Weckworth added 15 points for the Villains (5-2), while Will Webster tallied 11.
Jonathan Garrett led Paideia (0-8) with 16 points.
HPCA BOYS 59, MILLER SCHOOL 50
RALEIGH – Mike Kobani scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the High Point Christian Academy boys downed Miller School 59-50 in the first round of the High School OT Holiday Invitational at Raleigh Broughton High School on Thursday.
Diante Baldwin chipped in eight points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals for the Cougars (11-1), while Isiah Gill tallied 13 points and Jackson Kent grabbed 12 rebounds and scored two points. Alvah Phillip finished with seven points and nine boards for HPCA, which plays the Greenfield-New Hapton Prep winner today at 5:40 in round two.
RAGSDALE GIRLS 45, NORTHEAST GUILFORD 36
GREENSBORO – Mikayla Pettyjohn scored 22 points as Ragsdale’s girls defeated Northeast Guilford 45-36 in a consolation-round game of the Timco Invitational on Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Godwin Dooley added nine points for the Tigers (4-8), while Jordan Quick finished with seven points and nine rebounds.
Dinah Neal led Northeast with 16 points.
GREENSBORO DAY SCHOOL BOYS 84, RAGSDALE 62
GREENSBORO – Jonathan Terry scored 22 points and Reggie Dillard added 20 as the Greensboro Day School boys topped Ragsdale 84-62 in the semifinals of the Timco Invitational on Thursday night at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Christian Hairston had 11 points for GDS (19-0).
James Stepp led the Tigers (5-7) with 16 points. Joseph Bryant added 14.
Greensboro Day advances to today’s 8 o’clock final. Ragsdale plays in the 3rd-place game today at 4.
NEW HOPE CHRISTIAN GIRLS 62, ST. FRANCES 45
THOMASVILLE – Sarah Beal pumped in 19 points and Katherine Harris added 15 as the New Hope Christian girls defeated St. Frances 62-45 on Thursday night.
Paris Johnson scored 14 for New Hope (12-0).
