Westchester takes 6-shot lead in NCISAA tournament

Hardin Councill fired a 1-under 70 to tie for the lead, helping Westchester Country Day take a 6-shot lead after the first round of the NCISAA 2A tournament at Talamore Golf Resort. 

The Wildcats finished with a 308 total. Cary Christian is in second at 314 going into today’s final round. St. David’s is third at 315, followed by O’Neal at 317, Asheville Christian (319), Westminster Catawba Christian (324), Rocky Mount Academy (327) and Carolina Day (328).

“The pins were put in some tough locations, so we know what we have to do tomorrow,” Westchester coach Adam Schwartz said. “The competition is great. The course is great. The conditions were great. Now, we have to go out and execute.”

Councill and Archer Price of Gaston Day are tied individual lead. Other counting scorers for the Westchester included Thomas Walsh (72), Russell Marion (79) and Jake Weiland (87).

“I’m really happy with the way we fought,” Schwartz said. “Hopefully we’ll play the same way and get four good scores.”

The Wildcats begin teeing off at 11:30 a,m. today.



SOUTHERN PINES – Newton-Conover golfers are one-two in the individual standings and the Red Devils are on top in the team race after Monday’s first day of the 28th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2A men’s golf championships at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club.

 Alex Hefner of Newton-Conover had a one-under par 70 on the first day and teammate Trey Burton is in a three-way tie for second at 72.  Also knotted two strokes back are Rielly Morton of Richlands and Nathan Curry of West Davidson.

Newton-Conover had the only sub-300 team score of the day at 299 to lead the way, eight shots ahead of North Lincoln art 307.  Shelby is third at 313 and Salisbury, the defending team champ, is fourth at 316. The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total. West Davidson is in eighth at 327.



FOXFIRE VILLAGE —  Bryce Hendrix of Greenville D.H. Conley leads the individual standings and a tight race is brewing in the team competition after Monday’s action in the 28th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3A men’s golf championships at the Foxfire Golf and Country Club.

 Hendrix fired a four-under par 68 Monday to open up a three-shot lead over Charlotte Catholic’s Ethan Mead and Will Blalock of Forestview. Blalock finished in a tie for eighth in last year’s championships.

Defending team champion Gastonia Forestview had the only sub-300 round among 3-A teams on Monday with a 297 and leads Charlotte Catholic by four shots. South Point is at 304, seven shots off the pace, with three teams knotted at 309, including Hickory, Waxhaw Marvin Ridge and Burlington Williams.



 PINEHURST— Ben Griffin of East Chapel Hill fired a four-under par 68 on Monday to grab a three-stroke lead in the 77th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4A men’s golf championships at Pinehurst No. 8.

The championship is being contested on a par-72 layout set at 6,698 yards for the NCHSAA event.

Griffin, who tied for 10th in last year’s tournament, is three shots ahead of Northwest Guilford’s Drew Johnson and has a four-shot lead over a trio of golfers, including Seth Gandy of Cornelius Hough, Luke Thalman of Charlotte Myers Park and Josh Martin of Southern Pines Pinecrest.

Pinecrest, with four players shooting 73 or better, tallied a 291 to hold a six-shot lead in the team standings over Charlotte Myers Park at 297.  Hough is in third at 299 and defending team champ Broughton fourth at 303. The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.




Three area schools face NCHSAA second-round softball tests today at 7 p.m. Southwest Guilford visits West Forsyth and Glenn travels to Southeast Guilford in 4A, while East Davidson plays host to West Stanly in 2A.



In NCISAA 3A softball, top-seeded HPCA plays host to No. 8 Gaston Christian in today’s 5 p.m. second-round game.

Wesleyan, the No. 3 seed, plays host to No. 6 Wake Christian today.




Four area teams will play in the second round of the NCHSAA playoffs today at 7 p.m.

In 4A, High Point Central visits Northwest Guilford and Glenn plays host to Reagan.

In 2A, East Davidson plays host to Cuthbertson and Trinity travels to West Stokes.



In round two of NCISAA 3A baseball, second-seeded High Point Christian Academy plays host to No. 7 seed Covenant Day today at 4:30 p.m. Fourth-seeded Wesleyan Christian Academy plays host to No. 5 Charlotte Country Day and today.

In NCISAA 2A baseball, top-seeded Westchester Country Day School plays host to fourth-seeded Davidson Day in the semifinals.
