Cowboys corral Mustangs
The Cowboys were off and riding early and never let up, as the Southwest Guilford baseball team scored seven runs in the first inning in defeating visiting Parkland 18-0 in five innings Tuesday night.
The Cowboys started things off quickly when Matt Dale hit a bases-clearing triple in the first to put Southwest Guilford up 2-0. The Cowboys added five more runs to take a 7-0 lead after the first.
Parkland starting pitcher Danny Gonzalez was chased after facing eight batters when he could not record an out and gave up four earned runs in the first inning.
“We haven’t had an offensive inning like that all season,” Cowboys coach Reid Holmes said. “The guys have been working hard and it’s nice to see success coming out of it.”
Southwest (3-8, 2-4 PTC) added five runs in both the second and fourth and one in the third to build an 18-0 lead.
Nishant Polisetti went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs for the Cowboys. Dale also went 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Everyone in the starting lineup for Southwest reached base at least once.
Justin Nottle got the win on the mound for Southwest and silenced any Mustang opposition. Nottle held Parkland hitless through three innings and struck out two.
Southwest Guilford plays again Wednesday at Southern Guilford, while the Mustangs (0-10, 0-5 PTC) travel to Ragsdale on Thursday.
“We hope this win propels us and gives us momentum going into the second half of conference play,” Holmes said.
