Your View: Thanks to cold-weather service providers

Jan. 14, 2014 @ 07:17 PM

What about you?
How thankful I am on these cold nights and days for those who provide services for us. A special thanks for those who provide outdoor services. Can you feel yourself at the top of a utility pole with the wind blowing or a fireman pumping out someone’s basement or directing drivers around large sheets of ice? Plumbers working on frozen ground that becomes wet as the ground melts.
The warmer it becomes, the more the problems become. I did not forget the police, mail and newspaper carriers. I thank you and most citizens do, also.

Why do we keep defying God?
I was really proud when I saw the two gay guys getting married at the New Year’s parade. It’s about time we showed God he has not right to put his nose into our private lives.
It’s time to take control of our lives without having any guilt about what’s wrong. We should go with who we desire without marriage. Why have a commitment?
We are still number one in everything we do — in schools, employment, etc. What do we need a God for? Everything has gotten better since we got rid of Him. Let the good times roll, I say.
Even the new pope thinks we should do this. Who are we to argue with the pope?
Does this letter bother anyone? I doubt it.
So keep on shaking your fist in God’s face. It’s the new normal.
If He doesn’t exist, you have nothing to worry about. If He does exist, then what? We will just have to wait and see or maybe you should read the Bible and find out.

A bill to extend benefits for long-term unemployed is making its way through Congress. How will this benefit or hurt the unemployed and the economy. • TaxpayerOne: It’s a difficult situation. If there were enough jobs to go around I’d advocate for ending it after 8 weeks. As it is, many who receive it do want to work but cannot find jobs. On the other hand, what’s wrong with asking those receiving benefits to contribute via community service?

Advocates of drilling for oil and natural gas off the N.C. coast are again pushing for Obama administration approval to allow drilling. Is offshore drilling safe? Should it be permitted?
