Your View: Shooting shows need for gun control measures

Dec. 17, 2012 @ 12:26 AM

As are all educators, I am dedicated to an effective, caring and safe learning environment for students. The Sandy Hook tragedy escalates the need for all concerned citizens to oppose the NRA lobby and demand speedy legislation to prohibit the sale of semi-automatic and automatic weapons.
I have been a hunter, and I do own firearms.  No one outside law enforcement or the active military needs combat-type weapons to be a sportsman or to protect their person or property.  A standard revolver or shotgun, for the typical citizen who chooses to own one and be trained in its safe use, can be an equally effective deterrent.
The growing list of these horrific events, this last the worst of all, requires all voters to pressure their elected officials at the state and federal levels to ban the continuing sale of this deadly arsenal.

Please help stop child abuse
The terrible tragedy of Jovan Belcher’s murder-suicide in New York is a moment in time that causes a step back. A tragedy such as this, as most, causes us to focus on what, if anything could have prevented it.  However, there are many ways that this could have been avoided.  We must remember that Zoey, who is an 3-month-old orphan, was a victim of domestic violence. Belcher took the life of Zoey’s mother.
Most abused and neglected children never come to the attention of government officials.  There are four types of abuse: physical, sexual, emotional and neglect. Just because it’s not violent doesn’t mean it’s not abuse. Neglect is by far the most common form of child abuse.
Throughout North Carolina, thousands of children come to the attention of the court because of this type of abuse.  You can become a Guardian ad Litem and speak for child who comes to the attention of the courts and make a difference in a child’s life.
The Guardian ad Litem Program has a great responsibility to protect a child from further victimization the can result from multiple placements.  To become a trained volunteer contact the Guardian ad Litem program now for our next training session in February 2013.  336-412-7580 or or or
