Your View: Can you relate to President Obama’s lifestyle?

History repeated itself at the inauguration when the Emperor fiddled while Rome burns.
In view of our enormous debt, increasing deficits and weak economic growth, a true leader would have settled for an austere swearing-in ceremony, thereby saving the taxpayers tens of millions of dollars and setting an example for the country. Fat chance!
Hosting state dinners costing the taxpayers as much as $4,700 a plate while food stamp rolls explode seems to be a hallmark of this administration. Our president says he can relate to the average American, but if you believe that you have been drinking too much Kool-Aid. How many of us get free housing, free food, free transportation and an annual salary of $400,000. Add to that, servants, chefs, maids and huge personal staffs not to mention his two children go to a private school that costs $37,000 per year per child. Are you relating yet?
Four years ago unemployment was 7.8 percent. It is the same today, but some eight million have dropped out of the workforce and the true rate is 12.8 percent. When Obama took office, gasoline was at $1.84 per gallon and he said that price was caused by a recession. Today gasoline is $3.55 per gallon or more and the president says the economy is improving. Doublespeak? Go figure.
With our national debt at $10.8 billion four years ago, Obama characterized President Bush as unpatriotic and irresponsible. In just four years, the national debt is now $16.5 trillion. What does that make President Obama?
Just recently, Obama, with his gigantic entourage, travelled to Florida to play golf with Tiger Woods. Since the Government Accounting Office has determined that it costs the taxpayers about $175,000 just to get the president’s plane off the ground, can you imagine the ultimate cost of that junket?

President’s statements push me to respond
President Obama’s recent statements have finally pushed me to the brink.  He says the sequester was not his idea; unfortunately there is a written record that it was created by Jack Lew and personally signed by Obama.  What is it that causes this man to lie through his teeth to his supporters as well as his detractors?
Worse, what is it that causes his supporters to accept being routinely lied to? And what is it that causes all of us to tolerate this treatment which will cause all of us, no matter what financial status or political party, to pay significantly more taxes to the federal government?  To paraphrase Obama’s understanding of Shakespeare: “The fault, dear Brutus, lies not in their stars but in that they (we, the people!) are underlings.”

• Why don’t they just tax stupidity, ignorance and parasites?
• Why don’t they put a large tax on liquor and beer, like they did cigarettes?

Guilford County Schools has created a task force to examine school security in response to the Newtown, Conn., shootings. What suggestions do you offer? In 30 words or less (no name, address required), email us your thoughts to letterbox@hpe.com.
