Your View: Don’t waste time renaming Allen Jay school
In the Dec. 27 Enterprise in the Local section there was an article about the potential changing of the name of Allen Jay School by the Guilford County School Board. I agree with Mayor Bernita Sims and at-large member Becky Smothers. The name should not be changed.
It is Allen Jay; it has always been Allen Jay. It is a part of the history of Guilford County. I’m thankful that the campus is going to be used again, but to change the name is ridiculous. Why spend all the time and effort to change a name of a school campus that already has a name and again has had this name since it was created?
Doesn’t the school board have more important things to do and discuss other than change the name of the campus? The area around the school is known as the Allen Jay community. I think that school board members need to spend their time on things that the school system needs. Why did it take so long to get a new roof on the Allen Jay Elementary School? The school had leaking roofs in classrooms and cafeteria. Did the school board make this a priority? No, they waited months and months to get this done. Was it done over the summer break? No, they waited until school was already in session to do this.
I think that the school board members should spend their time on what is needed for the schools in their system and the children of these schools instead of trying to rename a school campus that already has a name. What a waste of taxpayers’ money and the school board’s time.
You could become pincushion person of week
I’ve noticed for the last few years when people do things or write things, they open themselves to criticism or scrutiny, thus becoming “The pincushion person of the week.”
It makes us feel compelled to point out other people’s faults or expressions. I have something for people to contemplate:
1) Get religion before you go to prison.
2) DNA will free you or not.
3) Remember the Golden Rule: He who has the gold makes the rules.
Finally, in the words of St. Francis de Sales, instead of making resolutions for 2013, try to keep the one’s we made for 2012.
