Jack Holmes Campbell
WINSTON-SALEM — Jack Holmes Campbell, age 92, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Care on Saturday, March 9, 2013, with family by his side.
He was born on February 4, 1921, in Cañon City, Colorado, and grew up in Austinville, Virginia. He attended the Tennessee Military Academy in Sweetwater, Tennessee, and Duke University, where he played baseball. Throughout his life he remained an avid fan, loyal supporter and benefactor of Duke athletics and academics.
After college and four years in the U.S. Army, Mr. Campbell returned to Tomlinson Furniture Company in High Point. In 1955, he was asked to become the president and general manager of the new N.C. Schoonbeck Company, which merged with Henredon Furniture in 1959. As a Henredon executive for the remainder of his long career, Mr. Campbell was a respected leader in the vibrant furniture industry.
Mr. Campbell was also actively involved in the community life of High Point and contributed to the development and expansion of many civic, charitable, financial and educational organizations in the area. He served on many boards, often as chair, and received numerous awards and commendations. He was a devoted and committed member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, as well as founder and longtime board member for Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, where he spent the last 20 years of his life.
One of the enduring passions of his life was the game of golf. He was one of the founders and developers of Willow Creek Golf Club in High Point. Willow Creek was the home of the Henredon Classic LPGA Golf Tournament and the Senior Hall of Fame Tournament, both of which he helped to create.
Most importantly, Jack Campbell was a man who valued family, community and friends above all else. He forged deep personal relationships with both friends and co-workers and was always the loving husband and patient parent. His wisdom, humor and compassion drew people to him. Everyone who knew him felt they were better for having spent time with him. As one longtime friend said recently, “He had a kind of magic about him that made everyone want to be the best person they could be.”
His family will miss him and are grateful for the wonderful life they shared. He was looking forward to being reunited with Ruth Campbell, his beloved wife of 65 years, who preceded him in death by six years. He was also preceded in death by his sole sibling, Martha Jane Campbell. He is survived and celebrated by his daughter, Jenny Campbell of Charlotte; and his son Jack Campbell Jr. and wife Susan of Winston-Salem; four granddaughters whom he adored, Hadley Ross and her husband Paul Maliszewski of Washington, DC, Caroline Ross of Charleston, SC, and Elizabeth Campbell and Sarah Campbell, both of Asheville; and two great-grandsons, Elliot and James Maliszewski of Washington, DC.
Jack’s friends are invited to gather with his family on Saturday, March 16 between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Arbor Acres (1244 Arbor Rd, Winston-Salem) to share their stories and remembrances of Jack’s life.
