Ethel Gray Strickland
HIGH POINT — Mrs. Ethel Gray Strickland, 81, of 1117 Cedrow Drive transitioned to her heavenly home on Friday, March 8, 2013.
Ethel was born on December 28, 1931, to the late William Franklin Gray and Truly Murrell Gray in Guilford County. A lifelong resident of High Point, she attended the local schools and retired from Montlieu Elementary School where was employed as a custodian. She was a faithful member of New Bethel Baptist Church where she was a Church Mother and a member of the Missionary Circle.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny William Strickland; two brothers and two sisters.
Surviving relatives include four sons, Tony (Daisy) McCorkle of Archdale, Hubert (Joyce)Strickland of Greensboro, William (Verna) Strickland of High Point and James Strickland of High Point; three daughters, Virgellen (Wilton) Bynum of Lewisville, Sandra Thomasson and Sally Strickland of High Point; brother, Harry (Becky) Gray of Durham; sisters, Dorothy (Paul) Jones, and Lillian Alston, all of High Point; sixteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1116 Montlieu Ave. Family visitation will be at the church on Tuesday, from 12 to 1 p.m. and other times at the residence. Davie Austin Ballard
THOMASVILLE — Mr. Davie Austin (Dave) Ballard, 82, a resident of 439 Old Farm Road, died Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Thomasville Medical Center. He was born in Thomasville, March 5, 1931, a son of Alexander Lawrence (Buddy) Ballard and Lucy Mae Armstrong Ballard and was a lifelong resident of Davidson County. He grew up on Taylor Street and loved the Hog Eye Boys. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a retired brick mason and loved to rabbit hunt. He was a former member, Sunday school teacher and Deacon at First Baptist Church and was currently a member of Carolina Memorial Baptist Church where he had served as a Sunday school teacher and Deacon. He also had served as a Sunday school teacher for the Thomasville Fire Department. He loved church and wanted everyone to know that on July 18, 1957, he was born again in Christ. On July 26, 1952, he was married to Miss Edith Sebastian, who survives of the home. Also surviving are two sons, Danny Keith Ballard of Thomasville and Randy Dean Ballard and his wife Lauren of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Connor Jordan Ballard and Griffin Tate Ballard of Charlotte; two sisters-in-law, Polly Hill and Phyllis Sebastian, both of Thomasville; a brother-in-law, Arthur Roy (Dickie) Sebastian of Thomasville; nieces, Sherry Stewart, Kathy Darr, and Betsy Brooks; nephews, Tim Ballard, Tommy Ballard, and Robert Ballard; cousins, Franklin Hall and his wife Ola Mae and Ann Hall, both of Thomasville. Also surviving is a special friend, Diane Dalrymple. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lauren Nicole Ballard; two brothers, Billy Lawrence Ballard and Bobby Alexander Ballard; two sisters-in-law, Linda Ballard and Mary Frances Ballard, and by a brother-in-law Richard Hill. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Carolina Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Bynum Orr and the Rev. Michael Vipperman. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The body will remain at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will be at the funeral home Monday from 6 until 8 p.m. and other times at the residence. Pallbearers for Dave will be Dale Atwood, Chan Creasman, Danny Williamson, Trey Williamson, Bobby Williamson, and Ricky Russell. LEXINGTON — Mary Drake, 90, died March 9, 2013, at Lexington Health Care, where she was a resident. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lexington City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home.
Laverne Israel Hendrix
HIGH POINT — Mrs. Laverne I. Hendrix, age 94, died Saturday, March 9 at Westchester Manor, where she had been a resident since last November.
A native of Buncombe County, Laverne was born November 10, 1918, a daughter of the late Tharman Loftis and Flora Belle Young Israel of Chandler. She received her B.A. and Master’s Degree from Western Carolina University and did post graduate work at the University of Tennessee. Laverne worked with Buncombe County and Knoxville Tennessee City schools, retiring in 1981 from High Point public schools after 42 years of service.
She was a member of Beta Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Society International, National Education Association, and Retired School Personnel. Mrs. Hendrix was a member of Springfield Friends Meeting and the Martha Jay Sunday school class. In 1940, Laverne married Dr. Dan B. Cooke, who died March 25, 1965. She married Charles William Hendrix on December 18, 1968. Charles died August 12, 2008.
Laverne is survived by one daughter, Rebecca Ayers and her husband Dick of Pleasant Garden.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends, at the cemetery, immediately following the service.

Harley “Nick” Rose
WOOSTER, OHIO — Harley D. “Nick” Rose, age 78, of Wooster, went home to be with the Lord and to be together again with his wife, Friday, March 8, 2013, at his home with his family by his side following a short illness.
Services will be Tuesday, 1 p.m. at Custer-Glenn Funeral Home, 2284 Benden Dr., Wooster with Pastor Eric Fairhurst officiating followed by interment at Sherwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Wooster.
Visitation will be 2 hours prior (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.) to services on Tuesday at the funeral home.

He was born in Sutton, West Virginia, on August 28, 1934, to Elrige and Elizabeth (Whystell) Rose and married Nina C. Miles on August 18, 1956. She preceded him in death in 1996.
He retired from General Motors after many years of service and then spent his summers working at the Wooster Country Club golf course for 17 years.
He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and mostly was a devoted husband and father and grandfather who always placed his family first.
He is survived by a daughter, Pamela R. (David) Meshew of Wooster and a son, Randy E. (Paula) Rose of Thomasville, North Carolina; grandchildren, Courtney Meshew of Wooster, Joseph and Kevin Rose and families of North Carolina and Jennifer Whitehead of Chillicothe, Ohio; 7 great-grandchildren; a sister, Belva Bee and a brother, Jack (Neva) Rose, all of Wooster; many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Flack; 3 brothers and 6 sisters.
