Thelma Jean Manns Byerly
ASHEBORO — Thelma Jean Manns Byerly, 78, of Asheboro, NC, departed this earth October 8, 2013. Born in Asheboro, NC, on October 25, 1934, the daughter of Arthur Williams Manns and Lydia Velna Hinshaw. She attended Davidson Townsend High School in Davidson County. Jean was preceded in death by her parents and son Samuel Eugene Byerly. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading, bible study, teaching and being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Survived by five sons, Allen Byerly and wife Gale of Kernersville, NC; Ronald Byerly and wife Jannette of High Point, NC; Dean Byerly and wife Sherry Lyn of Chadbourn, NC; Boyd Byerly and wife Wanda of Seagrove, NC; Nathan Byerly and wife Cyndee of Jacksonville, FL; two daughters Melita Wright of Tabor City, NC and Sherry Shaw of Mt. Gilead, NC. Jean is also survived by two brothers, William (Bill) Manns and Margaret of Trinity, NC; Robert (Bob) Manns and wife Mona of Trinity, NC; and two sisters Louise Newsom and husband Ronnie of Denton, NC and Rebecca (Becky) Hoover and husband Johnny of Reidsville, NC.
Jean is known as Grandma B to 17 grandchildren, Michael Wright, Tabor City, NC: Charity Byerly Herrmann, Springfield, MO; Kevin Wright, Holly Springs, NC; Rodney Byerly, High Point, NC; Patience Byerly Absher, Kernersville, NC; Johnathan Byerly, Raleigh, NC; Mark Byerly, Blacksburg, VA; Justin Ward, Whiteville, NC; Tiffany Byerly, Greenville, NC; Ethan Byerly, Dallas, TX; Danielle Byerly, Seagrove, NC; Leslie Ward, Chadbourn, NC; Emily Byerly, Jacksonville, FL; Cody Shaw, Mt. Gilead; Julianna Byerly, High Point, NC; Brianna Shaw, Mt. Gilead, NC; Ysabella Byerly, High Point, NC. There are also six great-grandchildren, Caleb Absher, Ezra Byerly, Benjamin Byerly, Braelyn Wright, Elodie Herrmann and Seth Absher.
Ms. Byerly requested no flowers and that memorial gifts be given to the mission programs of Sunset Avenue Church of God, Asheboro, NC, or Faith Church of Kernersville, NC. She also suggested Hospice of Forsyth County and Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro, NC.
A celebration of her life will take place on Saturday, October 12, 2013, at Sunset Avenue Church of God at 2:00 p.m. Afterwards the family will receive friends in the Family Life Center.

LEXINGTON — Clyde Gerald Cooper, 78, of N. County Home Road, died Monday, October 7, 2013, at his home. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, October 10, 2013, at Grace Missionary Alliance Church. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home.
J. Annette W. Gordon
LEXINGTON — Judith Annette “Aunt Ann” Gordon passed away Thursday October 3, 2013, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was 70 years old.
Annette was born on June 25, 1943, to Ruby Gaynell and Dobin Wright of Thomasville. She attended Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church and knew Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She worked for Kayby Mills on Pineywood Street in Thomasville for 20 years. Aunt Ann also loved to bake. She became a successful caterer for eight years. She had a very caring heart and put a lot of love into everything she made.
Annette was known for her beautiful smile that would light up a room. She was a beautiful person inside and out.
Annette is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Colon Gordon. Also her sister and her husband Brenda and Billy Duncan.
Surviving are her daughter Tamoria Brown; granddaughter Breanna Tuttle of Lexington; nephew Gary (Buddy) Duncan of Trinity and fiancé Dana and her son Tyler Eaves (her little helper) who loved her very much, and Tracy Freeman of Thomasville, who was like a daughter to her.
Annette had lots of close friends who love and will miss her. She was a special lady.
A memorial service will be held Thursday Oct. 24 at 6:00 p.m. at Near Calvary Freewill Baptist Church, 335 Lee Smith Rd., Lexington. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the building fund at Near Calvary Freewill Baptist Church.
Rev. John Charles Gwaltney, Sr.
WINSTON-SALEM — Rev. John Charles Gwaltney, Sr. 71, of Aztec Drive, passed away Saturday, October 5, 2013, in Winston-Salem. Born on May 9, 1942, in Statesville to Jay C. and Agnes Rowe Gwaltney, he had made this area his home for most of his life. He was Minister of Music at Beck’s Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and was a US Air Force veteran serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis. John began his ministry in Charlotte and Ft. Mill, SC, and served as minister of music and youth minister in several locations throughout the Triad. His love of music, youth ministry, and senior citizen ministry was his passion. He blessed every one with his singing voice and vibrant personality. His hobbies were classic cars and electronics. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Ken Morgan.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Kaye Dulin Gwaltney of the home, daughter, Jennifer Lynn Gwaltney Perkins and husband Kenny of Concord; son, John Charles Gwaltney, Jr. of High Point; sister, Kay Morgan of Harrisburg, and his grandsons, Branson Perkins and Caleb Perkins.
Funeral services will be on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Rich Fork Baptist Church with Dr. Karl Minor and Pastor Michael Bowers officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home, 122 W. Main Street, Thomasville, NC. The family suggests that memorials be made to the American Heart Association, 101 Centreport Dr. Suite 130, Greensboro, NC 27409 in Rev. Gwaltney’s name.

Bonyiar Spencer McCort
SOPHIA — Bonyiar Spencer McCort passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 13, 2013. She was born in Sophia, N.C., to Stanley and Ethel Spencer on August 22, 1927. She was one of eight 8 children.
Bonnie worked her entire career in the banking industry. She enjoyed gardening and interior decorating as well as all beautiful things. She was a loyal and giving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend.
Surviving family members include her loving husband Robert E. McCort; brothers, Bruce and Gordon Spencer; sister, Barbara Spencer; daughter, Bonnie Pope (Fred); sons, Spencer Helm (Carolyn) and Jim Helm (Kim); loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many loving relatives.
Bonyiar was preceded by her brothers Doc and Harry; sister, Iris and Reggie.
Graveside services will be held at Old Marlboro Cemetery in Sophia, North Carolina, on October 12, 2013 at 2 p.m.

Clarence Arthur (Acey) Thomas
HIGH POINT — Mr. Clarence Arthur (Acey) Thomas, 79, resident of High Point, passed October 7, 2013, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Mr. Thomas was born December 31, 1933, in Mt. Airy, NC. A resident of this area most of his life, he retired from Piedmont Ford Truck Sales with more than 30 years of service and was a lifetime member of Fairfield United Methodist Church. He loved his church dearly and served on many committees throughout the years. He also was a Sunday school teacher for the Adult II Sunday School Class and was active with the Fairfield Men’s Club. In 1951 he graduated from Allen Jay High School and loved attending his class reunions. In earlier years, he and his wife loved traveling to places like London, Hawaii and the Bahamas. Later in life they continued their travels with the Golden Adventures Group from the church. Acey was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served with the Seabees. He loved telling stories and jokes to his friends, family and grandkids, playing golf and watching his favorite Carolina Tarheels basketball team. In 1953 he married the former Faye Lassiter, who survives of the residence. Just four days ago they enjoyed a 60th anniversary party with their family and friends. The love relationship between them was carried over into the home they built on principles of care and love. He loved watching his six grandkids playing sports through the years and was their most avid fan, always there encouraging and cheering them on.
Also surviving are his son, Craig Thomas and wife Terri of High Point; two daughters, Tammy Fox and husband Jimmy of Jamestown and Terri Thomas of High Point; a sister, Vicki Fallenstein and husband Ted of Archdale; six grandchildren, Casie (Thomas) Pegg, Chad Thomas, Nate Fox, Whitney Fox, Taylor Thomas and Zack Fox; and five great-grandchildren, Craig Austin, Tolliver, Jaxon, Ella and Finely. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Thomas; his brother, Ray Thomas; his sister, Shirley Peatross; his mother, Mary Louise Gardner Barnes; and his step-father, Carl Barnes, by whom he was raised.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Fairfield United Methodist Church with Rev. Jill Auman, Rev. Barry Lemons and Rev. Donald Thomas Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Cumby Family Funeral Service, 1015 Eastchester Dr. High Point, NC 27262.
