Joan Garner
DENTON — Joan Spoon Garner, age 79, of Denton died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at High Point Regional Cancer Center.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Central United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Sharon Lee.
Ms. Garner was born Jan. 20, 1934, to Ernest Spoon and Elgie Suggs Spoon. She was a graduate of Jamestown High School, a member of Central United Methodist Church, and retired from Councill Craftsman. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Garner, in 1992 and by a sister, Ernestine Murrow.
Survivors include daughters, DeLisa Garner and Tammy G. Johnson, both of Denton, son Lowe Garner and wife Kathy of Denton.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton and other times at the home of Tammy Johnson on Newsom Avenue in Denton.

Irene Key
HIGH POINT — Mrs. Frances Irene Hayden Key, 88, formerly of Jamestown, died Aug. 7, 2013, at Hospice Home at High Point.
Mrs. Key was born July 31, 1925, in Patrick County, Va., a daughter to the late James Thomas and Annie White Hayden. A resident of North Carolina most of her life, she had worked at Alma Desk and Melrose Hosiery. Most recently, she had worked at the Dogwood Soda Shop at High Point Regional Hospital and volunteered there as well. She also was a member of Hickory Chapel Wesleyan Church. Irene loved cooking and was famous for all her meals amongst her family. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Burlie Wyatt Key, in 1990 and her daughter, Linda Gail Jones, in 2012.
Surviving are her son, Terry Key and wife Nikki of Julian; her brother, Bill Hayden and wife Betty of Mt. Airy; her son-in-law, Wes Jones of Kernersville; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of the Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point with the Rev. James Capps officiating.  Interment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Don F. Royals
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Don F. Royals, 77, passed Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.
Don is survived by his wife Beatrice Neal Royals; his sister Doris “Dot” Coggin; his sons Mark Royals (Tina) and John Johnson (Jonella); daughters Jill Spivey (Robert), Kaye Litano (Nick) and Lynne Neely (Joe); grandchildren April Barron (David), Erin Boutwell (Kevin), John Holland Johnson, Ryan Neely, Jonathan Litano, Benjamin Litano and Luke Neely.
Don was born March 7, 1936, in High Point, N.C. After serving several years in the United States Marines, he enjoyed a successful career as a Chrysler dealer/owner of Graceland Dodge. Don was recognized consecutively as a Five Star Dealer for Chrysler.  Don was an avid golfer and was privileged to play on many prestigious courses including the British Open courses. Don enjoyed a variety of sports and loved the company of others including sponsoring teams during Memphis in May Bar-B-que affectionately called the “Plastered Porkers.”
Don leaves behind a host of loving family, friends, coworkers and his adoring 11-year-old Dachshund Hans. Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. at Germantown Baptist Church, 9450 Poplar Ave., Germantown, Tenn. Sonja Briley
HIGH POINT — Ms. Sonja Michelle Briley, 43, passed away to be with the Lord on Monday, August 5, 2013, at her residence. She was born August 12, 1969, in Westchester County, NY. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, paternal grandparents, two uncles, two aunts and four special cousins.
Sonja was a sweet, compassionate, loving and giving person; and a very loving mother.
She leaves to cherish her memories, two daughters, Robtrice Sullivan of High Point, NC and Raven Dines of the home; one son, Rodrick Briley of High Point, NC; her parents, Harold and Sara Briley of High Point, NC;  four brothers, Harold Demetrius and Reginald Briley both of High Point, NC; Demarius (Angela) Payne of Thomasville, NC and Benjamin Williams of New York; three sisters, Robin McDonald of Springfield, MA, Michelle Battle of Atlanta, GA  and Tonya White of Greensboro, NC; special friend, Antonio Ray and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel, 1810 Brockett Ave. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 12:30 p.m. until 1 p.m.

Jill (Goins) Herring
TRINITY— Jill (Goins) Herring, 60, passed away Wednesday, August 07, 2013, at High Point Regional Hospital. She was the loving wife of David L. Herring to whom she was married to for 35 years on February 25, 2012.
Mrs. Herring was born on November 4, 1952, in High Point, a daughter of the late Douglas and Maudie Goins. She was a graduate of High Point Central High School.
In her spare time she enjoyed spending being with her family and friends, traveling to the beach and mountains, and tending to her flower garden.
In addition to her husband, Jill is survived by a daughter, April Michelle Grant and her husband, Travis of Trinity; a son, Rusty L. Herring and his wife, Tammy of Archdale; five grandchildren, Tess and Brook Herring both of Trinity, Katie Ann Herring of Archdale, and Bri and Sebastan Grant both of Trinity; a brother, Todd Goins of Myrtle Beach; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by a sister Vickie Loflin.
A celebration of life memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, August 10, 2013, at Cumby Family Funeral Service, 206 Trindale Road, Archdale with Rev. Ken Evans officiating. A visitation will follow at the funeral home.

Walter K. Otto
HIGH POINT — Walter K. Otto of High Point, North Carolina went to be with the Lord Tuesday, August 6, 2013. Walter was born in Saginaw, Michigan on March 10, 1920.
Walter attended Western Technical Commercial School in Toronto, Canada which had an art department. After graduating, Walter’s father sent him to Stratford, Ontario to work in a furniture factory to get experience. While working at Stratford Chair Company he worked for a man who soon became his father-in-law. Walter married Vera Mae Knack on January 22, 1944.
World War II broke out and Walter and his wife, Vera, returned to Birmingham, Michigan. There Walter entered the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific as a radio technician. After the war ended he and his family returned home to Michigan and Walter, following in his father’s footsteps in furniture design, attended Klok Institute in Grand Rapids. Walter then accepted a design position with Owosso Furniture in Benton, Arkansas and later at the head office of Korhler Manufacturing Company in Naperville, Illinois and Kankakee, Illinois.
In 1971, Walter and Dudley Moore began Otto & Moore, Inc. Walter and his business partner trained many furniture designers, all of whom have gone out on their own and have been very successful.
Walter had a passion for the Lord, his family, and friends. He was an elder at The Church at High Point for over 40 years and loved attending worship. Walter was a true blessing to many people. He also served on the Board of Youth for Christ for two years. He enjoyed skiing, golfing, running, Nautilus, and fixing things.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife Vera, whom he was married to for 68 years. He is survived by 2 children, Wayne Otto of Boone, NC and Betsy Otto of High Point, NC.
His family and friends will miss him so very much. He has his heavenly body now and has been reunited with loved ones! “Rejoice in the Lord Always.”
A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 11, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Sechrest Funeral Home Chapel, 1301 East Lexington Avenue, High Point, NC. Visitation with the family will be held in the Sechrest Room immediately following the memorial service.

WINSTON-SALEM — Mary Jane Smith, 72, of Shady Grove Church Road, died early Thursday, August 8, 2013. Funeral services will be on Saturday, August 10 at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home in Wallburg. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Douglas Varner
SAGINAW, TEXAS — Douglas Haley “Doug” Varner, 71, of Saginaw, Texas, died Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at North Hills Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 25 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 2354 Finch Farm Road, Trinity, NC 27370.
The family will receive friends at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Mt. Olivet Funeral Home in Fort Worth, Texas, and Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale, NC, are serving the family.

Brenda Payne
WALBURG — Brenda Cecil Payne, 68, of Wallburg, died Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at Hospice Home of High Point after a very brief illness. She was born in Guilford County on December 23, 1944, to the late Flay Rudolph Cecil and Ethel Durham Cecil. She worked for over 30 years at Forsyth County Department of Social Services. She is survived by two daughters, Ginger Payne Martin and Crystal Payne, both of Wallburg; and a son, Bruce Payne and wife Laura of High Point; and five grandchildren. The family wants to thank Marilyn Thornton who was like a sister to Brenda. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday at Christ United Methodist Church in High Point. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice Care of High Point.
