Jimmy Lee Bates, Sr.
THOMASVILLE — Mr. Jimmy (Jim) Lee Bates, Sr., age 77, a resident of Thomasville, passed away Tuesday morning, July 30, 2013. He was born in Lexington, N.C., on January 19, 1936, to Murphy and Ethel Bates.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy H. Bates; daughters, Theresa Bullin and husband Bobby, Deborah Debenham and husband Rick; a son, Jimmy Lee Bates, Jr. and wife Angel; sisters, Pattie Everhart and Barbara Padgett; brothers, Murphy Bates, Sr. and wife Doris and Ray Edward Bates and wife Denise; grandchildren, Lynn Peterson, Kelly Owens and husband C.J., Adam Warwick, Bree Miller and husband Alex and Will Bates; and a great-granddaughter, Rhiley Warwick. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter Somer Bree Warwick.
He was employed by Modern Carving Company for 25 years and was owner of Bates Enterprise. After retirement he enjoyed wood carving, camping, fishing and especially watching his grandchildren and great-granddaughter. He was such a loving father and exceptional grandfather who lived his life to the fullest.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 2, 2013, at 2 p.m. in J.C. Green & Sons Chapel with Rev. Hank Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Cooperative Community Ministry, P.O. Box 1841, Thomasville, N.C. 27361.

Mildred Irene Elder Spencer
TRINITY — Mildred Irene Elder Spencer of Trinity, NC, passed away July 31, 2013, at Hospice Home of High Point. Mildred was born March 15, 1920, in Randolph County, NC, to the late Will and Samira Gray Elder. A resident of this area all her life, she was a lifelong member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church where she was active in United Methodist Women, co-founder of the Senior Citizens Group (now known as Charlie’s Angels), a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and held many other positions.
On June 10, 1939, she married E. Cone Spencer who preceded her in death on November 24, 1987. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Norman Elder, sister, Thelma Coltrane, and son-in-law, Kenneth Hendrix.
Surviving are her daughters, Nancy Hamilton and husband Richard, of Trinity, and Phyllis Hendrix, of Sophia; grandchildren Lee and Donna Hendrix, Angela and Ray Bennett, Joann and Steve Rion, Lesley and Chip Theriault, Ricky Hamilton and Matt Talley; and great-grandchildren Kacey Bennett, Laura Rion, Cameron Hendrix, Brandon Bennett, Zachary Rion, Jacob Rion, Hailey Hendrix, and Caleb Theriault; sister-in-law, Kathleen Spencer; nieces Kay McDowell, Gail Coltrane, Lois Gaddy, Irene Bowman, and Sue Styles and nephew Randy Spencer.
Mrs. Spencer graduated from Trinity High School and Bryce Business College. Mildred retired from Russell and McFadden Insurance and then worked for Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church for 20 years.
“Mammaw” loved everyone and everyone loved her. She held so many dear to her heart.
Funeral services will be held at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, 9429 Archdale Road, Trinity, on Friday, August 2, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Dr. Roger Weisner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale, on Thursday, August 1, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and will be at the home at other times.
