Edwin Howard Dobbins

HIGH POINT — Edwin Howard Dobbins, 90, passed away on January 29 at High Point Regional Hospital. He was born August 27, 1922, in Carbon Hill, Alabama. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during World War II on a support ship at Iwo Jima and was a witness to the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima in 1945. He was an active member of the First Church of God of Archdale. He was employed by The High Point Enterprise for 35 years until he retired. After retirement, he enjoyed part-time employment at Harris Teeter for 10 years.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Payne Dobbins; his daughter Luella Byrd; and sons Gary Dobbins and wife Angela, and Craig Dobbins and wife Carol. Also surviving are his sisters, Helen Younts of High Point, Margaret Calos and husband Stabby of Danville, VA; and his brother JD Dobbins and wife Peggy of High Point. He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Amy Kennedy for her home-care assistance and care shown to their family throughout this time.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at First Church of God of Archdale, 7009 Weant Road, at 1:00 p.m.

 

Vivian Easter

DENTON – Mrs. Vivian Wright Easter, 85, of Denton died Tuesday, January 29, 2013. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Denton Wesleyan Church. Timothy Joseph Gundy

LAS VEGAS — Timothy Joseph Gundy died suddenly at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada, on January 22, 2013. He was born August 24, 1966, in Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Illinois. His family moved to High Point, North Carolina, in 1969. He graduated from High Point Central High School. He was employed by Salomon Tanus at For Her, Inc.

He was predeceased by his parents, Jim and Lorraine Gundy; a sister, Janis Gundy; and brother-in-law, Kirby Farrington.

He is survived by brothers, Michael Gundy and wife Julie from Katy, Texas, Patrick Gundy from Bend Oregon; two sisters, Teri Smith and husband Ed, and Molly Farrington, both of Greensboro. He also had many nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.

Tim loved all sports, especially baseball. He played, coached and was a fan for many years. He especially loved the Chicago Cubs and never gave up hope that he would see them in the World Series. He had a huge heart and a unique sense of humor. He will be missed by friends and family alike.

The family invites you to a service to remember and celebrate Tim’s life on Saturday, February 2 at 2:00 p.m. at W. Market Street UMC located at 302 W. Market St., Greensboro, NC. His family will greet friends after the service in the Gathering Space of the church.

Billie Jeanne Taylor Hames

TRINITY — Mrs. Billie Jeanne Taylor Hames, 82, a resident of Trinity, died January 27, 2013, at her home. Mrs. Hames was born December 30, 1930, in Burlington, NC, a daughter of the late Bud and Lillian Tillman Taylor. A resident of this area for 35 years, she was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church in Thomasville. She also attended N.C. School of the Deaf in Morganton. In 1952 she married Theodore William Hames, who preceded her in death in 2004. Also preceding her are two sisters, Pete Abke and Polly Copelan.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathy Causey and husband Larry of Trinity and Robbin Jordan and husband Tony of Thomasville; three grandchildren, Lisa Penley and husband Rex, Brian Hogan and Lori Rush; four great-grandchildren, Hunter Penley, Madison Hogan, McKenzie Hogan and Katelyn Hogan; a sister-in-law, Gladys Hames; a brother-in-law, Charlie Copelan; and a special friend, her dog Zosha.

Funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of the Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale. Entombment will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Hunter Penley, Rex Penley, Brian Hogan, Wayne Hames, Chuck Moser, Alan Traynham and Joey Traynham. Gene Jarrett

LEXINGTON — Gene Tuney Jarrett, 82, of East U.S. Highway 64, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Wake Forest Baptist Health – Lexington Medical Center.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 31, 2013, at Mt. Tabor United Church of Christ. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home.

 

Frank Morton

LEXINGTON — Franklin “Frank” Monroe Morton, 71, went home to be with his Lord and Saviour Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 2, 2013, at North Lexington Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home.

 

Candy Shonna Perry

THOMASVILLE — Candy Shonna Perry, 37, passed away Sunday, January 27, 2013, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Candy was born July 4, 1975, in Davidson County to Ronnie Brooks and Shelia Nobles Varner.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Paul Perry Jr.; sons, Cody Rabon and Avery Rabon; daughter, Allie Perry; parents;  brother, Michael Brooks and his fiancée, Crystal Hess; and special niece, Kylee Brooks.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2013, at Thomasville Funeral Home. A Chapel Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 1, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Randy Parris and Rev. Mary Parris officiating. Interment will follow at Hill Memorial Park.

Merle Mae Briggs Yow

SUFFOLK, VA — Merle Mae Briggs Yow, 91, passed away Saturday Jan. 26, 2013, at Maryview Convalescence Center in Suffolk, VA.

Born in High Point, NC, on June 3, 1921, she was the daughter of Henry Franklin and Essie Hodgin Briggs. She was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Carl Jay Yow. As the wife of a minister, she lived in many places in North Carolina and Virginia, settling in Belvidere, NC, in retirement.

Survivors include three sons, Robert and wife Sue of Chinquapin, NC, Carl Jay Jr. and wife Darlene of Oak Ridge, NC, and John and wife Connie of Carrollton, VA; and two daughters and their husbands, Rebecca and Rev. Ralph Crabill of Linden, VA, and Lena & William Grant; a sister, Mary Alice Moran of Greensboro NC; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service and interment will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at Deep River Friends Meeting, High Point, NC, with the Rev. Ralph Crabill officiating. Baker-Foster Funeral Home, Bennett’s Creek Chapel is handling arrangements.
