David Alan Collins
HIGH POINT – David Alan Collins, Age sixty two, peacefully passed away in his home on Tuesday, November 13, 2012.
David was born September 29, 1950 to proud parents David Leroy and Phyllis Proffitt Collins.
After graduating from Glade Valley School in 1968 he was accepted into Mars Hill College where he earned a BA in music with an emphasis on Conducting. He was an active member of Phi MU Alpha fraternity. He met his wife, Donna Hardes Collins while attending Mars Hill College. As a college student he launched his career as minister of music at the First Baptist Church of Franklin NC. After graduating he was accepted into the Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans LA. While in seminary he served as minister of music at Airline Baptist Church in Metairie LA and created the Classical Touring Choir. In the summer of 1973, David’s choir traveled the southeast performing, including a performance at Lifeway Ridgecrest Conference Center. His Touring Choir’s final performance was at Green Street Baptist Church in High Point, NC. David’s gifts for church music and his ability to capture his choral group’s gifts played an instrumental role in helping others launch their own music ministries.
David continued an inspiring career in church music and served as minister of music at Rankin Baptist Church in Greensboro and Emerywood Baptist Church in High Point. He went on to share his gift of music, becoming involved with community theater. He was the musical director for the musical Pippin at High Point Theatre. After many plays with him behind the scenes as musical director he stepped onto the stage as an actor in House of Blue Leaves, playing Artie Shaugnessy, a triumphant success. David touched many lives with his gift of music.
After a successful career in community theatre he returned to his career as the music minister of First Baptist Church in Phoenix AZ.
David met his wife, Donna Hardes Collins while they were both students at Mars Hill College. They were married on May 31, 1970 at The First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, NC, Their first child Heather Leigh Collins was born on September 1, 1971 in Asheville, NC. Their second child, Courtney Elizabeth Collins was born on March 15, 1977. David finished his masters at Eastern Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. He began working for his father, Leroy Collins at Southern Mill Supply Company in High Point shortly after his second child was born.
Preceding him in death is his mother, Phyllis Collins, his granddaughter Hillary Paige Godfrey.and brother in law Doug Pinnell.
Surviving family includes his father, David Leroy Collins, sister Catherine Pinnell,Donna Hardes Collins, Daughter Heather Collins, daughter Courtney Collins Hunter, son in law Stuart Hunter. Grandchildren include Mary Jordan Collins, daughter of Heather Collins, Emma Grace Collins, Avery Collins and Maxwell and Henry Hunter, children of Courtney and Stuart Hunter. Nephew and niece are Collins Stemler and Mollie Catherine Stemler, children of Catherine Pinnell.
David was a devoted son, Father, and grandfather. His deep love for his family made a lasting impact and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
The visitation will be held on Saturday evening from six until eight o’clock at Sechrest Funeral Home, 1301 E. Lexington Ave. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 18th at 1:00pm, with Dr. Richard Groves officiating. Following the service will be a graveside service at Floral Garden Cemetery.

James “Blue” Davis
ASHEBORO – Mr. James Lin “Blue” Davis, 70, of Asheboro, NC, died Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at his residence.
A funeral service is scheduled for 1:00 pm Saturday, November 17, 2012, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Michelle Bowden officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Asheboro.
A native of Guilford County, NC, Mr. Davis was born March 26, 1942. He was the son of the late Willie Davis and Minnie Clifton Davis. Mr. Davis attended Connected Bridges Outreach Ministries. In addition to his parents, Mr. Davis was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Davis is survived by daughter, Barbara Ann Davis and husband, Jimmy, of High Point, NC, brother, Eddie B. Davis, of Greensboro, NC, grandchildren, Faith Davis Shields, Jaivon Garlins, Shaniya Davis; special friend and caregiver, Catherine Smith, of Asheboro; special nephews, Paul A. Thomas, of Bennettsville, SC, Johnny “ Johnny Cake” Davis, of High Point, NC; and a host of other family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Saturday, November 17, 2012, at Ridge Funeral Home.

William (Bill) Edgar Dryden, Jr.

ARCHDALE – Mary Jane (Grant) Gonteski, 36, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at High Point Regional Hospital.
A celebration of life service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 18, 2012 at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, 206 Trindale Road, Archdale. Burial will follow in Landmark Baptist Church Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
RALEIGH – Mrs. Cynthia Denise Kirby Harris, 51, departed this life on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at her residence. She was born on May 14, 1961 in High Point NC. She was the granddaughter of late Effie Tyson. She was married to Winfred Harris for 34 years. Cynthia graduated from High Point Central High School. She was a Catering Director for North Carolina State University. Before moving to Raleigh, NC, she was a former employee of The Radisson Hotel.
She was a former member of St. Paul United Church God on Pearson Place. She adored her children and grandchildren, and also loved to design and decorate flowers for weddings and for family members.
Surviving to cherish her memories are her husband, Winfred “Ray” Harris of the home; two sons, Raymond (Rachel) Harris, Bobby (Ashlee, fiancée) Harris both of Raleigh NC; two grandchildren, Israel and Katelyn Harris both of Raleigh, NC; one brother, Bobby Tyson of Raleigh, NC; three half-brothers; one half-sister; her father; mother-in–law, Betty Horton of High Point, NC; one aunt, Leola Williams of Washington, DC; two uncles, William Tyson and Robert Tyson both of High Point, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel, 1810 Brockett Avenue, High Point, NC. Interment will follow in Carolina Biblical Gardens, Jamestown, NC. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 12:30 p.m. until 1:00 p.m.

LEXINGTON – Lonnie Joe Kesler, 60, of Boones Cave Road, died Thursday, November 15, 2012, at Hinkle Hospice House .

Lowell Esker Hembree Madden
HIGH POINT – Mrs. Madden passed from this world on November 14, 2012. She was born Lowell Esker Hembree in Hart County, Georgia on May 19, 1915. On October 19, 1930 she married Curtis Teasley Madden and they were married for 61 years upon his passing in 1992. Mr. and Mrs. Madden moved to High Point, NC with their two children in 1941. She was a member of Springfield Baptist Church where she was active in her Sunday School class and for many years was a member of the choir. Mrs. Madden retired from Crowne Hosiery Mill in High Point.
“Granny” Madden had a servant’s heart and spent her life doing for her kids and grandchildren. She cooked, sewed, raised many gardens and put up enough food for her family, friends and neighbors. She was a diligent caretaker of her husband during the last few years of his life. She loved her Lord, her family, her church and her friends with all of her heart. She will be missed greatly.
Mrs. Madden was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Parker Hembree; three sisters, Belle Ethridge, Mary Lou Kay, and Louise Ankerich; and one granddaughter, Toni Madden Hill.
Surviving Mrs. Madden are her two children, son, Curtis Teasley Madden, Jr. and wife Betty Tucker Madden, and daughter, Shirley Madden Bishop and husband Gary. She also has one surviving brother, Joseph Hembree, Jr and one sister, Hazel McLain. She is also survived by four grandchildren; Debbie Madden, Sherry Bishop Hylton and husband Tommy, Terry Bishop and wife Wendy, and Curtis Teasley Madden, III and wife Chris. There are ten great-grandchildren; Aimee Hill Wansley and husband Bo, Sam Hylton and wife, Candace, Nick Hylton and wife Lindsay, Curtis Teasley Madden, IV and wife Danielle, Ryan Madden and wife Donna, Allie Hylton, Jacob Bishop, Emily Bishop, Mollie Bishop and Chance Madden. Mrs. Madden also had five great-great grandchildren, Avery, Addyson and Alaster Wansley, Eli Hylton, and Peyton Hylton, and Madlynn Madden.
Funeral services for Mrs. Madden will be held 11:00 am Saturday in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale with the Reverend Bobby Loving officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Memorial Park. The family will greet friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Vera Elizabeth Mayland
GREENSBORO – Vera Elizabeth Mayland, 91, of Greensboro, died Wednesday at High Point Regional Hospital. She was born August 2, 1921 in Racine, Wisconsin. Mrs. Mayland was known for her sewing and crafts and she loved to cook, bake and quilt. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas LeRoy Mayland in 1999.
Mrs. Mayland is survived by one son William “Bill” Mayland and his wife Darlene of Greensboro, two grandchildren, Jeffrey Lee Mayland and Lisa Mayland Hardister and two great grandchildren, Landon Cole Hardister and Brooke Avery Hardister.

Arnold Clingman Osteen
HIGH POINT — Arnold Clingman Osteen died October 27, 2012 in California. Born October 12, 1917 he is a son of the late Glover Osteen and Isabelle Ward Osteen. Mr. Osteen is a World War II veteran having served in the US Navy on a destroyer in the Pacific and in the Aleutian Islands. He retired from Silver Knit Hosiery and was a member of the First Baptist Church of High Point.
Mr. Osteen is survived by one son Kenneth Arnold Osteen and his wife Sally and a granddaughter Briana Osteen all of Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by a brother John Osteen of Archdale.
Funeral services for Mr. Osteen with be held 2:00 pm Sunday at the First Baptist Church of High Point with the Reverend Bruce Hartgrove officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Memorial Park. The family will greet friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

THOMASVILLE — Mr. William Cameron (Bill) Roberts, 81, a resident of Thomasville, NC passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2012.
Bill was born March 21, 1931 in Patrick County, Virginia a son of the late Bert Everett Roberts and Nannie Lou Bennett Roberts and had made this area his home most of his life. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, James Roberts and Ken Roberts and his sister, Dene Roberts Miller. He was retired from Burlington Industries, was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean Conflict and was of the Baptist faith. Bill enjoyed buying, selling, and trading antiques and along with his loving wife Joyce, they both loved to play Bingo. On December 22, 1951 he married Joyce E. Creed who died on October 19, 2010.
Surviving are his daughter, Cheryl Waisner and husband Frank of Thomasville, NC; his sons, Jeff Roberts and wife Nancy of Burlington, NC, Joe Roberts and wife Darlene of Thomasville, NC, and Pete Roberts and wife Wanda of Enterprise, AL. Also surviving are six grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and eleven step-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 17, 2012 in the J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville with Pastor Michael L. Orman officiating. Burial will follow in the Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm Friday at the funeral home.
