DENTON — Miss Jane Elizabeth Cranford, 65, of Denton, died early Wednesday, September 18, at Mountain Vista Health Park. A graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 20, at Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Denton. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday prior to the service at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton.
Frances Mitchell Houser
ARCHDALE — Frances Mitchell Houser, 90, resident of Archdale, died Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at her residence.
She was born January 4, 1923, in High Point, NC, a daughter of the late Earnest and Nora Mitchell. She had lived in High Point and vicinity all of her life and was a housewife. She was a member of Trinity Heights Wesleyan Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two siblings, Consula Kearns and Mack Mitchell. Mrs. Houser was a wonderful wife and mother.
She was married in June 1940 to William Virgil Houser and they enjoyed 73 wonderful years together.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two children, Jerry Houser and wife, Eileen and Linda Kennedy and husband, J.B.; one grandchild, Kathy; two great-grandsons, Craig and Chris Nichols; one brother, Walter Mitchell and his wife, Blanchette; one brother-in-law, Richard Hauser and wife, Helen; nieces and nephews, Larry Kearns, Sandy East, Ray Mitchell, Reid Mitchell, Roderick Mitchell, James Hauser, Steve Hauser and Catherine Perdue and all their families.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 20, 2013, at Trinity Heights Wesleyan Church, officiated by Reverend Crawford Crenshaw. Interment will follow at Floral Garden Park Cemetery. A visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale.

LEXINGTON — Catherine Starling Long Ladd, 75, died Wednesday, September 18, 2013. A graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 21, at Reedy Creek Church of Christ Cemetery.
Michael Thomas Lauer
HIGH POINT — Michael Thomas “Doc” Lauer, 51, of Flower Mound, Texas, passed away Monday, September 16, 2013, at High Point Regional Hospital. He was the loving husband of Melinda Anne (Myers) Lauer to whom he was married for 22 years.
Mr. Lauer was born on May 5, 1962, in Raleigh, a son of Gertrude (Klein) Lauer and Tommie Lauer, both of High Point. He was a 1980 graduate of Ragsdale High School and a 1984 graduate of the University of North Carolina Greensboro, where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology and was a founding father of the UNCG chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He furthered his education at Georgia Institute of Technology where he received a master’s degree in Environmental Nuclear Engineering.
He was an active member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Coppell, Texas.
Mr. Lauer enjoyed photography, camping, woodworking and being a “gourmet chef” for his friends and family. Most of all he enjoyed traveling with his family, watching and attending baseball games and playing golf with his sons.
He was extremely witty and was always ready to put others at ease with his sense of humor.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Lauer is survived by two sons whom he loved dearly, Thomas Deane Lauer and Matthew Jac Lauer, both of Flower Mound, Texas; a brother, Tom Lauer and his wife, Jill of Greensboro; and several extremely close friends.
A celebration of life memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 19, 2013, at Cumby Family Funeral Service, 1015 Eastchester Drive, High Point, with Fr. Tom Norris O.F.S.F of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church officiating. A visitation will follow at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Michael’s memory to Thomas and Matthew’s Education Fund at Chase Bank, Attn: Marsha Crawford, 2051 Long Prarie Road, Flower Mound, TX, 75022.

HIGH POINT — Albert Willie Lawrence, 72, of High Point died Tuesday at the Hospice Home at High Point. Rev. Rufus Kenneth Newlin
HIGH POINT — Rev. Rufus Kenneth Newlin, 69, of 810 Mark St., High Point, died on Sunday, September 15, 2013, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Rufus was born to Lucile Palmer Newlin and Miles Newlin on February 9, 1944, in Bronx, N.Y., and was raised in High Point, N.C., under the care of his beloved grandparents, Sallie Smalls Palmer and Rufus Costello Palmer. He attended William Penn High School, West Virginia State College and Barnard-Baruch University. He settled in New York City where he began his career in higher education and worked tirelessly to provide underprivileged students with the opportunity to obtain a college education. His professional endeavors included Dean of Students for NYC Technical Community College, president of Morristown College, and director of the High Point Sheltered Workshop. Mr. Newlin lived his life as an activist, beginning with his leadership of the February 11 high school sit-in at the Woolworth counter. With his wife he established First Fruits Teaching Ministry, which serves the aged, infirmed and poor working families of the greater High Point area.
Rev. Newlin was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, granddaughter Camille, cherished cousin Joyce C. Palmer and dear brother-in-law Robert Noel.
Remaining to honor his memory are his wife of 43 years, Harriet Noel Newlin; daughters, Muntaj “Taj” Newlin, Jamyle Kathy Acevedo and Alisha Tatum; six grandchildren and other relatives.
The homegoing celebration will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 21, 2013, at Memorial UMC at 1327 Cedrow Drive. Visitation will be at 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the church. Melvin Griggs Owens, Jr.
HIGH POINT — Melvin Griggs Owens, Jr., 78, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at High Point Regional Hospital. He was the loving husband of Wanda E. (Cheek) Owens to whom he was married for 51 years.
Mr. Owens was born on June 1, 1935, in Hertford, NC, a son of the late Melvin G. Owens, Sr. and Anne (Sherlock) Evans. He was a former 3rd shift plant manager for the Waste Treatment Plant, High Point for 17 years until his retirement.
In his spare time he enjoyed freshwater fishing, gardening, collecting firearms, was a model airplane enthusiast, and racing speedboats when he was younger.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Owens is survived by a daughter, Deborah Hopson and her husband, Gary of Greensboro; two grandsons, Brian Surratt and his wife, Rachael of Burlington, and Darren Surratt of Burlington; two great-grandchildren, Madison Westbrooks of Graham, and Dakota Surratt of Burlington; two sisters, Catherine McKinley and her husband, Bill of Charlotte, and Miriam O’Neal of Charlotte; and many nephews.
A celebration of life service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 20, 2013, in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, 206 Trindale Road, Archdale, with Rev. Bobby Loving officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Garden Memorial Park. A visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
