Herbert Lee Byrd
“This is the day that the Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
HIGH POINT – Herbert Lee Byrd, son of the late Mary Robbins Byrd and James Oliver Byrd, Sr. departed this life Friday, November 9, 2012 at his home.  He was born in High Point, North Carolina on October 21, 1946.  He was married to Betty Ingram Byrd for 43 years.  He graduated from William Penn High School and attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.  He was employed with the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy Sheriff/Detective.  In 2007 he retired after more than 30 years of service.
Surviving are:  wife, Betty Ingram Byrd of the home, children;  Herbert L. Byrd, Jr. (Chrystal), Fitchburg, WI, Cindy D. Green (Daryl), Jamestown, NC;  grandchildren, Saxton Cotton, Daryl Green, Jr., Sterling Byrd, Silver Byrd, Daniel Green and Darius Green; brother, James O. Byrd, Jr. (Mary) and sister, Tracy Y. Johnson (Billy). He leaves to cherish an aunt, Elouise Nesbitt, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. November 13, 2012 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1301 Alamance Church Road, Greensboro, NC.

DENTON – Willa Dean Snider Cagle, 88, of Volunteer Rescue Road died Nov. 11, 2012, at her residence.

LEXINGTON – The Rev. Vernon McCoy Church, 81, of Greensboro Street Ext. died Nov. 10, 2012, at Hinkle Hospice House.
Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial follows in Mt. Carmel Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

LEXINGTON – Landin Chance Cowan, died Nov. 8, 2012, shortly after birth.

LEXINGTON – Jason Edsel Everhart , 77, of Kirkwood Street, died Nov. 11, 2012, at Lexington Health Care of Lexington.

Shirley Farris Kindley
THOMASVILLE – Ms. Shirley Farris Kindley, age 66, a resident of Westwood Health Care, formerly of 11325 E. US Hwy 64, passed away in the health care center. She was born March 18, 1946 in Davidson Co., NC, daughter of the late Charlie Dawes Kindley and Ruby Jewell Yarborough Kindley. Ms. Kindley was formerly employed with Ragan Hosiery Mill and attended Hughes Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Bonnie Deweese and a brother, Terry Lee Kindley.
Surviving are one sister, Saundra Smith and husband Lloyd of Thomasville; three brothers, Ronnie Kindley and Michael Kindley and wife Rebecca, all of Thomasville, and Keith Kindley and wife Carolyn of Denton; several nieces and nephews; a special niece, Cindy Martin of Thomasville and a special nephew, Johnny Deweese of Thomasville.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Nov 14, 2012 at 2:00 PM in J. C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville. The interment will be in Hughes Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 PM and other times at the home of her sister, Saundra Smith, 11325 E. US Hwy 64, Thomasville, NC 27360. Regina Patterson Snead
HICKORY – Mrs. Regina Yvonne Patterson Snead, 68, daughter of the late Reverend J.J. Patterson and the late Ruth Hoover Patterson, departed this life on Wednesday November 7, 2012, at her home in Hickory, NC.
Born on January 19, 1944, Regina was the second of three children born to the Reverend and Mrs. Patterson. Her brother Johnnie and sister Lillie preceded her in death.  She attended public school in Hamlet, NC, and graduated high school from William Penn High School in High Point, NC.  After high school, she graduated from Winston Salem State University with a B.A. in Education, and earned a Master’s degree in Education from Appalachian State University.  Regina was passionate about education and worked   many years as a special needs teacher, retiring as a Consultant for Behavioral Support for the State of North Carolina.
An avid sports fan, she loved all sports, especially football, and could always be found spending her weekends watching games on television.  With her quick wit, mischievous look, and hearty laugh, she easily charmed everyone she met, and maintained very close friendships through the years. She will be especially missed by her dear friends, Arlean Wilkes, Pat Holloway Gabriel, and Wendy Davis, Tracey Bostick and a very special caregiver, Vicki Kane.
She is survived by her nieces: Lisha Ricks of Hickory, NC, Kimberly Holmes of Conover, NC, Darlene Horne (Kinson) of Hickory, NC, her nephews, Thomas Christopher Holmes of Hickory, NC, Bryon Holmes of Charlotte, NC, and one god daughter, Arloishia Israel and family in High Point, NC, Rockingham, NC, and other parts of the country.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church, 1327 Cedrow Dr. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Carolina Biblical Gardens, Jamestown, NC.

LEXINGTON – Landon Stokes, 81, died Nov. 11, 2012.

Dennis L. (Sarge) Walker
HIGH POINT –  Mr. Dennis L. (Sarge) Walker, age 89 passed away November 11th in Moses Cone Palliative Care Center.
Mr. Walker was born in Axis, Alabama on December 8, 1922 to Alvin B. and Margaret Forte Walker.  He was raised in Calvert, Alabama.  He met his future wife, Winifred Ells, at Navy Pier in Chicago where “Wini” was playing a USO concert.  They were married September 23, 1944.   A Master Sgt. in the USMC, he served as an aviation crew chief in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He took part in an Honor Flight to Washington, DC in 2010.
Mr. Walker was associated with White Motor-Volvo Corporation for twenty nine years and moved to this area in September of 1981. He retired from Thomas Built Buses as a product support manager on January 1, 1990.
He was an active member of Guilford College United Methodist Church, where he served on many committees and taught in the Sunday school.  He took part in several relief missions with the church for hurricane victims.
Mr. Walker was a member of the Kiwanis Club and was in charge of the Kiwanis garden for many years which produced thousands of pounds of food donated to the Salvation Army Women’s Shelter during his tenure.  He also served with the Habitat for Humanity, the Society of Automotive Engineers, and Marine Corps League, and was a Scoutmaster, BSA,  He enjoyed gardening, golfing, traveling and never met a stranger.  Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Carolyn, a sister, Edith Cobb, and his beloved wife Winifred Ells, “Wini”.
Surviving are his children: Karen (Darryl) Anderson, Andalusia, IL; Linda (James) Parker  Tallahassee, FL; Gregg  (Sharron) Walker, Gratis, GA; Grant (Samantha) Walker, Ashtabula, OH; Christine (Bryant) Kidd, Apex, NC.  His sisters Carolyn Davidson, Betty Raley, and Mildred Hanson all reside in  Alabama. Mr. Walker has eleven grandchildren: Blake Anderson, Holly and Jacob Parker, Carey and Kirstin Kidd, Tara and Jessi Walker, Andrew, Madison, Clara, and Lily Walker.  Special friends include Polly Scott and Jane Dawson.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, November 16th at 11:00 am in Guilford College United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. Tom Gibson officiating.  The family will receive friends at Sechrest Funeral Service on E. Lexington Avenue on Thursday afternoon from 3:30 pm until 6:00 p.m.
