Douglas Monroe Allen

GOLDSBORO — Douglas Monroe Allen, 50, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Doug was born in Guilford County on August 21, 1962, to Paula Ann Owens Allen and the late Randall Monroe Allen.

A service celebrating Doug’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at Colonial Baptist Church in Trinity, NC.

In addition to his mother, Doug is survived by his wife Helen Lakey Allen; son, Aaron Douglas Allen and wife Sumiah.

Gladys Luther Burnett, Jr.

WINSTON-SALEM — Gladys Luther Burnett, Jr. was born on February 15, 1949, to Gladys L. Burnett, Sr. and Eva Mae Burnett.

Gladys departed this earthly life ever so sweetly on Sunday, August 11, 2013, at his residence in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Services will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at 2:30 p.m. at Hamlet Chapel C.M.E Church, Pittsboro, NC. Burial will take place in the Church Cemetery.

Everette Caughron

RANDLEMAN — Everette Luther Caughron, 90, of Randleman, passed from this life on Monday, August 12, 2013, at Woodland Hill Care & Rehabilitation, Asheboro.

Mr. Caughron is preceded in death by his wife Arlien Adams Caughron.

In his 90 years, he was a friend to many and known as a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and uncle. He was a World War II veteran, a faithful member at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church, a talented master carpenter in which he helped build many homes throughout Randolph County and was also retired from Lowe’s Foods in Randleman.

He is survived by his daughter: Denise of the home; son: David and his wife Annette of Randleman; sister Wanda Long of Keystone Heights, Florida and many special nieces, nephews and extended family.

The family will receive friends Thursday, August 15, 2013, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 600 S. Main Street, Randleman, NC. A celebration of his life will be held Friday, August 16, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church, 119 W. River Drive, Randleman with Rev. Carol Hunter presiding. Internment will follow at Old Union United Methodist Church Cemetery, Sophia, with military honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

Gloria Ann Wood Gilbert

ARCHDALE — Gloria Ann Wood Gilbert, 64, a native of Elkton and a resident of Archdale, NC, passed away unexpectedly on Aug 13, 2013, at her home in NC.

Gloria Ann was born on Aug 22, 1948, in Elkton and was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Mabel “Mazie” (Morris) Wood.

She was a graduate of Elkton High School and JMU. She was employed at Krispy Kreme as a Senior Accountant in NC.

She will be remembered with great love and affection by her family and friends for her faith, love, kindness and immense generosity. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time with family. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her granddaughter was her pride and joy and brought her much happiness.

She is survived by her loving husband, Norman “Ted” Gilbert of NC; one daughter, Sarah and husband Winston and 7-week-old granddaughter, Olivia Grace Penley of Apex, NC.

She was survived by one brother, Larry Wood and wife, Tina of Stanley, along with numerous extended family and friends.

She was a wonderful mother and friend who will be greatly missed and thought of often.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 6 – 8 p.m. at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Memorial service will be Sunday, Aug 18, at Evangelical United Methodist Church on Spotswood Trail in Elkton at 2 p.m. and will be officiated by Rev. Robert W. Smith, Jr. The commitment will follow at Elk Run Cemetery.

WINSTON-SALEM — Ernest Charles “Bo” Hamilton was born on July 5, 1955, to the late Richard and Edna Mae Hamilton in Tampa, Florida.

Ernest departed this earthly life ever so sweetly on Sunday, August 11, 2013, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C.

Services will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, Salisbury, N.C., with a family visitation beginning promptly at 2:30 p.m. A visitation will be held Saturday, August 17, 2013, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place on Monday, August 19, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. from Salisbury National Cemetery.

Ernest is survived by his loving wife, Henrietta Thomas Hamilton; one daughter, Tamala Hamilton; one son, Terry Henderson; five grandchildren, two sisters, one brother and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

WINSTON-SALEM — John Wiley Harris, 73, of Farmbrooke Lane, died Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at Forsyth Medical Center. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 17, 2013, at Lexington City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 16, 2013, at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home.

 

Mary Louise Embry Herman

THOMASVILLE — Mary Louise Embry Herman, 84, of Thomasville slipped peacefully into eternal life Aug. 10, 2013, surrounded by family and loved ones. Our beloved angel finally has her wings.

Mary was born Oct. 9, 1928, in Davidson County to Elmer Crawford and Virginia Lousie Tobin Embry, who both preceded her in death. She was also preceded by husbands Thomas John Jolly Sr. and Hughes Leonard Herman; a beloved sister, Annie Ruth Grubb; a grandson, Thomas Kelly Fillingame; and one great-grandson, Ryan Chase Clodfelter.

Left to cherish Mary’s memories are a sister, Nancy (Bud) Perdue; and a brother Wayne Embry. Also surviving are six children, Larry Eugene Jolly (Melinda) of Panama City, FL, Brenda Carol Hicks and Thomas John Jolly Jr. (Diane) both of Lexington, NC, Wanda Sharon Fillingame (Florentino) of Ravenel, SC, Patrick Stephen Herman (Sheila) of Thomasville, NC, and Jeffrey Scott Herman (Deana) of Buies Creek, NC; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and cousins, nieces and nephews and too many friends to count.

She was a faithful and devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, High Point Ward. She was a Sunday School and children’s primary teacher and dililgently performed work at various temples. She had many various positions within the church over the years.

The family wishes to thank the WFUBMC Neurosurgery Department and all the support staff for their diligent efforts and excellent care of our loved one. We also thank Triad Cremation Society for their assistance in fulfilling Mary’s final wishes.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held Saturday August 17, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1830 Chestnut St. High Point. Bishop David Hall will officiate with Stake President Scott Fischer presiding. Interment will be in Panama City, FL, at a later date.

The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials be made in Mary’s name to the American Cancer Society or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints High Point Ward Humanitarian Effort fund.

Minister Michael Johnson

THOMASVILLE — Minister Michael Johnson was born on March 25, 1979, to the union of Willie Mac Manning and Rose Johnson Manning.

Michael departed this earthly life ever so sweetly to go from his labor to reward on Friday, August 9, 2013, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C.

Services will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at First Missionary Baptist Churc with a family visitation beginning promptly at 1:30 p.m. A visitation will be held Friday, August 16, 2013, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m at the funeral home with a family hour from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery.

Michael leaves to cherish his memories: one son, Jadarious Nahiem Johnson, his loving parents, Willie and Rose Manning, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Arlene Carlstrom Ogren

THOMASVILLE ­— Mrs. Arlene Carlstrom Ogren, 96, a resident of Piedmont Crossing, passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at the nursing center. Arlene was born and raised in Lockport, Illinois and lived in the Chicago area until 1972 when she relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with her husband Carl upon his retirement. At the age of 81, as a widow she moved to Piedmont Crossing Retirement Center to be near her sons, David and Douglas and several grandchildren. She resided there for the past 15 years until her passing.

Arlene was a devoted mother and wife and a beloved grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her son; David of High Point (formerly of Thomasville), Douglas of Belews Creek and Thomas of Pennington, New Jersey. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Kerrie Brannock, Krissie Furr, Kim King, Kelly Scruggs, Leah Ogren, Jessica Wong, Amanda Morgan and Colin Ogren, as well as nine great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service and inurnment will be held at a later date in Lockport, Illinois.

The family requests that any memorial contributions be made in honor of her grandson, Jason Brannock, to the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund, 1801 Williamette Street, Suite 200, Eugene, OR 97401.

Ruth Lorraine (Wilson) Reaves

RANDLEMAN — Ruth Lorraine (Wilson) Reaves, age 84, died Thursday, August 15, 2013, at her residence.

She was born in High Point, NC, to William Weber Wilson and Beulah Shoemaker Wilson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Kenneth Henry Reaves, her parents, brother William Franklin Wilson and sister Vera Ann Holder.

She is survived by two sons, Rev. Kenneth L. Reaves and wife Lafayetta, Mark Allen Reaves and wife Phyllis, both of Randleman. One daughter, Sherri L. Gingrich and husband Curt of Archdale. Eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Sisters, Juanita Jones (Cecil), Betty Jean Yates, Brothers James Arnold Wilson (Betty), and Darrell Wilson (LaVern).

She was a homemaker, previously employed at Oakdale Cotton Mill.

A Graveside Service will be offered 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 17, 2013, from the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, 206 Trindale Road, Archdale, NC, 27263.

Angela Dawn Shepherd Shackelford

HIGH POINT — Mrs. Angela Dawn Shepherd Shackelford, 41, of High Point died Tuesday, August 13, 2013 in Mt. Airy, N.C.

She was born Aug. 14, 1971, in High Point; a daughter of Buster Shepherd and the former Barbara Ward. She was employed with Davidson County and was of the Baptist faith. Angela was a lover of all kinds of animals, her smile lit up a room, was very caring and tried to make everyone happy especially her family. On July 1, 1994, she married Steven Shackelford who survives of the home.

Also surviving are father Buster Shepherd and wife Peggy of Jamestown, her mother and father-in-law Delores and James Wirshing of High Point, paternal grandmother Della Frazier of Archdale and Lola Ward of Hillsville, Va., her brother David Shepherd and wife Jeanette of Thomasville, two nieces, Lauren Shepherd and Elizabeth Shackelford, her dog Smoke and her two cats Dale and Gizmo.

A celebration of Angela’s life will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, in Oakhill Friends Meeting with John Sides officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 12 noon Saturday at the church.
