WINSTON-SALEM — Janet Sharp Altman, 79, of Reid Road died Monday, Nov. 11, 2013, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Samaritan Baptist Church. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, 10301 N. N.C. 109.
ASHEBORO — Joseph William Belle, 66, of 1057 Cable Creek Road, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013 at Moses Cone Hospital.
Funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Assembly of God, 909 Meadowbrook Road. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church. Gailes Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.,
Vergie Farlow Coltrane
SOPHIA — Mrs. Vergie Farlow Coltrane, 92, resident of Sophia, died Nov. 10, 2013, at her home.
Mrs. Coltrane was born June 26, 1921, a daughter to the late Lawrence and Blanch Hill Farlow. A resident of this area all her life, she was a homemaker and a member of Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting. In 1939 she married Charles Coltrane, who preceded her in death in 1996. Also preceding her were her brother, Raeford Farlow; and two sisters, Pauline Allred and Clata Hardin.
Surviving are two daughters, Louise Hill and husband Jimmy of Sophia and Emogene Bame of Sophia; two sisters, Wilma Cook and Earline Taylor; three grandchildren, Kathy Small, Sherry Hutto and husband Eddie and Donna Sanders and husband Mark; three great-grandchildren, Christian Hutto, Avery Benge and Robert Small; three step-great-grandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of the Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale with Pastor Dave Mercadante officiating. Interment will follow at Marlboro Friends Meeting Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. LaVerne Jarrett Hill
THOMASVILLE — Mrs. LaVerne Jarrett Hill, a resident of Harvest Drive, passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, in Moses H. Cone Hospital. She was born in Davidson County, the daughter of Howard Jones Jarrett and Stella Eddinger Jarrett. She did custodial work at Bethel United Methodist Church and Grace Lutheran Church for more than 30 years. She attended Bethel United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Paige Edward Jarrett and a brother-in-law Carl Rider. She was married to Mr. J. C. Hill, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are three sons, Jerry Arnold Hill of Thomasville, Jason Glenn Hill and wife Alease of Lexington, and Jon Wesley Hill and wife Tia of Lexington; two sisters, Barbara Rider of Lexington, and Hazel Alcon and husband W. A. of Thomasville; two brothers, Austin Jarrett and wife Loretta of Thomasville, and Jim Jarrett and wife Cathy of Lexington; six grandchildren, Zac Hill of Raleigh, Rachael Hill of Wilmington, Zane Hill of Lexington, Ian Hill of Lexington, Laci Hill of Lexington, and Landon Hill of Lexington; a very special friend, Sue Crouch of Lexington; sister-in-law, Louise Jarrett of Thomasville and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at 2 p.m. at J. C. Green and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Tim Starbuck and the Rev. Ben Shepherd officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the respective homes of the family. Berta Freeman Jenkins
TRINITY — Mrs. Berta Freeman Jenkins, 75, a resident of Wilderness Trail, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2013, at her home. She was born on March 14, 1938, in Bennettsville, S.C., to Willie Boyd Freeman and Bertha Jane Haley Freeman. She was a member of Smyrna Grove Community Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Bishop Eugene Lassiter Jenkins on Nov. 29, 2001; granddaughter, Emily Lauren Jenkins; brothers, James, Fred, Boyd, and Franklin “Bobby” Freeman; and sisters, Betty Jackson and Ruth Robinson.
Surviving are her children, David Jenkins and wife Annette of Trinity, Pam Graham and husband Danny of Denton, Jeanene Fitzgerald and husband Joe of Lexington, and Faith Wilson and husband Lloyd of Trinity; sister, Susie Parker of Bennettsville, S.C.; grandchildren, Taylor Jenkins; Gracie Jenkins, Daniel Graham and wife Heather, Spencer Graham and wife Traci, Zane Fitzgerald; and Micah Wilson; and great-granddaughter, Danielle Graham.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Smyrna Grove Community Church with the Rev. Danny Graham officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Jenkins will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. LEXINGTON — Samuel Lee Persiani, 68, of Lexington died Nov. 9, 2013. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Salisbury National Cemetery. Arrangements by Davidson Funeral Home.
HIGH POINT — Martha Kathleen Shelton. 92, formerly of 113 E. Peachtree Drive, High Point, passed away at Hospice Home at High Point on Nov. 11 at 7:25 a.m. after declining health for about five years.
She was born in Pinnacle, N.C., on March 1, 1921, to Wesley Marshall Gordon and Pearl Patterson Gordon. She married Troy Thomas Shelton on Dec. 24, 1941, and they lived a wonderful life together for 58 years. She was a lifelong resident of High Point and attended Oak View Methodist Church. She was employed by Drexel Heritage and retired after 40 years of service. Her greatest passion was baking, and she will be remembered always for her wonderful cakes and homemade bread. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and a loyal friend to all that knew her – a very special lady who will be dearly missed.
Also surviving are one daughter, Nancy Shelton Williams and husband David Lee Williams of Anaheim, Calif.; and one grandson, Jeffrey Myers Caldwell of Hudson, N.C.; two great-grandchildren, Troy Preston Caldwell of Greensboro and Carly Rene Caldwell of Winston Salem. Also surviving are her sisters, Ruth Gordon Curlee and Lucille Gordon Kenerly both of High Point, N.C.
A graveside service will be held Friday afternoon, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m. at Floral Garden Park Cemetery in High Point for friends and family.
