LEXINGTON — Elizabeth P. Craver, 81, of Lexington, departed this life on Saturday, March 2, 2013. Funeral service will be Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at Ezekiel AME Zion Church with family visitation a half-hour before the service. Arrangement are in the care of Roberts Funeral Service.

WINSTON-SALEM — Mrs. Martha Graham, 74 of Winston-Salem died on Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Hospice Home at High Point following an extended illness. Arrangements are incomplete at this time. Johnson and Sons High Point is assisting the family.
HIGH POINT — Mr. Austin Harris, age 92, departed this earthly life on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, at his residence. Austin was born on August 19, 1920, in Randolph County, NC, to the late Seafe and Clara Holes Harris.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Grace.
He is survived by four sons, Kenny Harris, Chris (Angela) Harris, Richard (Katie) Crouch and Johnny Crouch, all of High Point; five daughters, Linda Harris, Debrah Harris, Doris Crouch, Joyce Crouch and Brenda Crouch; special friends, Grace Martin and Rhonda Grace; a host of grandchildren other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Solid Rock Baptist Church. Family visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Dr. John Greene Herring Jr.
THOMASVILLE — Dr. John Greene Herring Jr., a resident of Thomasville, NC, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2013, at the Piedmont Crossing Retirement Community.
Dr. John Greene Herring, Jr. (Jack) was born in Tifton, Georgia on July 31, 1915 to Ruby Leigh Hewitt Herring and Editor John Greene Herring, Sr. He completed his public school education at Tifton High School in 1933. He attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia, finishing in 1935. He next attended the University of Georgia College of Agriculture in Athens, Georgia, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture in 1937. In 1940 he married Esther Ruth Wood of Baxley, Georgia. They had two children, Doris Esther Herring Russell of Whispering Pines, NC, and John Greene Herring, III of Guatemala.
During World War II, Jack Herring served in the 20th M.R.U. of the 7th Army Headquarters. When discharged, he returned to the University of Georgia and pursued a degree in Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1950. Since that date, he practiced large and small animal medicine in Thomasville, NC, until retiring in 1980.
He is a life member of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association and the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association, member of the N.C. Academy of Small Animal Medicine, member and past president of Thomasville Lions club, member and past director of Thomasville Chamber of Commerce, member of Memorial United Methodist Church and Administrative Board, past superintendent of the Sunday School Board, past president of R.L. Pope Bible Class and past president of Methodist Men’s Club.
His wife, Ruth Herring, and three sisters and one brother preceded him in death.
Surviving are two brothers, Paul Herring of Fort Myers, Florida, and Tim Herring of Melbourne, Florida. Also surviving are daughter, Doris Esther Herring Russell and her husband Bill Russell of Whispering Pines, NC; son, John Greene Herring III and wife Sybil Francis of Guatemala. His grandchildren are Russ Russell and his wife Kristi of Concord, NC, and Chelsea Russell Winicki and her husband Christian of Jacksonville, Florida. His great-grandchildren, Britain, Emory, and Kinley Russell of Concord, NC, and Kiely Winicki of Jacksonville, Florida.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, at Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Peggy Finch officiating. Interment will follow in the Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville, NC. HIGH POINT — Mrs. Barbara Mitchell, 70, also known as “BJ,” made her eternal transition from this earthly life on March 1, 2013.
Barbara was born on February 27, 1943, to the late Raynell Johnson and Queen Ester Johnson in High Point. She lived most of her life in Newark, New Jersey, and has been a resident of High Point for the past 23 years where she retired as a CNA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Mitchell.
Surviving relatives include one son, Raynell Hawthorne (Tara) of the home; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a host of cousins and very special friends.

Ronald W. Parris
TRINITY — Ronald W. Parris, 68, passed away suddenly on Monday, March 4, 2013, at High Point Regional Hospital. He was the loving husband of Virginia Darlene (Kirk) Parris to whom he married on May 23, 2009.
Mr. Parris was born on October 23, 1944, in Winston-Salem, a son of the late William Oscar and Helen Ruth (Mabery) Parris. He was a former plant manager of Burlington Industries for 23 years until working for Reliable Bedding for over 30 years.
He was a former member of Pilot View Baptist Church, where he acted as both a treasure and deacon.
In his spare time, he enjoyed dancing and listening to beach music, working in his flower garden and antique shopping.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Parris is survived by a son, Jeffrey S. Parris and his wife, Cindy of Franklin, TN; a stepdaughter, Shea M. Croft of Greensboro; five grandchildren, Alana M. Parris of Franklin, TN, Felicia P. Raines and her husband, Jason of Franklin, TN, Jaquelyn-Marie Croft of Greensboro, Juliana Croft of Greensboro, and Salleigh M. Kirk of Thomasville; three brothers, Richard L. Parris and his wife, Karan of Valparaiso, IN, Robert W. Parris and his wife, Kemper of Archdale, and Lester Ray and his wife, Dody of Kernersville; four sisters, Dixie P. Hankins, Betty Diana Phillips and her husband, Harold; Char R. Champion, and Wanda S. Steffey, all of High Point; and several nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Ann (McDaniel) Parris of 42 years; and a sister, Patsy Ann Turner.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Cumby Family Funeral Service, 206 Trindale Road, Archdale. Funeral arrangements are private at the request of the family.

Ida Mae Rider
GREENSBORO — Ida Mae Rider, 72, passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Ida was born on April 30, 1940, in Jamestown, the daughter of Ervin F. and Ollie McCleod Smith. She worked with Hatteras Yacht for more than 30 years. Ida was a devoted mother, grandmother and sister. She loved her family dearly and she will be deeply missed.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2:00 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Thursday at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel.
Ida is survived by her children, Tony Rider and Sherry Smith, both of Greensboro, NC, James Rider and wife Alicia of Kernersville, NC; sisters, Mary Knaup and Jewel Pope, both of High Point, NC, and Patsy Owensby and husband Larry of Greensboro, NC; brothers, Grady C. Smith and wife Nancy of High Point, NC and Larry Eugene Smith and wife Ethel of Trinity, NC. Also surviving are her loving grandchildren; Christopher, Anna, Ellie, Randy, Jessica, Laurren, Finley and great-grandchild, Cameron.

Vera Parks Storey
ASHEBORO — Mrs. Vera Parks Storey, 80, of Asheboro, NC, died Monday, March 4, 2013, at her residence.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, at Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church, 222 Mt. Zion Church Road, Thomasville, with Dr. E. Keith Carroll officiating. Burial will follow at Pisgah UMC Cemetery in Asheboro.
A native of Darien, GA, Mrs. Storey was born December 2, 1932. She was the daughter of the late Walter Parks and Fleta Luck Parks. She was a graduate of Seagrove High School, Southern Wesleyan University and High Point University. She was a former teacher in the Asheboro City Schools. Mrs. Storey also worked at Ridge Funeral Home. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Storey.
She was a member of the Wesleyan Church for more than 50 years where she served in a number of areas including Sunday school teacher, member of the Local Board of Administration and Director of Children’s Ministries. She also served on the North Carolina East District Board of Administration and was a Trustee at Southern Wesleyan University. She was the first woman ever elected to the General Board of the Wesleyan Church, Indianapolis, Indiana, where she served for eight years.
Mrs. Storey is survived by son, Stephen Storey and wife, Jill, of Thomasville; daughter, Starr Storey Cromer and husband, Troy, of Greensboro; grandsons, John Eldridge “Ridge” Storey, Lleyton Charles Storey, both of Thomasville, Adam Parks Cromer of Greensboro; sisters, Mary Parks Mitchell of Six Mile, SC, Ruth Parks Newby of Jamestown, and Kate Parks King and husband Morris of Sanford.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Ridge Funeral Home.
Mrs. Storey will be missed by her family and friends, but her legacy will live on in Stephen, Starr, Ridge, Lleyton and Adam.

Olean Hucks Varner
HIGH POINT — On March 4, 2013, Olean left behind the pain and suffering of this world and moved on to be with her savior Jesus Christ. Olean was born February 7, 1924, in High Point, NC, to Beulah and Benjamin Hucks. Olean was the youngest daughter in a family of 12 children. She is preceded in death by both parents, nine brothers and sisters, and one son, Larry Varner. Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Don Varner Sr.; two sons, Donnie and wife Judy, Wayne and wife Marcia; and two brothers, Earl and Brantley Hucks. She was blessed with six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Olean worked beside her husband Don as they risked all in opening the family business, Varner Electric Inc. She was office manager for many years. After retiring, she devoted most of her time helping with her grandchildren and spending time with family and friends. Olean loved to dance and with her partner, Don, spent many happy years on the dance floor. The time together and friendships established were precious to them both.
Olean was a faithful member of Christ United Methodist Church in High Point where she was a member of the McFarland Sunday School Class and many women’s organizations within the church. She was diligent in raising her children in a Christian home and stressed regular church attendance and worship.
Olean was a beautiful lady with a great smile and will leave a void in the hearts of all who knew her. Now all pain and doubt are gone. She is smiling into the glorious face of Jesus and is again that lovely and vibrant lady we remember.
A special thank you is extended to the nurses and the entire staff of McEwen House at Maryfield Pennybyrn Nursing facility. They cared for Olean with compassion and love the last few months of her life. The Varner family will forever be grateful for their total effort in keeping Olean as comfortable and happy as possible.
A celebration of Olean’s life will be held Saturday, March 9, at 11:00 a.m. in Sechrest Funeral Chapel in High Point with the Reverend Matthew Farabow and Reverend Hubert Brown officiating. Interment will follow the service in Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service Saturday from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
