DENTON — Mrs. Vergie Earnhardt Benner, age 93, of Denton died Thursday, January 3, 2013. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Briggs Funeral Home in Denton is serving the Benner family.

BURLINGTON — Edna Gentry, 85, passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2013. Cremation services entrusted to Triad Cremation Society & Chapel.

 

Revon Withers Godfrey

HIGH POINT — Mrs. Revon Withers Godfrey, 80, peacefully made her transition on December 30, 2012, at Hospice Home at High Point. She was born on March 26, 1932, in Cornelius, NC, to the late James and Ossie Pickens Withers. She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, James J. McElwee; two daughters, Bernita Smith and Brenda Godfrey; one son, Gary Smith; and one brother, James J. McElwee.

She attended Mecklenburg County Schools and later came to High Point where she made her home. She was a professional Dry Cleaner, in which she took an abundance of pride on or off the job. She retired from Pro Clean.

She leaves to cherish her memories, two sons, Carl Smith and Michael Godfrey, both of High Point, NC; two daughters, A. Michelle King of Durham, NC, and Zerita Townsend of High Point, NC; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank (Flora) Withers and Joe Withers, both of High Point, NC; two sisters, Brownie Miller and Ophelia Gainey both of High Point, NC; one devoted friend, Jesse Pierson of Greensboro, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013, 3:00 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel, 1810 Brockett Avenue. Interment will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park, High Point, NC. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 2:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service Inc., 1810 Brockett Avenue, High Point, NC.

Betty Jean Tillman Greene

HIGH POINT — Betty Jean Tillman Greene, 68, took her eternal rest on Sunday, December 30, 2012. She was born on August 5, 1944, in Richmond County, NC, to Mr. George and Annie Mae Strong Tillman.

She leaves to cherish her memories; her husband, Robert Greene; a loving daughter, Wanda Crawford of the home; two grandchildren, Reynada and Laracia Crawford, both of the home; one brother, George (Rachel) Tillman Jr. of Hamlet, NC; nine sisters-in-law; six brothers-in-law; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will commence at 12:00 p.m. January 5, 2013, at Living Water Baptist Church. Family visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the church and other times at the family’s home located at 314 Weavil St. Burial will be in Dobbins Height Cemetery in Hamlet, NC. HIGH POINT — Michael Stephen Holden, 66, passed away Thursday, January 03, 2013, at the Hospice Home at High Point. A private graveside service will be held Saturday. Davis Funerals and Cremations is serving the family.

 

Robert Jackson

THOMASVILLE — Mr. Robert Lee Jackson, 81, a resident of 210 Winston St., Thomasville, NC, departed this life on Friday, December 28, 2012, at the home of his son in Charlotte, NC.He was born on March 7, 1931, in Florence County, SC, to the late Frank Lee and Rena Jackson. He was also preceded in death by two children, Robert Lee Jackson Jr. and Kathy Renea Jackson; six siblings, Curley Jackson, Henrietta Sims, John Jackson, Mary Jackson-Bell, Bradley Alexander and Lilly Mae Briggs.

He was educated in Florence County, SC. He worked and retired from Henley Paper Company after 25 years of service. He was last employed with the Guilford County School System.

Robert was a member of Miracle Temple Holiness Church under the late Elder James E. Compton, where he served on the Trustee Board. He was a faithful member for more than 30 years and loved to praise the Lord.

He leaves to cherish his memories his children, Mary Ann Brown of Baltimore, MD; Pearl Jackson-Graham, Ola Mae (Albert) Pearson, both of Tuberville, SC; James (Alice) Jackson of Lych, SC; Mitchell Jackson, Karen (Byron) Jackson, both of Thomasville, NC; Larry (Gloria) Jackson of Timmonsville, SC, Patricia (Van) Price, Curly Jackson and Lander B. Jackson, all of High Point, NC; Henry Jackson of Charlotte, NC; Sue (Brian Keith) Jackson Robbins of Jamestown, NC; two brothers, General Lee Jackson and Bobby (Martha) Jackson, both of Florence, SC; one sister, Amell Jackson Erwin of Winston-Salem, NC; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013, 12:00 p.m. at Williams Memorial C.M.E. Church, 3400 Triangle Lake Road. Interment will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park, High Point, NC. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.

Rosa Lovelace

STALEY — Minister Rosa Jean Foster Lovelace, 61, passed away on Monday December 17, 2012. She was born on June 2, 1951, in Gaffney, SC, to the late Rev. Earl Foster and Annie McCluney Foster.

Rosa was a graduate of Ragsdale High School. She received degrees from North Carolina Central University and the University of Virginia. She was a teacher, principal and employee at the Central Office in Guilford County School System. Also, she was a teacher at North Carolina A&T State University. She was the principal of Lexington Middle School.

She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Charles Lovelace; one daughter, Dedra (Detroit) Yancey; one son, Lavar (Tina) Lovelace; five grandchildren; two brothers, Roosevelt (Judith) Foster and Mack (Tammy) Foster; three sisters, Annie Rosella Thomas, Minister Carolyn (James) Nelson and Ella (Kenneth) Nelson; and one sister-in-law, Johnsie Foster.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at 12:00 p.m. at Lexington Senior High School Auditorium, Lexington, NC.

Arlis Elmer Lineberry 

TRINITY — Mr. Arlis Elmer Lineberry, 83, of Trinity, passed away on Thursday, January 03, 2013, at High Point Regional.

Arlis was born on January 31, 1929, in Carroll County, VA, a son of the late Floyd Lineberry and Celia Davis Lineberry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother. He was of the Christian faith. On December 24, 1949, he married the love of his life, the former Viola Irene Edwards. Arlis retired from High Point Glass and Decorative Company as a craftsman making stained-glass church windows. He also had a special talent in woodworking, arts and craft. Arlis was a musician most of his life. He was a member of The Town and Country Boys and several other bands throughout his life. Arlis was an avid golfer and gardener. He was a loving and caring man who was dedicated to his family. Arlis was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Viola Lineberry of the home; two children, LeRoy Lineberry and his wife, Sue, of High Point and Diane Lineberry Dall and her fiancé Richard Priddy of Trinity; one sister, Mary Bethel Phillips of Mount Airy; three grandchildren, Tracy R. Cox and her husband, James, Jena E. Lineberry and Amanda M. Lineberry; one great-grandson, Aaron Cox; one brother-in-law, Ellis Edwards and his wife, Loretta, of Galax, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 5, in the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service with Rev. Darryl Love and Rev. Randall Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow at Floral Garden Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

THOMASVILLE — Kathleen “Katie” Jane Markham, 88, passed away December 30, 2012, at Hospice Home at High Point.

She was born July 23, 1924, in Guilford County, NC, to the late Charles Boyd and Annie Jane Hogan Shives.

Katie was preceded in death by her husband, James Markham; daughter, Laura Markham Sprye; brother, Charles Q. Shives; and sisters, Mildred Deal and Lillie Mae Margaret Shives.

She is survived by daughters, Nancy Joyce and husband Coy; brother, Reverend Harold Shives and wife Martha; sister, Loretta Yates; sister-in-law, Alice Shives; grandchildren, Kim Jones, Dean Joyce and great-grandson, Trevor Jones.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2013, at Thomasville Funeral Home followed with a chapel service at 3 p.m. Entombment will follow at Floral Garden Memorial Park.

Edgar Wood

VERO BEACH, Fla. — Edgar R Wood Sr., 96, died Dec. 23, 2012, in Vero Beach, Fl.

Edgar was born in Dobson County, North Carolina, and throughout his life resided in High Point, NC, Sanford, FL and Vero Beach, Fl. He worked in a cotton mill in High Point, NC, and became a general contractor in Sanford, Fl. He is survived by his son, Edgar R. Wood Jr. of Vero Beach, FL; a stepson, Max Joyce of Mt Gilead, NC; a step-daughter, Donna Smith of Robbins, Tenn.; a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was of the Baptist faith, a longtime Gideon member, and a follower of Billy Graham. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Wood in 2001.
