Mary Louise Gatchell
THOMASVILLE — Mrs. Mary Louise Thomason Gatchell, 86, a resident of 118 Hiatt Road, died Sunday, December 30, 2012, at Abbotts Creek Care & Rehabilitation Center. She was born on March 6, 1926, in Davidson County to Fred Lee Thomason and Stella Mae Swing Thomason. She worked at Wahoo’s Restaurant and she and her husband, Norris were charter members of Hasty Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norris Higgins Gatchell on June 23, 1980; sisters, Elizabeth Shell and Alta Rae (Bill) Black; and sons-in-law, Andy Starrett and Jimmy Shore.
Surviving are five daughters, Judy Howard and husband Marvin of Trinity, Trudy Starrett of Drexel, NC, Dianne Leonard of Thomasville, Treva Floyd and husband Doug of Thomasville, and Frances Hethcox and husband Doug of Trinity; 12 grandchildren, Annette, Jeff, Terry, Patrick, Mark, Donna, Gary, Timmy, Jason, Travis, Donald, and Danielle; 17 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville with Pastor Dr. E. Keith Carroll officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and at other times at the home. John Trussia Bennett
WEST CHESTER, PA. — John Trussia Bennett, III, age 88, formerly of High Point, NC, died Thursday, December 27, 2012, at his home in West Chester, PA. John (Skeet) was born in High Point on October 3, 1924, to the late John Trussia Bennett, Jr. and Vivian Sechrest Bennett.
John graduated from High Point High School in 1941 and joined the Army Air Corp, where he served under General Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines and later in Japan during WWII. John was a gunnery instructor prior to his commission under General MacArthur.
After his honorable discharge from his military service, John worked as a civil engineer and later joined Sears Roebuck and Company in Winston-Salem, NC, until his retirement after 25 years.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Inez Hunsucker Bennett. He is survived by his son, Rodney Morris Bennett, also of West Chester, PA, and one sister-in-law, Edna Hunsucker Allen of Blackstone, VA.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Sechrest Funeral Home in High Point. Services for Mr. Bennett will be conducted in the Sechrest Chapel at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2013. Burial will follow at Floral Garden Park Cemetery in High Point.

Francis Edward Best
HIGH POINT — Mr. Francis Edward Best, age 79, passed away December 29 at the Hospice Home of High Point.
Mr. Best was born in Westfield, Mass., on October 12, 1933, to Thomas Charles and Madeline May Best. He graduated from Westfield State College and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict aboard the U.S. Tarawa Air Craft Carrier from 1950-1954. As a civilian, Mr. Best was a rehabilitation counselor for the Department of the Navy until his retirement on October 12, 1996. Mr. Best was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Bishop Hafey Council #4507 of the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Irene Todd and two brothers, Thomas and Ronald Best.
Surviving are his wife Irene May Nitkowski Best of the home and one son; Timothy Frances Best and wife Joyce Bacik of High Point. There are two grandchildren, Craig Chapman and Alexander Best and one great-grandchild, Aubrey Mae Chapman.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church on Friday, January 4, at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.

HIGH POINT – Mr. Donald Ray Carter, 58, a kind and loving child of God, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 27, 2012, at Hospice Home at High Point. Donald Ray, lovingly known as “Carter Pill” was born on June 13, 1954, to Leroy Gantt and the late Mary Lee Carter in High Point, NC. He was raised by his great-grandmother the late Doshie Carter and nurtured in the Methodist faith during his young life. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Helen Carter.
He attended High Point Central High School and was a former employee of Slane Hosiery Mills and Van York Auto Mall in High Point, NC.
“Carter Pill” was the product of a close-knit family and one could easily discern the love and care they shared amongst one another. While the family will truly miss his presence, they are comforted knowing he is free of illness and pain and is now enfolded in the loving care of God. His spiritual presence shall forever remain in our hearts.
He leaves to cherish his memories; his father, Leroy (Sarah) Gantt of Winston-Salem, NC; two sons, Christian Carter and Donald Ray Hicks, one daughter, Mrs. LaConya (Travis) Mitchell, all of High Point, NC; two grandsons, Joshua Brown and Nicauvi Mitchell, both of High Point, NC; five sisters, Mrs. Brenda (Lorenzo) Smith, Ms. Linda Carter and Mrs. Sharon (Terry) Miller, all of High Point, NC; Mrs. Vanessa (John) Foddrell and Ms. Debra Carter both of Greensboro, NC; two brothers, Otis (Shirley) Carter of Durham, NC, and Marvin (Donna) Gash, Jr. of Sophia, NC; one aunt, Ms. Betty Timberlake of High Point, NC; a very devoted friend and caregiver, Ms. Rosie Ezekeil of High Point, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral service will be held at Wednesday, January 2, 2013, 12:00 p.m. at Williams Memorial C.M.E. Church, 3400 Triangle Lake Road. Interment will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park, High Point, NC. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.

HIGH POINT — Kenneth Ray Rich, age 69, of High Point, formerly of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., passed away on Dec. 29, 2012, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Ken was born on Oct. 21, 1943, in High Point, N.C., son of the late Kenneth Russell and Edith Dickens Rich. He graduated from High Point High School and High Point College. He retired from Harriss & Covington Hosiery Mills as production manager.
He is survived by daughter Sandy Ilderton; son Kenneth Michael Rich; and daughter-in-law Miranda; three grandchildren, Connor Kirkman and Aaron and Drew Rich, all of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., who affectionately called him “Pops;” and sisters Brenda Pressley and husband Robert, and Cynthia Rich, all of High Point, N.C.; and two nephews.
A private family memorial service will be held at North Myrtle Beach, S.C., at a later date. The family requests that memorials be made to the Community Clinic of High Point.

HIGH POINT — Josie Dawkins Crump, 62, of High Point, passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at Triad Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was born September 10, 1950, to Robert Dawkins and Mattie Mae Brown in Spartanburg, SC.
Josie was employed as a housekeeper for many years.
Loved ones she will be leaving behind include her daughter, Lisa Dawkins of High Point; four beautiful grandchildren, Lakisha Dawkins, Aaron Hicks, Eric Dawkins, and Jessica Dawkins; six lovely great-grandchildren, Lamarion Dawkins, Ray-zon Rowland, Da-Zarien Dawkins, Makiya Dawkins, Dashaun Dawkins and the newest member, Martrell Dawkins; and we await the arrival of De-Oanna Robinson; a host of other relatives and friends.

TRINITY — Grayson Lee Spencer, Sr., 90, died Dec. 31, 2012, at High Point Regional Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale. Visitation will be held at the funeral home one hour before the service.
SOPHIA — Mr. Herman (Buddy) Edward Poole, 88, resident of Sophia, died December 30, 2012, at High Point Regional Hospital.
Mr. Poole was born July 14, 1924, in Randolph County, a son of the late Troy Franklin and Maie Osborne Poole. He was veteran of the U.S. Army and had served in the 78th Lightening Division in World War II. A resident of this area most of his life, he was a member of High Point Seventh Day Adventist Church and had worked as a carpenter and electrician. His wife, the former Lila Ruth Edgemon, preceded him in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Vickie Poole Walters and husband Richard of Florida and Cynthia Poole Slack and husband Darrel of Tennessee; a son, Timothy E. Poole and wife Amanda of Archdale; two sisters, Virginia Martin of Florida and Rosalee Clodfelter of High Point; one brother, Richard Poole and wife Jewel of Glenola; and two step-daughters, Nancy Nelson and husband Bloyce of Florida and Joyce Carbajol of California.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Ebenezer Memorial Church with Rev. Joe Coltrane and Pastor Larentia Serban officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
