ASHEBORO — Mr. Amos Grant Begley, 93, of Asheboro, NC, died Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Funeral will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 14, 2013, at East Side Baptist Church. HAW RIVER — Connie Elaine Braden, 68, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2013. Cremation services entrusted to Triad Cremation Society & Chapel.

 

Benjamin Heath “Ben” Collier

KERNERSVILLE — Benjamin Heath “Ben” Collier, a resident of Kernersville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, April 8, 2013. He was born on July 7, 1961, in Louisville, Kentucky, and graduated from William Fleming High School in Roanoke, Virginia. He attended Wake Forest University on a football scholarship, and he later served in the U.S. Army. On June 7, 1998, he married the love of his life, Cammie Harris. Together they owned and operated Sawbriar Acoustic Stage in Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, a labor of love where Ben also served as a sound engineer. Ben was a passionate horticulturalist, working in that capacity for many years at both the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and Reynolda Gardens of Wake Forest University. He loved watching his Wake Forest Demon Deacons, and being in touch with nature ... gardening, body surfing at the beach, white water canoeing, and hiking.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Wesley Collier. In addition to his wife, Cammie Harris Collier, he is survived by his mother, Patricia Grace Collier of Roanoke; his brothers, Steve Collier and wife Sharon of Lexington, Kentucky; Michael Collier and wife Evalee of Lexington, Kentucky; Andy Collier and wife Diana of Frisco, TX; Joel Collier and wife Tracy of Roanoke; Reid Collier and wife Savita of Broomfield, Colorado; and nephews, Carl Collier of Frisco, Texas, and Reid Collier II of Tallahassee, Florida.

A service to celebrate Ben’s life will be held Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., from the Union Cross Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Mark Ashworth and Mr. Carl Q. “Skip” Grace officiating. Interment will follow in Union Cross Moravian Church Graveyard. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:45 until 1:45 p.m. at Union Cross Baptist Church. The family would like to thank Dr. Richard Brodkin and his staff for the extraordinary care and concern shown to Ben during his illness. A special garden will be created in Ben’s memory at the home that Ben and Cammie had just built.

Elizabeth S. Gearren

ASHEBORO — Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Smith Gearren, 77, of Asheboro, NC, died Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at West Chapel United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2013, at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, 1655 Staley’s Farm Road, Asheboro, NC. Harry Lee Hauser 

HIGH POINT — Harry Lee Hauser of High Point, NC, passed away peacefully Thursday morning at his home at River Landing at Sandy Ridge. Harry is survived by his wife of 67 years, Willie E. Hauser; his daughter, Susan and husband Ed; his son, David and wife Nancy;and his daughter, Anne and husband Mike. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Kimber and husband Burt, Stacy and husband Tyson, Megan, Betsy, Kevin, Patrick and Jeff; and great-granddaughters, Tate and Carly. Additionally, Harry is survived by his brother, Robert E. Hauser and his wife Betty of River Landing.

Harry was born in Winston-Salem, NC, on June 24, 1922. He graduated from High Point University in 1943 where he met Willie. After serving in World War II in India, he returned to High Point and started S.E. Hauser, Inc. Institutional Foods and served as its President.

Harry was a loving family man and with Willie started a tradition in 1973 of annual family vacations that will be remembered by all.

Harry was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church. He held practically every key lay position in the church at various times. Harry was also a longtime member of the High Point Host Lions Club. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award by Lions International for his exemplary service.

Harry served in many other capacities civically, including leadership in the Panther Club at HPU, the Board of Trustees at River Landing, and SCORE.

Visitation will be at River Landing at Sandy Ridge Road on Saturday April 13 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.. A memorial service will be held on Sunday April 14 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of High Point.

Ry’Chon Hawkins

HIGH POINT — A beloved son, father and friend, Ry’Chon Demond Hawkins, Sr., 18, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 7, 2013. Ry’Chon was born Oct. 29, 1994, in Salisbury, NC. He is the son of Kimberly Hawkins Harrington, Sharif Harrington (stepfather) and Milton Parks II. Ry’Chon, also known affectionately as “Hawkins” by his closest friends, was raised in High Point, NC, and attended Guilford County Schools. He was a senior at Lucy Ragsdale High School and a member of the upcoming graduating class of 2013. He had a true passion and love for his family and friends, but his greatest passion was his son, Ry’Chon Hawkins, Jr. (RJ).

Ry’Chon leaves to cherish his memories one son, Ry’Chon Hawkins, Jr. of High Point, NC; his parents, Kimberly Hawkins Harrington and Sharif Harrington (step father) of the home; and Milton Parks II of Atlanta, GA; one stepbrother, Sharif L.R. Harrington of High Point, NC; a special friend and mother of his son, RJ, Dazia Smith of High Point, NC; grandparents, Betty and Charlie McNeely of Salisbury, NC, William and Gerri McShore of Huntsville, MO; step grandmother, Earlene Harrington of High Point NC; great-grandmother, Hannah Harrington of High Point, NC; god parents, Ella Mae Duran, Ebony Harris and Roncolyn Houston of Salisbury, NC; six aunts, three uncles, many other relatives and close friends.

The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support during this time of bereavement. We would also like to thank the faculty and students at Lucy Ragsdale High School, and the many friends attending surrounding schools in High Point.

The home going celebration for Ry’Chon will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 12:00 p.m. at New Beginnings Full Gospel Ministries, Inc., 215 Fourth Street, High Point, NC. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and other times at the home, 825 Pinecroft Street, High Point, NC. Genevieve Laura Danz Hepler

GREENSBORO — Genevieve Laura Danz Hepler died on April 10, 2013, in Greensboro, NC.

She was born March 14, 1927, in Manor, Texas, the daughter of Felix and Ruby Danz. On October 21, 1944, she married Raymond Calvin Hepler Sr. and moved to High Point, NC. They lived in High Point and Greensboro while raising their children.

She worked as a substitute teacher in the Guilford County Schools for 40 years and raised produce and sold at the Farmers Market for many years.

She is survived by four children, Carol Dills and her husband Orville of Randleman, NC; Raymond Hepler Jr. and his wife Mary Ann of High Point, NC; Rebecca Apergis and her husband Steve of Burke, VA; and Elizabeth Rich of Greensboro, NC. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Theresa Rodriguez and husband Luis, Yvette Dills, Raymond Hepler III and wife Susie, Sarah Martin and husband Randy, Andrew Hepler and wife Genny, Jason Apergis and wife Catherine, Justin Apergis, and Kevin Rich and wife Lisa. She is also survived by her thirteen great-grandchildren: Karen Rodriguez, Ramon Rodriguez, Adam Rodriguez, Raymond Hepler IV (Cal), Ellie Hepler, Alex Martin, Jackson Martin, Oliver Hepler, Ethan Apergis, Caroline Apergis, Hailey Doan, Deven Tidwell, and Jonah Rich. She is also survived by her brothers Robert Danz and sisters Ruth Anderson and JoAnn Baldridge.

Affectionately called Granny by all who loved her, she loved to spend time with her family. She enjoyed crocheting afghans, playing solitaire, and reading books.

A graveside service will be held at Floral Garden Memorial Park on Saturday, April 13 at 1:00 p.m.

Michael Isaiah Raper 

HIGH POINT — Michael Isaiah Raper, 22, of High Point departed this earthly life on Monday, April 8, 2013 in High Point.

Family visitation will be held at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Thomasville, NC, on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 12 noon. Funeral service will begin at 12:30 pm at the church with Rev. Goode officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park, High Point.

Michael was born in Thomasville to Ernest Raper and Barbara Roberson on June 6, 1990. He graduated from High Point Central High School in 2008. He went on to further his education at Guilford Technical Community College. Michael was an avid sports fan who loved football.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers.

Michael will be greatly missed. He is survived by his parents, Ernest (Karla) Raper Jr. of Greensboro, NC, and Barbara (John) Roberson of High Point; three sisters, Tashica Harrington, NaDean Raper and Niunna Roberson all of High Point; five children, Michael Jr., Jeremiah, Da’mani, Myziah, and Ma-Kiyah Raper of High Point; grandmothers, Emma Currie and Betty Pegues; a host of other family and friends. GREENSBORO — Kelley Lester Saferight, 76, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2013. Cremation services entrusted to Triad Cremation Society & Chapel.

 

Haywood Watts, Jr.

HIGH POINT – In the early morning hours on Sunday, April 7, 2013, God dispatched angles to High Point Regional Hospital to accompany Haywood home. Haywood (Donnie) Watts, Jr. earthly journey began on October 9, 1940, in High Point, NC, to the late Haywood Watts, Sr. and Mary Alice Smitherman Watts.

Haywood grew up in High Point and graduated from William Penn High School, and was employed at Highland Cotton Mills as a Maintenance Associate.

He always had a smile on his face and never met a stranger. In his days of better health, he was always willing to help anyone that he could.

He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Vertis Smitherman, Sr.; eight sisters and one brother.

Surviving are three daughters, Sebrina (Howard) Mason of Asheboro, NC, Ayonia (Wilton) Bynum of High Point, NC, and Tonya Watts of the home; one son, Tony Allen of High Point, NC; fifteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one special sister, Jeanette S. (Al) Williams of Greensboro, NC; one aunt, Mary Roseboro of High Point, NC; five sisters, three brothers, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel, 1810 Brockett Ave, High Point, NC. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 2:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.
