Norma Braswell

HIGH POINT — Norma Jean Henard Braswell, 72, departed this life on March 29, 2013, at High Point Regional Hospital. She was born on August 23, 1940, to Bessie Gannaway and John Martin, both of whom preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death are one son, Willie D. Braswell Jr.; one granddaughter, Angela B. Taylor; and one sister, Peggy H. Grant.

Jean graduated from William Penn High School. She went on to be the first supervisor of housing at the grand opening of the Radison Hotel, now Best Western, then on to Travelodge, now Atrium Inn.

Her life was lived for her family, and she will be sorely missed by them.

Survivors include her husband, Willie D. Braswell Sr. of High Point, NC; one son, Ronald (Sharon) Henard of Fountain, CO; five daughters, Annette, Rosalind and Krika Braswell, all of High Point, NC, Leila Braswell of Winston-Salem, NC, and Vickey (Charles) Phillips of Greensboro, NC; 22 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Dannella Braswell of High Point, NC; one brother, James (Sandra) Henard; two sisters, Lucretia Henard and Bessie H. (Ronald) Watkins of High Point; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, April 12, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel, 1810 Brockett Ave., High Point, NC. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 12:30 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park, High Point, NC.

Ben Collier

KERNERSVILLE — Benjamin Heath “Ben” Collier, a resident of Kernersville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, April 8, 2013. He was born on July 7, 1961, in Louisville, Kentucky, and graduated from William Fleming High School in Roanoke, Virginia. He attended Wake Forest University on a football scholarship, and he later served in the U.S. Army. On June 7, 1998, he married the love of his life, Cammie Harris. Together they owned and operated Sawbriar Acoustic Stage in Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, a labor of love where Ben also served as a sound engineer. Ben was a passionate horticulturalist, working in that capacity for many years at both the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and Reynolda Gardens of Wake Forest University. He loved watching his Wake Forest Demon Deacons and being in touch with nature ... gardening, body surfing at the beach, whitewater canoeing and hiking.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Wesley Collier. In addition to his wife, Cammie Harris Collier, he is survived by his mother, Patricia Grace Collier of Roanoke; his brothers, Steve Collier and wife Sharon of Lexington, Kentucky, Michael Collier and wife Evalee of Lexington, Kentucky, Andy Collier and wife Diana of Frisco, TX, Joel Collier and wife Tracy of Roanoke, Reid Collier and wife Savita of Broomfield, Colorado; and nephews, Carl Collier of Frisco, Texas, and Reid Collier II of Tallahassee, Florida.

A service to celebrate Ben’s life will be held Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Union Cross Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Mark Ashworth and Mr. Carl Q. “Skip” Grace officiating. Interment will follow in Union Cross Moravian Church Graveyard. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:45 until 1:45 p.m. at Union Cross Baptist Church. The family would like to thank Dr. Richard Brodkin and his staff for the extraordinary care and concern shown to Ben during his illness. A special garden will be created in Ben’s memory at the home that Ben and Cammie had just built.

Bobbie Huggins Gray

HIGH POINT — Bobbie Huggins Gray, 83, passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at High Point Regional Hospital. She was born in Guilford County to the late George Ross and Ada Farmer Huggins. She worked as seamstress her whole life. Bobbie was a member of First Christian Church in High Point. She loved her family and was Mama and granny to everyone. She also had a great love for flowers and birds. Bobbie was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Lee Cecil, in 1985. She is survived by her daughters, Terri Eaton and husband Jimmy and Karen Branson. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Mark Branson, Sydney Eaton and Jake Eaton; and great-grandchild, Brayden Branson.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church in High Point followed by internment at Floral Garden Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Sechrest Funeral Services in High Point.

GREENSBORO — Phillip Wayne Keith, 65, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Cremation services entrusted to Triad Cremation Society & Chapel.

 

Ora L. Milligan

HARRISBURG — Mrs. Ora Lee Milligan, 85, passed away April 8, 2013, after a lengthy illness.

She was born June 21, 1927, in Hickory, the daughter of Marvin Eugene and Johnsie Keota Raby Bumgarner. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in High Point where she was active in the United Methodist Women Circle. Mrs. Milligan retired in 1987 as branch manager of Citizen Savings and Loan in High Point.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, William J. Milligan Jr.; son, James Milligan; brothers, Lewis and Tommy Bumgarner; and sisters, Carolyn Bumgarner and Dorothy Shull.

She is survived by two sons; Robert L. Milligan and wife Maria of McLean, Va., and William E. Milligan and wife, Barbara of Harrisburg; three grandchildren; Tracey-Jane Orwig and husband Rick, Christopher Milligan and wife Katie, and Tess Cooper and husband Ricky; three great-granddaughters, Riley, Reese and Ryan Orwig; two great-grandsons, Jack and Benjamin Milligan; three brothers, Gene and Johnny Bumgarner of Hickory and Carroll Bumgarner of Granite Falls; and one sister, Betty Asherbranner of Hickory.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13, with Rev. Terry Faulkenbury of West Cabarrus Church officiating. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Kathy Murrow

HIGH POINT — Kathy Joan Murrow, 68, a resident of High Point, passed away Monday, April 8, 2013.

She was born on February 13, 1945, to the late John Lincoln Murrow Jr., and Ann Smith Murrow, and had been a resident of High Point all of her life. She was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. Kathy was a very talented and gifted artist. She was a member of the Salem Band for more than 25 years and a member of the Salem Orchestra for more than 20 years. She enjoyed needlepoint, knitting and playing the flute and piccolo. In addition to her parents, preceding her in death were two brothers; John Lincoln Murrow III and William Spencer Murrow.

She is survived by her siblings, Polly Ann Brown Jones of Archdale, James Craig Murrow and his wife Willa of High Point, Roxie Murrow Whitley and her husband James of High Point, Phyllis Murrow Satterfield and her husband Gary of Thomasville, Sarah Murrow Clinard and her husband Jimmy of High Point, her sister-in-law, Susanne Frost Murrow of High Point. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

A private service to celebrate Kathy’s life will be held at a later date.

HIGH POINT — Thomas Alexander Watkins Sr., 72, died Thursday, April 4, 2013 at his residence.

Services will be held 12 noon Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Emmanuel Baptist Church. A visitation will be held 30 minutes prior. A viewing will be Friday, April 12, 2013, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park, Greensboro, N.C.
