Kenneth Bowen

HIGH POINT – Mr. Kenneth Bowen, 72, passed on Monday, May 13, 2013, at High Point Regional Hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time at Phillips Funeral Service, Inc., High Point, NC.

 

Rida Hollowell Ingram Boyles 

HIGH POINT — Rida Hollowell Ingram Boyles, 82, passed away Monday, May 13, 2013, at Pennybyrn at Maryfield. She was the loving wife of the late Linzy “Buddy” Elwood Boyles, her high school sweetheart, to whom she was married for 57 years.

Rida was born August 19, 1929, in High Point to the late Laurance M. and Margaret H. Ingram. She attended city schools and graduated in 1947 from High Point Central High School. In 1951 she graduated from Randolph Macon Woman’s College with an A.B. in Sociology and was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. She later went on to be the secretary and treasurer for Boyles Furniture sales until her retirement.

Mrs. Boyles was a life member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a member of their Women’s Committees of Church Missions, evangelism, and the Older Adult Commission. She was also a member of Aldersgate Sunday School Class.

She also volunteered her time with N. Memorials First Brownie Troop #4, Girl Scouts Troop #4; Pittsburgh Girl Scout Council; and was the field director and acting director of the Girl Scout Keyawee Council of High Point;.

Rida was also a member of the High Point Junior League and Sustainers Mobile Meals Delivers.

Mrs. Boyles is survived by a son, Laurence Boyles and his wife Linda of Huntington Beach, CA; and three grandchildren, Brandon Boyles of Huntington Beach, CA, Eric Boyles and his wife Nicole of Oklahoma City, OK, and Brad Boyles of Wallburg; and great-grandchildren, Dillon and Savannah Boyles. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Steve Boyles and a sister, Peggy Voigt Poole.

A celebration of life service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Al Ward and Rev. Richard Howle officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Garden Memorial Park. A visitation will be held from 12 to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.

RAMSEUR — James Franklin Cox, 65, passed away on Friday, May 10, 2013. Cremation services entrusted to Triad Cremation Society & Chapel.

 

John Donald Elkes 

ARCHDALE — John Donald Elkes, 83, of Hollywood, Florida, passed away at his home on Sunday, May 12, 2013.

He was born in Socastee, South Carolina, on October 24, 1929, son of John and Rena Bell (Dubose) Elkes.

John and his family moved to Lakeland, Florida, and eventually moved to Miami in 1957 where they lived for 40 years. Before his retirement in 1993, John began his career with Seaboard Coast Line Railroad (Amtrak) for 35 years.

Survivors include his son, Michael Elkes; two grandchildren, Michael John and Brittany Elizabeth Elkes; sisters, Gladys Henderson, Irene Ward and Betty Chambers and her husband Bill. John was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth (Tuttle) Elkes in 1985 and his second wife, Jessie (Stone) Elkes in 2008; his son, Bryce Elkes and daughter-in-law, Cheryl Leonard Elkes; and his sister, Pauline Elkes Pfosi.

A celebration of life service will be 12:00 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2013, at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, 206 Trindale Road, Archdale, with Pastor Frank Dixon officiating. A visitation will be held from 11 to 12 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Floral Garden Memorial Park.

Paul Woodrow Hicks

HIGH POINT — Paul Woodrow Hicks, 90, of High Point, died Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Green Street Baptist Church. Visitation will be at the church Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until the hour of the service. Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale is in charge of arrangements.

 

Marguerite Burton Hill 

RANDLEMAN — Mrs. Marguerite Burton Hill, 93, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Randolph Hospital.

A resident of this area all of her life, Mrs. Hill was born on October 18, 1919, in High Point to the late Martine and Mary Dicks Burton. Mrs. Hill was a member of Oak Hill Friends Meeting where she was very active in Sunday School and all church activities. The light of her world was her son, Roy Lee “Butch” Hill, and she also had a great love for his passion, drag racing. She worked as a sewer in a furniture factory for many years and molded Butch into the man he is today, having raised him by herself since the death of her husband. She always was willing to help others and her kind spirit will forever leave a void in the hearts of those who were privileged to know her. Mrs. Hill told everyone she knew about Butch and how he told her, “Momma, I’ll make this up to you someday” and she always reassured them, “He more than has”.

Surviving is her son, Roy Lee Hill and his wife Jan, the daughter she never had, of Randleman; granddaughter, Shawna Gerrish of High Point; great-grandson, Matthew Belaj; and her sister, Frances Smith and her husband Hanes of Knoxville, TN.

A celebration of Mrs. Hill’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Sechrest Funeral Service, 120 Trindale Road, Archdale, with Rev. John Sides officiating. Interment will follow in the Springfield Friends Meeting Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Charlie Howard Massey

MAULDIN, SC — Charlie Howard Massey, 92, of Mauldin, SC, died Tuesday at his home. Born January 7, 1921, in Hart County, Georgia, he is a son of the late Joe W. Massey and Nettie G. Chastain Massey. Mr. Massey retired from Hatteras Yacht Co. after 25 years as a cabinet maker. In High Point he attended English Road Baptist Church and Landmark Baptist Church in Mauldin, SC.

Mr. Massey is survived by two daughters, Sarah Ellenburg of Taylors, SC, and Barbara Ann Turner and husband Maynard of Williamston, SC. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Shala E. Perry, Sharon P. Dodd, Joey R. Turner, Chris L. Ellenburg and 10 great-grandchildren, Blake Kirkpatrick, Graceanna, Jenna and Olivia Ellenburg, Aaron and Samuel Dodd, Elizabeth, Joshua, Matthew and Anna Catherine Turner.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday at Floral Garden Memorial Park with the Reverend Dr. James Summey officiating. The family will greet friends following the service.

Antoinette DePalma Roselle

HIGH POINT — Mrs. Antoinette DePalma Roselle, 89, a resident of Piedmont Crossing Retirement Center and formerly of High Point, NC, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2013, in the retirement center. She was born Feb 2, 1924, in Hoboken, New Jersey, daughter of the late Antonio DePalma and Filomena Mastriolo DePalma, who preceded her in death. She was married to John Peter Roselle, who also preceded her in death. Surviving are one daughter, Kathy Grigg and husband Neal of High Point, NC; one son, Brian Roselle of Prospect, CT; three grandchildren, Amanda Grigg, Alyssa Roselle and John Roselle; and one great-grandson, Joseph Ciraolo.

There will not be formal services conducted.

John Edward Swaysland Jr.

HIGH POINT — John Edward Swaysland Jr., 87, passed away Monday, May 13, 2013, at Pennybyrn at Maryfield retirement community. He was the loving husband of the late Doris Phelps Swaysland.

Mr. Swaysland was born on March 8, 1926, in Plainfield, NJ, son of the late John Edward Sr. and Louise Virginia (Crowe) Swaysland. He was a 1950 graduate of Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA. He was a former manager at Dun & Bradstreet, NY, until his retirement.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving his country during WWII.

In his spare time, Mr. Swaysland enjoyed travel, boating, home improvement projects and helping others. He was also a car buff and a lover of dogs.

Mr. Swaysland is survived by four children, Jeffrey Swaysland of Greensboro, Janet Swaysland of Marblehead, MA, Donald Swaysland and his wife Wendy of Allentown, NJ, and Marybeth Behringer of High Point; and three grandchildren, Jennifer Swaysland of Milford, MA, Jessica Swaysland of Philadelphia, PA, and Julia Kingsley of Marblehead, MA. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanne Swaysland Randolph.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2013, at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, 1015 Eastchester Drive, High Point. A reception will follow in the Life Tribute Center of Cumby Family Funeral Service.
