HIGH POINT — Allene Lowe Ward, 85, died March 25, 2013, at Moses Cone Hospital. Arrangements are pending at Sechrest Funeral Services in High Point.
THOMASVILLE — Mr. Gus Emanuel Plakakis, Jr., 80, of Thomasville, NC, passed away on Saturday March 23, 2013, after several months of declining health. He was born on May 18, 1932, in Lumberton, NC, to the late Gus Emanuel Plakakis and Ruby Britt Plakakis.
Gus was a graduate of Lumberton High School. He received his Bachelors of Science Degree in textiles from the School of Textiles at North Carolina State University. While there, Gus was a member of the ROTC program and Pershing Rifles. He later proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.
A faithful member of First Baptist Church for 46 years, he was an ordained deacon, a member of the Elmo Allgood Sunday School class, and served on various church committees. Gus was currently attending Hope Baptist Church in Sophia.
Gus was very active in the Thomasville community, serving as a member of the Thomasville City School Board and was co-founder of the Thomasville High School Band Boosters. Gus was a 32nd Degree Mason, receiving his 50-year pin in 2012, and was also a Shriner and member of the Scottish Rite.
Gus was proud of his Greek “Cretan” heritage and was a member of the Cretan Association of the Psiloritis Carolinas Inc. Gus’s favorite pastime was spending time at the beach with his family and watching NC State Wolfpack Sports.
He was the Founder and President of Tar Heel State Chemical Company.
Gus is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sara Farmer Plakakis of the home; three daughters and three granddaughters, who were his pride and joy; his daughter Debra Plakakis Nicholson, husband Eric and their daughter, Sara Johnson Nicholson of Summerfield; his daughter Susan Plakakis Campbell and her daughter Brittney Lee Campbell and fiancé Jaron Smith of Thomasville; his daughter Anne Plakakis Manos, husband George and their daughter, Alexandra Frances Sappington of New York City.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at 11 a.m. in J.C. Green & Sons Chapel in Thomasville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home at 10 a.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent in memory of Gus to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, Fl. 33607-1460 or to the Masonic Home for Children, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565.

Martha Winn Konicki
THOMASVILLE — Martha Catherine Jordan Winn Konicki, 90, of Kernersville died Saturday. Born January 3, 1923, she is a daughter of the late Harry Winn, Sr. and Catherine Nielson Winn. She retired from a career at the Social Security Administration. Mrs. Konicki loved to paint and do ceramics. She enjoyed traveling and going out to dinner. Sweets were her passion. After her retirement Mrs. Konicki enjoyed volunteering at the hospital.
Mrs. Konicki is survived by four children, Richard Byrd and wife Carol of Archdale, Dorinda Byrd Luz and husband Andy of Edison, N.J., Michael Byrd and wife Sharon of North Plainfield, N,J., Deborah Byrd Roy and husband Richard of Kernersville; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Irene Gartner of Reseda, Calif., and a sister-in–law Marcelle Winn of Asheboro.
Funeral services for Mrs. Konicki will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale with the Reverend Stuart Noell officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Holly Hill Memorial Park, Thomasville.

Gary Thomas Griffin
THOMASVILLE — Mr. Gary Thomas Griffin, 64, a resident of 7 Bobo Drive, died Sunday, March 24, 2013, at his residence. He was born in Forsyth County, November 16, 1948, a son of Harvey Thomas Griffin and Elsie Hill Griffin and was a former resident of Kernersville before moving to Thomasville 27 years ago. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the VietNam War. He was a member of Kernersville Church of Christ and attended First Christian Church. He was a former employee of Pilot Freight Lines and Welborn Plumbing and Heating and was owner and operator of Gary Griffin Plumbing Company Inc. Gary loved to play golf and fish. On September 14, 1985, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Massey, who survives of the home. Also surviving are a daughter, Amy Simmons and husband Danny of Pleasant Garden; a son, Todd Griffin of Kernersville; two step-sons, Eric Lockhart of Archdale and Tim Lockhart of Greensboro; his parents, Harvey and Elsie Griffin of Kernersville; his brother, Tim Griffin and wife Elsie of Kernersville. Also surviving are three granddaughters, Kayla Simmons, April Simmons, and Makella Koller. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel in Thomasville by Dr. Peter L. Kunkle. Burial with military honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. and other times at the residence. Barbara Gayle Russell Yandle
THOMASVILLE — Barbara Gayle Russell Yandle, 72, passed away Sunday March 24, 2013, at Thomasville Medical Center.
Barbara was born February 15, 1941, in Davidson County to the late Hubert Lindsay and Ella Mae Stead Russell. She was employed with Thomasville Medical Center for 40 years as a dedicated registered nurse. She also worked at various doctor’s offices and nursing homes in the area.
She is survived by a daughter, Toby Lynn Pendleton and husband Gerald; grandson, Lindsay (Bubba) Pendleton and Danielle; sister, Patricia Murphy and husband David; ex-husband and great friend Hal(Toby) Yandle; numerous nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday March 27, 2013, at Thomasville Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be held at 12 p.m. Thursday March 28th in Thomasville Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop James Carter officiating.

Margaret Ruth Carter
TRINITY—Margaret Ruth (McGee) Carter, 85, passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Shannon Gray Rehabilitation and Recovery Center, Jamestown. She was the loving wife of for 46 years to the late Flavius Edward Carter who passed on October 29, 2012.
Mrs. Carter was born on March 3, 1928, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late William Fred McGee and Sallie (Burrow) McGee. She was a 1946 graduate of Trinity High School and was a former employee of Crown Hosiery for more than 21 years, and Dressmaker Fabrics for more than 10 years in sales.
She was an active member of Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting.
She was also a former member of the High Point Mineral Club for many years.
In her spare time, Mrs. Carter enjoyed reading, cooking, and had a “green thumb” for gardening. She was a wonderful, loving person who will be missed by those close to her.
Mrs. Carter is survived by a son, Clay Von Carter and his wife, Betty of Trinity; a step-daughter, Margie Queen and her husband, Phillip of Cedar Square; two brothers, James McGee and his wife, Joyce of Asheboro, and Samuel McGee and his wife, Eleanor of Julian; a sister, Mary Frances Cook and her late husband, Grady, of Trinity; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; close cousins, Pauline Hines and her husband Pat of Archdale, and Jimmy McGee and his wife Bertha of High Point; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Cynthia McGee, and a sister, Annie Wishon.

HIGH POINT — William Lee Kiser, 82, died March 24, 2013, at Westwood Health and Rehabilitation Center in Archdale. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lakeview Memorial Park Cemetery in Greensboro. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday at Pine Grove Baptist Church.
Ruth Christie Welborn
THOMASVILLE — Mrs. Ruth Christie Welborn, 84, a resident of Thomasville passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2013.
Ruth was born June 16, 1928, a daughter of the late Everett Christie and Annie Mae Bowers Christie. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a son, Michael Thomas Welborn; a sister, Doris Christie Barnett; a brother Robert Christie; and a son-law-Steven Charles Kanoy. Ruth was a lifelong resident of Thomasville, a graduate of Pilot High School (class of 1945) where she was Valedictorian. She was a member of Emanuel Reformed Church where she served on the Consistory, taught the Fellowship Sunday School Class and was a member of the Women’s Circle. She was a former employee of Prudential Insurance. Ruth was a loving Mom, Grandma, and Great-grandma and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 1947 she married Ivey Thomas Welborn, Jr. who died May 1, 1966.
Surviving are daughters, Gloria Welborn Kanoy of Chapel Hill, NC, and Annette Welborn Thornberry of Thomasville; grandchildren, Danny Eric Thornberry, Jason Michael Thornberry and Matthew Steven Kanoy; great-grandchildren, Kara Aubriee Thornberry and Keaston.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Emanuel Reformed Church with Rev. Rickey Payne and Rev. Betty Berghaus officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the burial at the church fellowship hall. J.C.
