Jack Carl Bratton
REIDSVILLE — Jack Carl Bratton, 85, of 1202 Gunn St., passed away on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at Annie Penn Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at Wilkerson Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Huff officiating. The burial will follow in Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Bratton was a native of Guilford County and the son of the late James Turner and Bea Bleeker Bratton. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Greensboro. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Huff Bratton, and granddaughter, Angela Anderson.
He is survived by his son, Michael Bratton of Deerfield, Fla.; granddaughter, Nicole Bratton; and four great- grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Doris B. Dickerson
ARCHDALE — Mrs. Doris Bunch Dickerson, 85, of 117 Northeast Drive in Archdale, N.C., passed away at High Point Regional Hospital on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014. She had been a resident of Westchester Harbor in High Point for the past 2½ years.
Mrs. Dickerson was born Aug. 28, 1928, in Winnsboro, S.C. , a daughter of Clem and Gracie Lee Bunch. She left public school after the eighth grade to help her parents take care of and provide for her three younger siblings.
On Jan. 25, 1946, she married William M. “Bill” Dickerson Jr. of Union, S.C., and the United States Navy. She had three children, a son, Michael Eugene Dickerson, a daughter, Deborah Lee Dickerson (Medlin) and a second son, David William Dickerson. Mrs. Dickerson was consumed by love for her family, giving up a very promising singing career, in order to make sure they were always taken care of. She put herself first extremely rarely, rather focusing on her husband and children. She also loved all kinds of music and dancing. She was a born-again Christian, and she has always looked forward to the time when she could meet Jesus, face to face. In the meantime, she encouraged all of her children and grandchildren to make sure they were ready to meet Jesus, too!
Mrs. Dickerson was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her son, Michael; a grandson, Martin Dickerson; two brothers and one sister. She is survived by her son, David Dickerson and wife Sandy; her daughter, Deborah Medlin and husband Rico; six grandsons, Marcus, John William, David Michael, Justin, Marc and Stephen.
She also has two granddaughters, Alexa Jade and Maya; and six great-grandchildren, Brisyn, Saylor Grace, Kaylyn Marie, Liam, Amelia and Gage Michael.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 9, at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale, N.C. An hour-long visitation will be held at 11 a.m., with the service following at noon. Afterwards, a private graveside ceremony will be held at Floral Garden Park Cemetery in High Point, N.C., where Mrs. Dickerson will be interred.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Marcus, John, David, Justin, Marc and Stephen.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
LEXINGTON — Walter Chad Everhart, 37, of Bethesda Raod, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014.

Billy Joe Grubb
THOMASVILLE — Mr. Billy Joe Grubb, 82, of Kindley Road, Thomasville, died on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, at his daughter’s residence.
He was born on June 4, 1931, in Davidson County to the late Von and Essie Black Grubb. Billy was a self-employed carpenter and was of the Baptist faith. He loved working on lawn mowers, tinkering with watches and going to Cook’s flea market. On March 25, 2013, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cleo Byerly Grubb, whom he dearly loved and missed greatly, a daughter Cynthia Grubb and a sister Barbara Hedrick.
Mr. Grubb is survived by a daughter Tuwana Grove and husband Len; a son Michael Grubb and wife Judy; a sister Phyllis Love; five grandchildren: David Grubb and wife Sue, Renee Cook and husband Adam, Sherri Deaton, Cindy Tysinger and husband Charlie, Michelle Miller and boyfriend Marshall King; and nine great-grandchildren: Owen Grubb, Olivia Grubb, Isabella Cook, Skyler Cook, McKayla Deaton, Brianna Tysinger, Dillon Tysinger, Logan King, Autumn King. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9, at Holly Hill Memorial Cemetery with pastor Billy Joe Yates officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of his son and daughter.

Dwight Wendell Herring Sr.
ARCHDALE — Dwight Wendell Herring Sr., 82, of Archdale died on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014.
Dwight was born on May 24, 1931, in Clinton, N.C., to Theodore Herring and Olive Hobson Herring. He retired from Cloverleaf Super Market after more thab 30 years of service and had served in the US Air Force. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one grandson.
Surviving are sons, Wendell Herring Jr. and wife Sandy of Archdale, Ken Ray Herring of Rockford, N.C.; and daughter Deborah Herring of Kernersville; former spouse and best friend, Frances Smith of Archdale; brothers, Ted Herring and wife Christine, Dennis Herring; sister, Joy Byrd; six grandchildren, Lindzy, Chris, Kayla, Zach, Coty and Elexis; one great-grandson, David Alston.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at the Veterans Administration Cemetery in Salisbury conducted by Dwight Herring Jr. and pastor Charles Garrett.

Cynthia Louise Henson Hollan
ARCHDALE — Mrs. Cynthia Louise Henson Hollan, 61, resident of 6548 Weant Road, Lot 3, died Jan. 6, 2014, at Hospice Home at High Point.
Mrs. Hollan was born May 1, 1952, in Mitchell County, a daughter to the late Edward Albert Henson Jr. and Betty Jean Carpenter Henson. A resident of this area most of her life, she had worked at Loflin Hosiery Mill and later at Unifi. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church and loved gardening and enjoying her pets, especially her dog Jasper.
Surviving is her daughter, Rachael Potts of Archdale; two sisters, Amelia Ashburn of Trinity and Sabra Reiman of Charlotte; a grandson, Devin Potts; numerous nieces and nephews and special friends, Ron and Cindy.
Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Faith Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Smith officiating. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Flowers may be delivered today to the church. Mary Virginia Gray Janney
THOMASVILLE — Mrs. Mary Virginia Gray Janney, 81, a resident of Thomasville, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, at Hinkle Hospice House.
Mary was born Sept. 26, 1932, in Guilford County, N.C., a daughter of the late Howard Lawson Gray and Mattie Goff Gray. She had made this area her home most of her life. In her later years she was a homemaker, but in earlier years she was a licensed practical nurse, having worked at Thomasville Medical Center and various nursing centers in the area. Mary enjoyed reading, gardening and cooking, crocheting and other crafts. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Ann Janney Reynolds. On Jan. 4, 1961, she married James William Janney, who survives of the home.
Surviving are her sons, Gary Mayton Adams and wife Pam, Howard Thomas Adams and wife Betty, all of Thomasville; her daughter, Tammy Adams Hood of Thomasville; a sister, Betty Melanson and husband Jean-Paul of Hurdle Mills, N.C. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Beth Adams, Michael Adams and wife Terrie, Elliott Adams, Quinicyanna Jones and husband W.J., Shane Adams and David Carter and wife Samantha; great-grandchildren, Ava Harris, Colin Harris, Grayson Comer, Layla Adams, William Adams, Cadence Jones and Brantley Carter; step-grandchildren, Rachel Cheek and Emma Lockhart.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Susan Mitchell officiating. Charles Leon Jordan Sr.
HIGH POINT — Mr. Charles Leon Jordan Sr., 86, of Horneytown Road went home to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at High Point Regional Hospital. Leon was born Feb. 10, 1927, in Randolph County to the late Ernest Hubert and Millie Martin Jordan. He attended Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Leon was retired from Thomas Furniture, and after retirement he worked for Quality Hardware in High Point for several years. He was an avid NASCAR fan, and in the early days of NASCAR he was involved with the Jim Paschal Racing Team. On Sept. 12, 1945, he married Dorothea “Dot” Hayworth, enjoying 61 years of marriage until her passing on Nov. 22, 2006. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; son, Charles Leon Jordan Jr.; and a brother, Harold Jordan.
Surviving are his two daughters, Terri Hunter and husband Keith of Winston-Salem and Karen Taylor and husband Roger of High Point; daughter-in-law, Sandy Jordan and husband Charles Walton of High Point; brother, Everette Jordan of High Point; six grandchildren, Tommy Wilson and wife Janine, Eric Wilson, Jeff Jordan and wife Julie, Chip Jordan and wife Brandi, Emily McKay and husband Jody and Sarah Hunter; three great-grandsons, Charlie, Parker and Hunter; lifelong friend, Bob Vaden and wife Ruth; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Hollar and the Rev. Roy Cantrell officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Leon will remain at J.C. Green Funeral Home, 10301 North N.C. 109, Winston-Salem, NC 27107 until placed in the church at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Josephine Welborn Black Loflin
THOMASVILLE — Mrs. Josephine Welborn Black Loflin, a lifelong resident of Thomasville, passed away on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at LibertyWood Nursing Center.
Mrs. Loflin was born June 25, 1927, a daughter of the late Paul Lester Welborn and Lucy Bell Welborn. She was a retired nurse from Pinewest OB/GYN.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Melvin Black; her second husband, Dolan Loflin; and her brother, Garland Ray Welborn.
Mrs. Loflin is survived by a son, David Jeffrey Black; a sister-in-law, Mabel Wagner Welborn; a niece, Cynthia Smith Milliken; and cousins, Diane Hedrick and Paul Streetman.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Jonathan Conrad officiating.

ASHEBORO — Thomas Richard McDonald Jr., 72, of Asheboro, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2014.

Howard E. McGuire
JAMESTOWN — Mr. Howard E. McGuire, 80, of Jamestown, N.C., died Dec. 3, 2013. He was born July 3, 1933, in Tarkio, Mo., and raised in Northboro, Iowa.
He graduated from Northboro High School Class of 1951 and joined the U.S. Navy. Howard served 20 years as a Navy hospital corpsman and retired at the rank of chief petty officer. His distinguished military career included assignments aboard U.S. naval ships and bases around the world — including tours of duty in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
After military service, Howard worked for Shuron Optical Company, Tampa, Fla., and retired from Southern Optical Company, Greensboro, N.C.
He was of the Protestant faith and an active member of Oakdale United Methodist Church in Jamestown, where he served in many capacities. In addition, Howard actively led Oakdale’s involvement in the Rabbit Quarter Homeless Feeding Ministry in High Point and also served at the High Point homeless shelter.
He was a former member of the Jamestown Lions Club and worked many years with the Jamestown “Yesteryear in Motion” celebration. Howard enjoyed ACC basketball, rodeo events, traveling, camping and repair work.
He is survived by Carol McGuire (his wife of 60 years) and by his four children, 12 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Howard was predeceased by his parents, a sister, a daughter, a grandson and a great-grandson. A memorial service to celebrate Howard’s life will be conducted on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. at Oakdale United Methodist Church, 532 Oakdale Road, Jamestown N.C., with the Rev. David Blankenberg, Deacon Michael Blome and the Rev. Carol Carkin, officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall after the commemorative service.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made in honor of HMC Howard E. McGuire, USN Ret., to one of the following U.S. military-affiliated organizations: Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (www.nmcrs.org) or Disabled American Veterans (www.dav.com).

James Allen Northington Sr.
THOMASVILLE — The Rev. James Allen Northington Sr., 92, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 5, 2014.
Rev. Northington, retired United Methodist minister, graduated from High Point College and completed courses of study for ordination at Duke Divinity School and Emory University.
Before entering college he owned and operated a farm in Georgia for 10 years. James found his soul mate in Mary Cobb, and they were united in marriage on Dec. 25, 1941. He then proudly served in the USCG Merchant Marines during World War II.
During his 33 years of ministry, Rev. Northington served as pastor at Hebron, Mt. Carmel and Bethel in Monroe, Moore’s Chapel in Charlotte, Rehobeth and Bethel in Greensboro, Shiloh in Lexington, Central in Denton and Coburn Memorial in Salisbury, from which he retired in 1985.
Rev. Northington, a native of Georgia, is the son of the late Wilson Comer and Mattie H. Northington. He is survived by his wife of 72 years and children, Janice N. Bozardt (Ronnie), James Allen Northington Jr. (Nina), Mary N. Beasley (Donnie), Beth N. Evans (Kevin) and Sandi N. McClanahan (David). Grandchildren are Ronnie Bozardt Jr., Allen Bozardt, Jamie Northington, Jeremy Northington, Christopher Northington, Matthew Beasley, Mark Beasley, Linley Evans, Luke Evans, Callie McClanahan and Mike McClanahan. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Other survivors are Farris Brantley Sr., husband of his beloved sister, Emily, and five nieces and nephews.
Preceding Rev. Northington in death were their beloved son, Ralph William Northington (Vicky) and a precious great- granddaughter, Sarah Bozardt.
A celebration of Rev. Northington’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church in Thomasville with Dr. Keith Carroll, Dr. Chris Fitzgerald and Matthew Beasley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends Thursday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Mrs. Mary Lee Wall Thomas, age 84 passed away Jan. 5 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Sechrest Funeral Chapel in E. Lexington Avenue by the Rev. Bobby L. Loving. Interment will follow in Oakwood Municipal Cemetery. Richard Lee Willard
JAMESTOWN — Mr. Richard Lee Willard, 54, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, in High Point Regional Hospital.
Lee was born April 1, 1959, in High Point, a son of Richard Pittman and Patsy Miller Willard and had lived in Jamestown all his life. He was in retail sales for a number of years and attended UNC-G. Lee attended West Market Street United Methodist Church, where he was very active in the music programs of the church, which included the Cherub Choir, the Chancel Choir and the Hand Bell Choir. Lee served on several committees of the church as well as being a member of the recently formed Community Hand Bell Choir named the Down Town Sounds. He was also very active in community theater in the Triad as a performer, director and stage manager.
Lee is survived by his mother, Patsy Miller Willard of the home; his father, Richard Willard, preceded him in death in 2010. Also surviving are a sister, Laura Willard Blacksten and her husband Brian of High Point; a brother David Willard of Greensboro; nieces and nephews Anna Blacksten, Natalie Willard, Cliff Willard and Andy Willard.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in West Market United Methodist Church in Greensboro with the Rev. Pat Spicer, the Rev. Fred Senter and the Rev. Pam Strader officiating. A private inurnment will be held at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church on Saturday.
