Carl R. Atwood
KERNERSVILLE — Carl R. Atwood, 91, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at the High Point Regional Hospital following a brief illness.
Carl was born in Westfield, Mass., Nov. 8, 1922, a son of Clarence and Gladys Wyman Atwood. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, attaining the rank of corporal, and he was a former member of the Shiners. Carl worked for Gilbarco for many years and retired from AMP/Tyco. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joyce Atwood; two sisters, Alice and Doris; a brother, Roy. arl was a wonderful husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Surviving are a daughter, Debbie Robertson and husband Gary of Kernersville; a sister, Ivy Ferreira and husband Bill of Florida; a brother, Kenneth Atwood and wife Vivian of Florida; three grandchildren, Chris Robertson and wife Cindy, Michelle Nelson and husband Rob, and Kim Brown; seven great-grandchildren, Courtney, Hunter, Alyssa, Lindsey, Madison, Kelby and Logan.
A celebration of Carl’s Life will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Davis Funerals and Cremations Chapel by the Rev. Mel Anderson. Entombment will follow in Floral Garden Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 1 p.m. until the service. Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice. Thomas M. Brown
RAMSEUR — Mr. Thomas M. Brown, 71, of Ramseur, N.C., died on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center following an extended illness.
Thomas was born on Jan. 26, 1942, to the late Gaither Brown and Golden Powell Brown in Randolph County. He was a 1960 graduate of William Penn High School and a retiree of High Point Furniture Company. He was a faithful and founding member of New Hope Community Fellowship.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Gaither and John Wesley; and two sons, Ronald and Donald.
Surviving relatives include a loving wife, Juanita Spinks Brown; sons, Thomas West of Delray Beach, Fla., and Timothy K. Brown of High Point; daughters, Sylvia Miller (Guy), and Crystal Brown-Williams (Leonard), all of High Point; brothers, James Phillip Brown (Willetta) of Trinity, and Alfred Brown (Regina) of Archdale; sisters, Ruth McCoy (Richard) of Archdale, Lydia Naomi Hairston (late husband, James) and Patricia Baker (Carl) of Trinity; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Trinity, 12504 Trinity Road. Burial will follow in Trinity Family Cemetery. Family visitation will be at the church 11 to 11:30 a.m. and other times at the residence. Johnson and Sons, High Point, is assisting the family. HIGH POINT — Mrs. Dorothy Sherrill Dickens, age 94, a resident of High Point, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013.
She was born May 25, 1919, in Catawba County, N.C., to the late Silas Sherrill and Era Sherrill, and had been a resident of High Point most of her life. She was employed for many years in the family Insurance business, and she retired in 1985. Dorothy was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of High Point, as long as her health permitted. She enjoyed gardening, canning, knitting and going to the beach. In addition to her parents, preceding her in death were her husband, Arthur Dickens; and her sister, Eloise Stinson.
Surviving are her son, Arthur “Dick” Dickens Jr., and his fiancée Brenda Poole of High Point.
A service to celebrate Dorothy’s life will be held Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Kenneth Broman-Fulks officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point. LEXINGTON — Kathy Jane Mallard Floyd, 60, of West Old U.S. 64, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Forsyth Medical Center.
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Reeds Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home.
Elmer David Massingale
THOMASVILLE — Mr. Elmer David Massingale, 69, a resident of Granite Falls, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013 at his home.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Goodwill Christian Church, 1748 Jim Elliott Road, Denton, NC 27239, with the Rev. Melvin Morton and the Rev. Ronnie Lyles officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the Goodwill Christian Church as well. Mable Elizabeth Whichard Newman
THOMASVILLE — Mrs. Mable Elizabeth Whichard Newman, 96, a resident of Shannon Gray Rehabilitation and Recovery Center, and formerly of Pineywood Road, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at the nursing home. She was born in Davidson County, Jan. 9, 1917, a daughter of Thomas J. Whichard and Hattie Brinkley Whichard. She was a member of West End United Methodist Church in Thomasville and had retired from Commercial Electric Company in Greensboro. On Sept. 27, 1958, she was married to R. Glen Newman, who died Aug. 11, 1987. Surviving are a sister, Mrs Ruby Hooft and her husband Jan of Durham; three brothers, Raymond A. Whichard of McAllen, Texas, Charles H. Whichard and his wife Jan of Greensboro, and Terry Joe “Butch” Whichard and his wife Wanda of Leland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Edna Lane and by brothers, William “Tommy” Whichard and James “Jimmy” Whichard. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel in Thomasville by the Rev. Myra Ward Brown. Burial will be in Calvary United Church of Christ Cemetery in Thomasville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 1 p.m. until the hour of service. THOMASVILLE — Genevieve Brinkley Spanburg, 88, of Ridglea Country Club Dive, Fort Worth, Texas, formerly of Archdale, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Odyssey Hospice Home in Texas.
Funeral will be held at noon Monday at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held 11 a.m.-noon Monday at the funeral home.
