HIGH POINT — Lucille Shelton Groce Cathey, 90, died Dec. 26, 2013 at High Point Regional Hospital. A Celebration of Life Service will held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Doris Ann Martin Perkins
HIGH POINT — Doris Ann Martin Perkins, 69 of High Point died Friday in the Hayworth Cancer Center at High Point Regional Hospital after a three year battle with cancer. Born November 22, 1944 in Robeson County she is a daughter of the late Reedy Martin and Ella Mae Beasley Martin. In addition to her parents Mrs. Perkins was preceded in death by a son Craig Watson.
Mrs. Perkins is survived by her husband Jessie Perkins of the home and two children, Mike Watson of High Point and Rick Watson and wife Tracey of Thomasville, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother Donald Martin of Maxton and two sisters, Jean Strayhorne of Laurenburg and Dorothy Moore of Burlington.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Doris Perkins will be held 2:00 pm Monday in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point. The family will greet friends following the service.

Dorothy Oaks Queen
KERNERSVILLE — Dorothy Oaks Queen, 93 of Kernersville died Thursday at Heritage Healthcare of High Point. Born September 8, 1920, in Cleveland, Ohio she is a daughter of the late Oscar Oaks and Mabel Hiatt Oaks. She spent much of her young adult life in Tennessee and the last 40 years in High Point. She was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Queens was married to Woodrow Wilson Queen, Sr. on April 15, 1938 and he preceded her in death in 1993. In addition to her husband and parents Mrs. Queen was preceded in death by a son Aaron Queen in 2010 and six brothers and three sisters.
Mrs. Queen is survived by four children, Woodrow “Woody” Wilson Queen, Jr and wife Linda of Kernersville, Jonnie Queen and wife Louise of Cohutta, GA, David Queen and wife Regina of Collegedale, TN and Ada Hixon of Mobile, AL, daughter-in-law Felicia Queen Stowman of Winston-Salem, eleven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother Leroy Oaks and wife Glenda of South Pittsburgh, TN and sister Mary Jo Bain and husband John of Ringgold, GA.
Funeral services for Mrs. Queen will be held 2:00 pm Sunday in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point with the Reverend Leroy Oaks and the Reverend Ottis Hurse officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Memorial Park. The family will greet friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Billy Sanders Jr.
HIGH POINT — Billy M. Sanders Jr., 58, passed away Dec. 25, 2013. Mr. Sanders was born Jan. 24, 1955 in High Point. A memorial service will be at There is Hope, Hwy 321, Gaston, S.C., at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28.
HIGH POINT — Jesse Sylvester Shealey, 68 departed this life on December 23, 2013 at High Point Regional Hospital. He was born March 1, 1945 in New Haven, Connecticut to the late Benjamin Shealey and Mattie Stokes Shealey. His father Benjamin and sister Linda preceded him in death.
Jesse fondly referred to as “Bo” grew up in Montclair, NJ and attended the public schools there and went to high school in Newark, NJ. He joined the US Army and served a tour of duty in Vietnam and was honorably discharged.
Growing up “Bo” loved to swim, fish and ride horses. He spent many summers working on various ranches in Verona, NJ training and caring for horses including his own horse “Patches”.
He joined Saint Paul Baptist Church in Montclair, NJ and was baptized at the early age of 11. “Bo” loved singing and sang on the church choir and later organized The Bibbs Gospel Singers under the supervision of his great aunt Nola Bibbs. Bo was lead singer in the group with his sisters Linda and Alma and performed in solo and group church events. After his tour of duty in the army Bo organized his own band and singing group and toured various areas of the United States including New England.
Left to cherish his memories are: wife, Virginia Shealey, daughter, Iris Simms; Newark, NJ; mother, Pastor Mattie Thomas (Willie) High Point, NC; sisters, Representative Alma Adams, Greensboro, NC, Jean Johnson, Newark, NJ; brothers, Benny L. Peay, Georgia, Kelvin Johnson (Gloria), West Orange, NJ.; grandchildren, Diamond, Aldray and Ramanda, Newark, NJ and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral service will be held Sunday, December 29, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel. Interment will follow at Clifton Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 3918 Abbots Creek Church Rd, Kernersville, NC. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 1:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.

ASHEBORO — Mr. John Max Small, 80, died Thursday, December 26, 2013. A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 pm Sunday, December 29, 2013, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel.

THOMASVILLE — Mindi Shawn Swaney, 32, of Thomasville, North Carolina ended her 19 year struggle with an eating disorder on December 25, 2013. Mindi was born on April 19, 1981 to Roger Steven Swaney and Kathy Brinkley Swaney. Mindi was a 2006 honor graduate of High Point University with a degree in psychology. She had a passion for books, music, people and coffee, not necessarily in that order. For the past several years, she has been partners with her dad at Monkeez Brew Coffee Shop. With her contagious smile and love for people, she would not just make your coffee, but make your day!
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Boyd (Jack) and Donnie Swaney.
Surviving are her parents, Steve and Kathy Swaney of Thomasville; brother, Monty Steven Swaney of New York; maternal grandparents, G. Clifton and Marion Brinkley of Thomasville; uncle, Eddie Brinkley and wife Gloria of Thomasville; cousins, Chad Brinkley and wife Laura and Beth Rollins and husband Matt, including their children, Jackson, Sawyer, and Dawson Brinkley as well as Levi, Asher, and Maggie Rollins, all of Thomasville. Mindi leaves behind her beloved Monkeez Brew family and many other friends and family.
A Celebration of Life Service for Mindi will be held at Rich Fork Baptist Church on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at 2:00 pm officiated by the Reverend Michael Bowers with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Per Mindi’s wishes, the family will be accepting friends and family for coffee in the vestibule of the church following the interment. Mindi will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville until taken to the church one hour prior to the service.

THOMASVILLE — Mr. Robert Daniel “Dan” Wingard, 66, died Monday, December 23, 2013 at Louisville Baptist East Hospital in Louisville, KY. He was born in Guilford County, December 11, 1947, son of Robert C. Wingard and Mary Evelyn Young Wingard and had been a resident of this area most of his life. He was a US Army veteran and was a member of the American Legion Post 41 in Thomasville and an honorary member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Dan was a trucker by trade and was currently employed with Superior Carriers. He was a licensed pilot, loved aviation and also loved photography and documenting life. Dan was a man of faith and a proud grandfather who loved his family. He enjoyed all that life had to offer and loved a good joke. Surviving is a daughter, Kate Wingard of Vail, CO; a son, Robert Daniel “Bobby” Wingard, Jr. and his wife Hayley of Greensboro; a grandson, Bryson Daniel Wingard; a sister, Debby Brown and her husband David of High Point; and a nephew Andrew Brown of Tempe, AZ. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 AM at J. C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery in High Point.
