DENTON — Mrs. Almada Hopkins Harris, 88, of Mountain Vista Health Park and formerly of New Hope Road, Denton, died June 6, at the Health Park. Funeral will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Liberty Fellowship Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Anita Laurenitzen Kryger

HIGH POINT — Aagnete “Anita” Laurenitzen Kryger, 92, of High Point died Friday May 31, 2013, at the Hospice Home at High Point. Born April 1, 1921, in Copenhagen, Denmark, she is a daughter of the late Alfred Laurenitzen and Agnes Jensen Laurenitzen. She moved to the United States in 1956 with her husband Werner. She will be remembered as a great hat maker and seamstress and a very kind and loving lady.

Mrs. Kryger is survived by two children, Tom Kryger and wife Stephanie of Lexington and Liala DiMartini and husband Dick of Lake Oswego, Oregon, and three grandchildren, Kristine Kryger, Kimberly Kryger and Thomas Kryger.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Anita’s life will be held Sunday June 9 at 4:00 p.m. in the Life Tribute Center of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.

Byvion Franklin “Frank” Laughlin 

THOMASVILLE — Mr. Byvion Franklin “Frank” Laughlin, 60, a resident of 3101 Harvest Drive, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at his residence. He was born November 14, 1952, in Randolph County, a son of Bill Laughlin and Annie Marie Pugh Laughlin. Frank was a devoted husband, father, brother and a man that always cared for others. He lived his whole life by putting others first. He touched so many lives and would never take credit for all the good things he did for so many strangers. Most importantly he was a family man that even through the pain and suffering would make sure his wife, daughters, and grandkids were taken care of.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Jean Grant Laughlin of the home; daughters, Cindy McIntire and husband Paul and Mindy Norris and fiancé Josh Gore, both of Thomasville; sisters, Teresa Wright and husband Ronnie of Sophia and Tena Allen and fiancé Doug Nixon of Franklinville; grandchildren, Ryan McIntire, Austin McIntire, Kaitlynn Norris and Briannna Norris. He was preceded in death by his father, Bill Laughlin; his mother, Anna Marie Wensil; his step-father, Charles Wensil; and brothers, Randy Laughlin and Michael Laughlin.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 7, 2013, at 1 p.m. in J.C. Green & Sons Chapel with Rev. Ottis Collins officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and other times at the home.

LEXINGTON — Daniel Contreras Pena, 58, of Jordan Lane, Lexington, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at Forsyth Medical Center.

Funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2013, at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Davidson Funeral Home is serving the family.

 

Harold Wesley Ritch

HIGH POINT — Mr. Harold Wesley Ritch, 87, passed away on June 5, 2013, at Westchester Manor.

Mr. Ritch was born September 18, 1925, in Greensboro, NC, a son of the late James G. and Gerdie Haynes Ritch. He was a graduate of High Point High School and High Point College, now High Point University. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served on the LSMR 191 in the Pacific and remained active in their reunions held around the nation. He retired from Piedmont Veneer and Ritch Face Veneer and loved anything pertaining to wood. A master in woodworking, he shared his pieces of art with his many friends and family. He was truly a family man who loved God first, then family, then Emerywood Baptist Church and the Roger Bells Men’s Sunday School Class. A lover of the ocean, he belonged to the Sea Scouts as a youngster and later joined the Navy. He spent a lot of time sailing his boat at the coast and playing golf in later years. In 1948 he married the former Patricia (Pat) Pierce, who survives of the residence. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Harold Jeffrey Ritch and a brother, Alvin Ritch.

Surviving are a son, James Patric Ritch; his granddaughter, Hannah Ritch, whom he referred to as “his sunshine”; three sisters, Joyce Esliones, Mildred Jenkins and Helen Vaughan and husband B.E.; two brothers, J.G. Ritch Jr. and wife Bobbie and J. Michael Ritch; and several beloved nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Emerywood Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Glen Adkins officiating. Visitation will immediately follow the service in the gathering area of the church. Members of his Sunday school class are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Dr. High Point, NC 27262, or to Emerywood Baptist Church, 1300 Country Club Dr. High Point, NC 27262. Sherwin Michael Spencer

GREENSBORO — Sherwin Michael Spencer, 42, passed away suddenly Wednesday, June 5, 2013.

A graveside service conducted by the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Howell will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Guilford Memorial Park.

Michael was a native of High Point, North Carolina. He had been in declining health for several years. He loved fishing, NASCAR, and everything UNC. He collected NASCAR memorabilia especially anything Dale Earnhardt. He always wore a T-shirt and a cap promoting the season’s appropriate interest.

Michael is survived by his loving companion of many years, Lynn O’Ferrell. Lynn was his constant love and for the last few years, his caregiver 24 hours a day. Michael was grateful for the love and support of Lynn, the O’Ferrell family and his children.

Michael is survived by his parents, Sherman and Rebecca Spencer of Thomasville, North Carolina, and his brothers, Chris and wife Vicky of Thomasville, and Dion Spencer.

Surviving are children Alicia Spencer Ortiz and husband Angel, their children, Jayden and Joel of Gibsonville, Emily Spencer of Madison, her daughter Alaina, and Brandon Spencer of Gibsonville. Michael was blessed with these three beautiful grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Forbis and Dick Funeral Home, North Elm Street, Friday, June 7, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in honor of Michael to Lawndale Baptist Church, 3505 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro, NC, 27408.

Betty L. Tate

HURON, OH — Betty L. Tate, 77, of Huron, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at her residence.

She was born September 18, 1935, and has been a resident of Huron for the past eight-and-a-half years, coming from Denton, NC. She enjoyed quilting and all type of crafts and loved her walks on the beach.

She is survived by her husband, Doug, married to for 58 years; a daughter, Gayle Tate of Huron; a son, Jeff Tate of Grove City, OH; and her favorite family dog, Zoe.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Baxter and Florence (Cannon) Wood; and two brothers.

At Betty’s request, there will be no visitation or services.

The family wishes to thank everyone from Firelands Home Health Care and Stein Hospice for their compassionate care and friendship they provided and a special thank you to Jodi and all of Betty’s neighbors close by.

THOMASVILLE — Dorothy Ann Tollison, 63, passed away Monday June 3, 2013, at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington.

Dorothy was born January 3, 1950, in Lee County to the late Claude and Pearline Gainey Blackmon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Tollison; brothers, Tiney Blackmon, Jack Blackmon, Floyd Blackmon, Harold Blackmon and Carl Blackmon; parents.

Dorothy is survived by sons, Dickie Tollison and wife Robin, Jerry Tollison and wife Jenny, Anthony Tollison and wife April; daughters, Tammy Blackburn and husband Coy, Wendy Faulkner and husband Scott; brothers, Wayne Blackmon and Billy Blackmon; sisters, Grace Blackmon and Hazel Campbell; 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday June 6, 2013, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Thomasville Funeral Home. A 2:00 p.m. funeral service will be held Friday June 7 in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jim Honeycutt officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Garden Memorial Park in High Point.
