Lewis F. Allen
COLFAX — Lewis F. Allen, 98, died on Friday, May 9, 2014 at Colfax, NC. At his side was his wife of 72 years, Carol P. Allen.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014 at River Landing, 1575 John Knox Drive, Colfax, NC 27235.
A true gentleman throughout his life, Lewis set a very high standard of devotion to his family and friends, and, was loved by all who knew him. He held a strong faith and adhered to the highest ideals of integrity, respect and dignity. He was an extraordinary and wonderful person who will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his beloved wife Carol; a sister, Barbara Rosencrans; two sons, David Allen and his wife Ann and Douglas Allen and his wife Bonnie. His grandchildren are Mark Allen and his wife Kristin, Melissa Pessolano and her husband Jim, Ryan Allen, Tricia Allen, Ross Allen, Brittany Leidinger and her husband Josh, and step-grandchildren Brian Fogarty and his wife Bonnie and Daniel Fogarty. His nephews are Alan and Andrew Rosencrans.
His great-grandchildren are Chelsey, Casey, Matthew, Maxwell, Kaitlin and Kaylee Allen; Courtney and Jordan Pessolano; Amara, Charlize and Jameson Stevens; Winona Leidinger; Ethan and Magnolia Fogarty.

CHARLOTTE — Frances Pickett Blickenstaff, 81, of Charlotte passed away May 18, 2014, at her home.
She was born on November 6, 1932, in High Point, NC to the late John and Pearl Pickett. She attended St. Mary's School in Raleigh, NC and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
After college, she married Gilbert Furgurson of High Point and moved to New York, where she had three children. During this time, Frances was an active member of the Junior League of New York and passionate about the League's mission to support the public school libraries.
In the mid-1960s, she moved with her children to Westport, CT, where she married Wayne K. Blickenstaff and they had a child together. Frances raised her four children in Westport, where she lived for over 20 years and worked as a research analyst for a national market research firm. She and Wayne moved to Charlotte in 1989.
Frances was an avid reader and loved all types of music and Broadway shows. She was an animal lover and supporter, as demonstrated by the number and types of pets she has had over the years, as well as her financial donations to various animal protection agencies.
Later in life, Frances was happiest spending time with her family at her summer home off the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC. Her last act of generosity was donating her land to the Blue Ridge Conservancy to make sure it was protected in perpetuity.
In addition to her parents, Frances was preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years, Wayne K. Blickenstaff.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory a son, Gilbert Harris Furgurson Jr. of Charleston, S.C.; daughters, Brenda Furgurson Grimes, Gayle Furgurson Wellborn and husband Bart and Jane Perry Blickenstaff, all of Charlotte; brother, John Pickett (Jack) and wife Becky of High Point, NC; six grandchildren, Kelley, Becky, Steven, Justin, Megan and Harris; four great-grandchildren; and her dog Bailey and cat Casey.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
ROANOKE RAPIDS — Joe Vance Overcash 69, of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday May 17, 2014. The funeral service was held Tuesday May 20, in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.
LEXINGTON — James Erastus Sowers, 89, died Monday, May 19, 2014 in Hinkle Hospice House.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at Holloways Baptist Church. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery. The family will see friends at Holloways Baptist Church from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Davidson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
TRINITY – Dennis M. Steed, 83, died Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at GrayBrier Nursing and Retirement Center.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time at Phillips Funeral Service, Inc., High Point.
Mrs. Alberta (Mercer) Walters
HIGH POINT- Mrs. Alberta (Mercer) Walters, 87, passed away Friday, May 16, 2014 at WhiteStone Senior Living, Greensboro. She was the loving wife of the late Henry Walters.
Mrs. Walters was born on November 24, 1926 in Wilson, NC the daughter of the late Albert and Lelia Mercer. She was a University of North Carolina graduate earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics, and went on to teach algebra in Guilford County middle schools for many years until her retirement.
In her spare time she enjoyed playing bridge weekly at the recreation center with her friends and passing time by reading. In her younger years, she and her husband enjoyed traveling together.
Mrs. Walters is survived by a daughter, Patricia Thornhill and her husband Brock of Chapel Hill; a son, Grant Walters and his wife Elizabeth of Greensboro; three grandchildren, Alex Walters, Jeremy Thornhill and his wife Annie, and Talmage Carrillo and her husband Erick; one great-granddaughter, Amelia Thornhill; and a special Siamese cat, Tar Heel.
All services will be private at the request of the family.
