Everett Franklin Brown
THOMASVILLE — Everett Franklin Brown, 57 of Thomasville died Saturday at the Hospice Home at High Point. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale.
HIGH POINT – Mr. Richard Earl Cade, 78, died Wednesday, May 14th at his residence. Funeral plans are pending at Sechrest Funeral Service in High Point.
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Lillian Moser Canada, 93, of Burlington, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2014 at White Oak Manor.
A native of Alamance County, Mrs. Canada was the wife of the late Irvin H. Canada and the daughter of the late Tom S. Moser and the late Sophie Alexander Moser.
Mrs. Canada retired from Roses Department Store as a sales associate. She was a member of Davis Street United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her son, Larry Canada and his wife, Linda, of Burlington; two grandsons, Lee Canada and his wife, Michelle, of Greensboro and Chris Canada of Burlington and two great-grandchildren, Bryce Canada and Kaylin Canada.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Canada was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Canada; a sister, Ollie Belle Allen and a brother, Jimmy Moser.
A funeral service will be held Monday, May 19, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington. Officiating will be the Rev. Ellen McCubbin. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, from 12:45 to 1:45 pm at the funeral home.

HIGH POINT — Ms. Deborah Diane “Big Red” Dowdy, 53, was born in High Point, NC on January 14, 1961 to the late Reatha Mae Dowdy and Calvin Pearson. After years of struggling with her health, she was called home on May 15, 2014. She was preceded in death by her beloved grandmother, Minnie Mae Harrington; great aunt, Flossie Morgan; uncle, Melvin Harrington; sister, Ardelia Dowdy; brother, Ronnie Dowdy; niece, Refferia Dowdy and half-sister, Patricia York.
Big Red leaves to cherish her memory, two children, Derrick and Katrina Dowdy of High Point, NC; one very special grand-daughter, Kayla Dowdy; two brothers, Darrell Dowdy of Durham, NC and Rickey (Sharon) Dowdy of High Point, NC; one sister, Amy Breeden l of High Point, NC; one dear aunt, Ida Robinson of New York; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, other close family and friends.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 1710 E. Green Dr. Interment will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park, High Point, NC. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 p.m. until 1:00 p.m.

DENTON — Mrs. Faydene Hill Garner age 81, formerly of E. Third St., Denton died Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Mountain Vista Health Park in Denton.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, May 19, at Briggs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel.

GREENSBORO — Mr. Billy R. Key, 68, of 3632 Southeast School Rd. died Friday, May 16, 2014 in the loving home of his niece and her husband, Diane and Ed Isley. He was born Friday, July 20, 1945 in Guilford County.
Billy was a member of Pleasant Garden Baptist Church. He was in the 191st Infantry of the United States Army receiving a Purple Heart and Bronze Star during his time of service. Billy worked for the United States Post Office for 20 years (retired in 1992), where he was known as the Pleasant Garden Santa Claus. He was a gardening and fishing enthusiast. Billy will be remembered for his sense of humor and his humble, loving nature.
He is survived by his son, William R. Key (Anne) of Greenville, SC; daughter, Julie K. Goguen (Matt) of Columbia, SC; grand-daughters, Lyndi M. Goguen and Maelyn E. Goguen of Columbia, SC; sisters, Mary Beth Boggs of High Point, NC, Louise Heeden of Greensboro, NC and Ann McCain of McCleansville, NC. Billy was preceded in death by brothers, William C. Key, Jack Key and Melvin Key as well as sisters, Ruby Blakey, Shelby McFalls and Ruth Forest.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, May 21 at Pleasant Garden Baptist Church with Michael Barrett officiating. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall.

DENTON — Mr. Ja Van McDowell, age 84 of Floyd Street, died Thursday, May 15 at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday at Briggs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Burial with Military honors will be held at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.
The family will see friends from 1:00 to 2:30 PM Sunday at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton and other times will be at the residence on Floyd Street.

THOMASVILLE — Mrs. Leople Hege Parrish, 88, a resident of 124 Castleton Drive, went to be with her Lord, Friday, May 16, 2014 at her residence. She was born in Davidson County, March 25, 1926 a daughter of Mamie Garland Hege and Clemmie Berrier Hege and was a lifelong resident of Davidson County. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church. She was a former employee of Thomasville Furniture Industries and National Insurance & Real Estate. On August 6, 1950 she was married to William Bruce Parrish who died September 5, 2009. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Versie Hege, Carrie Mae Lambeth, and Beulah Childress, and by brothers, Harvey Hege and Olin Hege. Surviving are two daughters, Cheryle Parrish and Donna Orman, both of Thomasville; two sisters, Rebecca Hotle of Indianapolis, IN and Margaret Wood of High Point; two grandsons, Zachary Orman and his wife Caroline of New Bern and Jonathan Orman and his wife Emily of Thomasville; four great-grandchildren, Brinley Orman, Will Orman, Catherine Orman, and Kennedy Orman. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 19, 2014 at 11 AM at Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church by Dr. E. Keith Carroll and the Rev. Leon Thompson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until the hour of service. The family will be at the funeral home Sunday from 6 until 8 PM and other times at the residence. Archie L. Smith
ASHEBORO — Archie Leak Smith, age 97, died May 16, 2014 at Clapp’s Convalescent Nursing Home, Asheboro.
Mr. Smith was born July 17, 1916 in Maxton, North Carolina, son of the late Thomas Leak Smith and Mamie McCallum Smith. He was a graduate of Presbyterian Junior College in Maxton, North Carolina; Wake Forest College, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order and Wake Forest School of Law, where he served as Vice President. After law school, he moved to Raleigh where he worked as a Probation Officer. In 1942 he began his career in the U. S. Navy, attending Midshipman’s Schools at Notre Dame University and Columbia University in New York City. He served as an Assistant Gunnery Officer and Damage Control Officer on the USS Sims, a Destroyer Escort, in both the Atlantic and the Pacific, and was the recipient of the Silver Star Medal. After 32 years in the US Naval Reserves, he retired with the rank of Captain.
He practiced law from 1945-1982 in Asheboro, where he also served as City Attorney. He was a member of the North Carolina Bar Association. He served on many local boards in Asheboro including Director and President of Randolph Hospital, President of Asheboro Rotary Club, Director and Chairman of the Board of Wachovia Bank, and Commander of American Legion Post 45. Mr. Smith was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and an Elder. He was a loyal member of the Wake Forest University Deacon Club, attending football and basketball games until he was 96 years old.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death in 1986 by his first wife of 44 years, Eleanor Mayes Smith; his sister Mary McCallum Smith of Maxton; and brother, Thomas Lynwood Smith, of High Point. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Dorothy Henry Smith; his son, Archie L. Smith, Jr. and wife, Linda of Asheboro; daughter, Mary Brent Wright and husband, Bob of Raleigh; and son, Keith Mayes Smith and wife, LuAnn of Washington, NC.; six grandchildren, Michael Smith and wife, Jennifer and Scott Smith and wife, Megan of Asheboro; Brent Wright and wife, Wendy and Rob Wright and wife, Parker of Raleigh; Sara Beth Belton and husband Joey of Manteo, Ainsley Tayloe and husband, Thomas of Beaufort, SC; 11 great grandchildren; step-children, Les Henry and wife, Janet and their family of Asheboro; Terre Henry of Wilmington; and Doug Henry and his family of Farmville, NC.
A Memorial service will be held on Monday, May 19, 2014 at 2:00 P. M. at First Presbyterian Church, 420 Walker Avenue, Asheboro with Pastor Brian Gauff, Pastor Connie Weaver and Rev. Art Ross officiating. A visitation with the family will follow the service.
