GREENSBORO — Anita Heusser Atwood, 92, died Thursday. June 5, 2014.

HIGH POINT — Mr. Fred Allen Burke, Sr., 73, passed away on Monday June, 2, 2014 at Kindred Hospital. He was born on December 12, 1940 in High Point, NC to the late Henry Burke and Grace Maddox Burke. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Geraldine Quick and one brother, Henry Burke, Jr.
Fred attended Guilford County Schools and served in the U.S. Army. He was employed at the Greensboro Bulk Mail Center until he retired.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice Burke of the home, five children, Angela Burke, Fred Burke, Jr., Preston Burke, Rashad Burke and Benicia Burke all of High Point, NC; three sisters, Wanda Lindsay of High Point, NC; Shirley (Roscoe) Brunson of Lakewood, NJ and Louise Gray of Atlanta, GA; three brothers, Paul Burke and Jerry (Yolanda) Burke both of High Point, NC; Lonnie (Eleanor) Burke of Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 2:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.

COLFAX — Carole Fitzgerald Carter, 70, died Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.
LEXINGTON — Thelma Joyce Elliott, age 51, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at the Hospice Home of High Point.
She was born on December 12, 1962 in Guilford County. She is the daughter of Lorie Cole and the late Clyde Elliott. She resided in Lexington.
She attended Trinity schools. Her most meaningful achievement in life was raising her beautiful daughter, Samantha Elliott of Trinity, who lovingly took care of her mother until the end.
Joyce loved country music, cats, and loved to laugh and cut up.
Surviving in addition to her mother and her daughter Samantha, are a brother Auby Elliott; four sisters, Sherrie Billings, Lorie Rabon and husband Chris, Edith Grimmett, and Robin Mesimer. She also is survived by nephew Christopher Rabon and wife Linda; four nieces, Kellee Rabon, Ashley Billings, Molly Grimmett and Summer Whitley; great-niece Madison Spears and great-nephew Kaden Rabon.
She was preceded in death by a dear sister, Rushie Ann Slusher.
Family and friends will gather 4-6 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at the home of Lorie Rabon, 6811 Country Meadows Lane, Trinity.
A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday, June 9, at The Potter House, 4943 Jordan Valley Road, Trinity.
The family would like to express gratitude for the loving care that was given at Hospice in High Point.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont.
ASHEBORO — Billy James Hill, 42, died Tuesday, June 3, 2014, the result of an automobile accident.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at Summerville Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the First Baptist Church Cemetery in Denton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 6, at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton.

TRINITY — Mrs. Bernice Absher Jolly, formerly of Elkin, passed away, Wednesday, June 04, 2014.
Mrs. Jolly was born on July 24, 1924 in Wilkes County to Curtis Jackson Absher and Ether Byrd Absher.
After graduating from Ronda High School, she went to work in the courthouse in Wilkesboro during WWII and then worked for Chatham Manufacturing Co. where she remained a loyal employee for 44 years. On June 20, 1942 she married Marcus “Bud” Jolly. Mrs. Jolly was a member of Charity United Methodist Church. Her greatest legacy was the love she had for her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marcus “Bud” Jolly.
Left to cherish memories are daughter, Patricia “Pete” Jolly of Archdale; sister, Bonnie Brown of Jonesville; special nieces & nephews, Mike and Teresa Gillespie, Chris and Vicky Brown, Harry Gillespie, Lynn Brown, Becky and Ed Stepps, Don Gillespie, Cindy Cassells, their children, grandchildren, great nieces and nephews and great-great nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, June 8, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Charity United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 at Elkin Funeral Service.

HIGH POINT — Rev. Samuel McLendon Sr., 74, of High Point, NC, departed this life at his residence on May 31, 2014, as he made his transition to the kingdom of heaven. He was born on April 12, 1940 in Lilesville, NC to the late Amos and Bessie Parsons McLendon.
Samuel attended Henry Grove High School in Lilesville, NC after which he established himself in High Point, NC in 1959. He was united in holy matrimony on May 8, 1960 to the former Ophelia D. Crawford and to this union six children were born Curtis, Samuel Jr., Kevin, Donna Lynn (deceased), Pamela, and Christopher.
In June of 1977, he answered the call to become the pastor of Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church in Thomasville, NC, where his vision and objective was winning souls to Christ and helping the less fortunate. After his tenure at Emmanuel, he became the pastor and founder of Renewed Faith Baptist, Thomasville, NC.
Rev. McLendon was a Board Member of the General Baptist State Convention, Past Moderator, Vice Moderator, and Past Secretary of the Rising Star Missionary Baptist Association, Member of Ministers United for Christ, and a Freemason of the Toussaint L’Overture Lodge No. 524.
He leaves a legacy of love and devotion to his wife, Ophelia; sons, Curtis (Evern) Harris, Samuel (Donna) McLendon, Jr., Kevin (Daphne) McLendon and Christopher McLendon; daughter, Pamela (Previn) Taylor; god daughter, Alicia Williams; fifteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two god-children, brother, James (Leanna) McLendon; sisters, Eliza Porter, Veronica McLendon, Mary Jane Sawyer, Joyce Ann Brunson; in-laws, John and Janie C. “Mother Dear” Harris; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, neighbors, and friends.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Williams Memorial C.M.E. Church, 3400 Triangle Lake Rd. Interment will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens, Jamestown, NC. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
