Nina Cochran

GRANITE QUARRY, NC — Mrs. Nina Mae Passmore Cochran, 74, of Granite Quarry, formerly of Thomasville and Newport News, VA, passed away Monday, June 2, 2014 at Carolina’s Medical Center Northeast in Concord.

Mrs. Cochran was born on May 15, 1940 in Brevard, NC to Roy and Martha Wilson Passmore. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton, VA. She especially enjoyed shopping and was a true “QVC Queen.” She also enjoyed crafts, crocheting, and most of all, spoiling her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Jerry Lowder, Sr. and Tommie Cochran; and siblings, Grover, Fred, and Claude Passmore, and Louise Richardson.

Surviving are her first husband and caretaker, with whom she reconnected, Bill Sentell of Granite Quarry; sons, Donnie Sentell and his wife Georgette of Granite Falls, NC and Jerry Lowder, Jr. of Hampton, VA; daughters, Drema Moore and her husband Lynn of Yorktown, VA, and Christy Cooksey and her husband Randy of Aylett, VA; grandchildren, JoeDon Sentell, Crystal Sentell, Lucas Sentell, Jonathan Moore, Amanda Triplett, Jeffrey Moore, Amber Moore, Jared Moore, Daniel Lowder, Cameron Cooksey, Cody Cooksey, and Cole Cooksey; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are siblings, R.L. Passmore of Andrews, NC, Robert Passmore of Thomasville, NC, and Rosie Bingham of Crescent City, CA; and her beloved dog and companion, Misty.

Funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at New Heights Baptist Church, 5082 Meadowbrook Drive, Trinity, NC with Rev. Roger Porter officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 p.m. Thursday at the church. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Hampton Memorial Gardens in Hampton, VA.

Augustus Curtis

LINWOOD — Augustus Elwood Curtis, Jr., 92,  died Monday, June 2, 2014.

The funeral service will be held at 4 pm. Thursday, June 5, at Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel, Lexington.


Virginia James

THOMASVILLE — Virginia Dunlap James died peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2014 at Piedmont Crossing Retirement Center in Thomasville, NC.

She was born on October 9, 1922, in Wadesboro, NC, the daughter of Evelyn and Preston Dunlap.  She married Alexander L. James on January 20th, 1945 in Tampa, FL.  He preceded her in death on November 14, 2001.

She graduated from Wadesboro High School and attended Woman’s College (now UNCG) in Greensboro, NC.  A resident of Thomasville since 1968, Mrs. James was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed her work there in a variety of volunteer positions.  After her children were grown, she began a new career in the furniture industry, continuing to work into her 80s.

Mrs. James is survived by her daughter, Anne James Vandekatsey and husband Rene Vandekatsey of Naples, FL; her son, Alexander L. James, Jr and wife  Elizabeth Wright James of Greensboro; and  grandchildren, Matthew Morris James and William Marshall James.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Thomasville on Saturday June 7, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Michael E. Lamm officiating.

Dr. Harold Jarrell

COLFAX —  Dr. Harold Thomas Jarrell, 90, resident of Colfax, died June 3, 2014 at River Landing at Sandy Ridge. 

The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at High Point Friends Meeting.  Visitation will be from 7  to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.


Stanley  Kinney

SUMMERFIELD — Stanley Walter Kinney, 71,  formerly of High Point, died Tuesday at his home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point. 


Rachel McKay 

HIGH POINT — Rachel McKay, 82, born on May 15, 1932, was the second child and the eldest daughter of Harris and Nancy McIntyre. Rachel was born in Scotland County and attended the public schools of Scotland County, North Carolina.

She was a 1950 graduate of Laurinburg Institute High School. Rachel married Virgil McKay on December 24, 1956 and they became each other’s Christmas gifts for 57 years. Virgil gave her a life of excitement and laughter that she cherished for the rest of her life.

Although her parents, Harris and Nancy McIntyre and her brother, Julius McIntyre (Naomi) preceded her in death, her legacy never vanished.

Her loving memories are honored and cherished by her husband, Mr. Virgil McKay of the home; son, Marlon McKay (Karen) of  Norfolk, Virginia; beloved sister, Hattie Duff (Lawrence); brother, Lee Ronza McIntyre; brother-in-law, J. Stancil Harrington and sister-in-law, Lois W. Harrington; grandchildren, Quinton, Kiara, Andrew and Caleb; five great-grandchildren; nieces, Hattie Cockrell, Vivian LeGrande, Kathi Harrington-Gibson and Sheila Graham; nephews, Julius McIntyre, Clifford Harrington and Brooksie Harrington; great nieces and many other extended family members and friends who served to make Rachel’s life fulfilling and joyful.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. at First Emmanuel Baptist Church, 831 Leonard Ave. Interment will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens, Jamestown, NC. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
