James Starling Brown
HIGH POINT - Mr. James Starling Brown, age 70, resident of Baltimore, Maryland passed away on February 11, 2014. Jim was born in High Point, North Carolina on June 16, 1943, son to Odell and Mary Francis Brown. He graduated from John Hopkins University and was an IT executive with several fortune 500 companies. Jim was preceded in death by both his parents and his brother, Ronald Brown. Surviving is his loving partner of thirty years, David M. Donovan, Ph.D., of Baltimore, Maryland. In addition, he is survived by daughter Janet Brown of Napa, CA, brother, Kenneth Brown of High Point, sister, Kathy Brown of Thomasville and several loving nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held on Friday, February 14, 2014. Please contact family members for time and location. LEXINGTON - Shirley Briggs Flowers, age 73, of Lexington passed away Sunday afternoon. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Forest Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum.
HIGH POINT - Mr. Walter Johnson Mitchell, 88, died peacefully on February 10 at Westchester Manor. Mr. Mitchell was born November 29, 1925, the son of Ernest and Nora Johnson Mitchell. A resident of High Point all his life, he was a graduate of Allen Jay High School. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in World War II as a submarine technician for two years. Returning to High Point, he owned and operated Mitchell Septic Tank Service, later Mitchell Backhoe Service, retiring at the age of 73, from the career he loved. Walter was a lifetime member of Fairfield United Methodist Church, serving the church in many capacities. He was instrumental in overseeing construction of several of the buildings, was treasurer of the building fund for many years, and was a member of the District Conference.
On December 24, 1947, he married the love of his life, Blanchette Lassiter Mitchell. Together they raised two children. They recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary, a marriage of total dedication and love. His two grandsons were his pride and joy. His happiest days were when all of the family was together. Walter especially enjoyed cars and motor sports. He shared that passion with his son, Ray, with whom he enjoyed attending many racing events and car shows nationwide. He was known for his ready smile and pleasant personality. He always had a kind word for anyone he met. In addition to his wife, surviving are a daughter, Sandra Mitchell East of High Point, son Walter Ray Mitchell and wife Mary of Austin, Texas, grandsons; Timothy Ray Mitchell and Jeffrey North Mitchell and countless nieces and nephews who loved and cared for their “Uncle Walter”.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters; Consula Mitchell Kearns and Frances Mitchell Houser, and a brother, Colonel Mack Mitchell. A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday , February 13 in the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service on Eastchester Dr. with the Rev. Jill Auman and Providence Place Chaplain, Kim Madrey officiating. The Family will receive friends following the service. Private interment will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The family would like to thank the many loving caretakers at Providence Place and Westchester Manor who assisted Walter and his family in his final year. HAGERSTOWN, MD. - Mrs. Mary Gertrude Asbury 71, formerly of Newark Delaware, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2014. She was born on December 25, 1942. She was the daughter of Llyod Granville Mull and Ethel Viola Barnhart. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister Evelyn Rosalie Mull (Gilbert). She was raised in Hagerstown, MD. She was employed with the University of Delaware for 25 years. She is survived by her sister Ethel K. Schricker, a daughter Claudia Greenwood and her husband Brian, and one son Dean Asbury and his wife Suzanne. She had 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. A celebration of life service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at Mitchell’s Grove United Methodist Church by the Reverend Tim Porter. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m. prior to the service.
THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Doris “Dorsey” Baldwin Bates, 83, a resident of Thomasville, died Monday evening, February 10, 2014 at the Hospice Home at High Point. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home.
HIGH POINT - Faye Alease Jacobs Johnson, 89, passed away peacefully at Heritage Healthcare in High Point. A celebration of life service will be 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2014 at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, 206 Trindale Road with Rev. Amos Mashburn officiating. A visitation will be held from 1- 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be held at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery, Orlando, Florida.

TRINITY - Paula Renee Anders, 39, a resident of Trinity passed away Sunday, February 9, 2014. She was born June 7, 1974 in High Point to John W. Anders and Wanda Rich Anders and had been a resident of this area all her life. Paula graduated from Trinity High School in 1992 and from Randolph County Community College in 1996, with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. She was currently employed as an RN with Hospice of The Piedmont; working there since 2009. Paula enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her children and going to their ball games. She also enjoyed time with her friends.
Paula was a loving and caring person with a heart as big as a mountain. She touched many lives in a positive way. Her family and friends love her dearly and will miss her always. A shining light has grown dim, but she will always be in our hearts. We love you baby: “Go Rest High on That Mountain”. She was preceded in death by her father; John W. Anders and by her paternal grandmother; Emma Anders. She is survived by her companion; Curtis Eanes of the home, her children; Avery Dalton Eanes and Jacob Lee Eanes of the home, her mother of Trinity, her brother; John C. Anders and his wife Pam of Trinity, her maternal grandparents; Joe and Edna Rich of Trinity. Also surviving are her nephews; John W. Anders and Joseph Anders both of Trinity.
A service to celebrate Paula’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 14, 2014 in the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale. Chaplain Craig Walker will officiate. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home and other times will be at the home of her mother. The family would like to say a special thanks to the Doctors and Nurses in ICU at High Point Regional Hospital, for their special care to Paula and to all the many others who prayed for Paula, and the family. DOBSON - Mrs. Pearlie Carlettea Childress Doss, age 103, passed away in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, February 10, 2014. She was born in Forsyth County on June 13, 1910 to the late William and Rosa Wall Childress. Mrs. Doss was a simple, godly lady who dedicated her life to her family and her service for the Lord. She was married to the love of her life, Jessie James Doss for 81 years. He preceded her in death in 2011. Together, they worked side by side reaping the harvest of the land and raising their family with strict morals and instruction. Their struggles were many, but their rewards were great.
Surviving are their children, Gladys Johnson of Dobson, Jean and husband James Robertson of Mount Airy, Brenda and husband David Allison of Thomasville and Curtis Doss of High Point; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, a daughter, Stacy Doss; two sons, Howard and Larry Doss; three sisters; three brothers and two grandsons, Mark Robertson and Ricky Johnson preceded her in death.
A funeral service to honor her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014 in the chapel of Moody-Davis Funeral Home by her beloved grandsons, the Rev Mitchell Robertson and the Rev. Hank Robertson. Burial will follow in Stony Knoll United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday February 14, 2014 and other times at the home of her home. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care for their loving and compassionate care. THOMASVILLE - Mr. Robert Franklin Walters, Sr., 73, a resident 914 Liberty Drive, died Monday, February 10, 2014 at the Henry Etta & Bruce Hinkle Hospice House. He was born on July 26, 1940 in Scotland County, NC to Art Walters and Ethel Mae Williams Walters. He worked for Triad Paper Recycling and was of the Baptist faith. He loved NASCAR racing, especially Jimmy Johnson, and was a big time wrestling fan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Lawrence, Gurley, and Cecil Walters.
Surviving are a daughter, Lisa Walters Kenney and fiancé Wayne Helms of the home; son, Robert Franklin Walters, Jr. and wife Candy of Thomasville; grandchildren, Samantha Kenney, Elizabeth Kenney, Tiffany Walters, Jessica Walters, Maddie Jones, and Tanner Walters; great-grandchildren, Sterling Holmes, Amari Williams, Samara Koontz, and Zaine Atkins; and several nieces, nephews, and a host of great friends.
