Mary Brown

THOMASVILLE — Mary Manring Brown, 75, a resident of Thomasville, died Sunday, August 10, 2014.

She was born in Stokes County on April 27, 1939, a daughter of the late Oliver Bishop Manring and Lillian Gordon Manring. Mary married Franklin Eugene Brown in March of 1955 and he preceded her in death in 1983. She was retired from Davis Furniture Company of High Point, where she was employed for many years. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Gary Eugene Brown and Everette Franklin Brown.

Surviving are her daughters, Vicky White and husband Bobby Stalbey of Trinity, Sherry Starkey of Thomasville, and Lessie Laney and husband Charles of Thomasville. Also surviving are sons, Donald Brown and wife Susan of High Point and Franklin Eugene Brown Jr. of Thomasville; sister, Pat Hinshaw and husband Paul of Trinity; brother, Winfred Ray Manring and wife Wanda of Thomasville. Mary also leaves behind 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. in J.C. Green & Sons Chapel with Rev. Bynum Orr officiating. Burial will follow in Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery in High Point. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday night from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Mary Cody

THOMASVILLE — Mrs. Mary Jane Brooks Cody, 67, a resident of Thomasville, passed away Monday, August 11, 2014 at her home.

Mrs. Cody was born on April 6, 1947 in Gaston County and was of the Baptist faith. On August 27, 1977, she married Robert Henry “Bob” Cody. She had worked for many years as an interior decorator in Gastonia. Together, she and Bob moved to Thomasville and founded Cato Transportation, which they operated for over thirty years. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cody was preceded in death by a brother, Steve Brooks.

Surviving are her husband of over 36 years, Bob Cody of the home; her daughter, Melissa Kay Duncan of Bessemer City; and grandson, Travis Duncan. Also surviving are two sisters, Ruth Ann Sisk and Betty Owens, both of Gastonia; and two brothers, Gary and Marvin Brooks, both of Gastonia.

A celebration of Mrs. Cody’s life will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 13th with her brother-in-law, Harvey Lee Cody officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A private entombment service will be held at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.

Phillip R. Dixon, Sr.

HIGH POINT — Phillip R. Dixon, Sr., 85,  died Monday at the Hospice Home at High Point. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.

 

William Howell

GEORGIA – The Rev. William Howell, 81, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, Aug. 14, at St. Mary’s Methodist Church in Columbus, Ga.

Arrangements are entrusted to Sconiers Funeral Home, 836 5th Avenue, Columbus, Georgia. Local arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service Inc. in High Point.

 

Thelma Jarvis

HIGH POINT — The Jarvis family is saddened to announce the peaceful passing of their beloved mother Thelma Talton Jarvis on Monday morning at her home in High Point, North Carolina.  Her three sons Tom, David, and Jim, and scores of family and friends, attended to her during her final days.

She was born Swannanoa Thelma Talton on September 10, 1932 in Newport News, Virginia.  Thelma graduated from Radford High School in Radford, Virginia and relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina to attend Rex Hospital School of Nursing.  After graduating she moved to Chapel Hill and worked Labor and Delivery at North Carolina Memorial Hospital.  In 1958 she and her husband, Dr. W.C. Jarvis, moved to High Point where she taught in the Nursing School at High Point Memorial Hospital while he was teaching in the Dental School at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.  She ended her nursing career working with her husband until retirement. 

Thelma was very active at Springfield Friends Meeting and enjoyed close companionships with her many friends. She was a member of two “Red Hat” societies and several exercise groups including yoga, Zumba and water aerobics.  She and two friends formed an entertainment trio, Comedy Inspirations, to encourage those that have health and age related issues.  Thelma’s Motto was “aspire to inspire before we expire.”

She was preceded into death by her mother, Swannanoa Thelma O’Neal Talton, father Thomas Evans Talton, and four brothers; Thomas, James, John, and Glenn Talton, and her husband, Dr. William C. Jarvis.

She is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Douglas (Maria) and Bobby (Betty); three sons and two daughters-in-law, Thomas Lewis Jarvis, Dr. William David Jarvis (Dr. Bennie), and James Talton Jarvis (Dana); and five grandchildren, William David, Jr., Faith Lamm O’Neal, Glenn Talton, Grayson Charles and Justin Lewis.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. the evening of Thursday August 14, 2014, at Cumby Family Funeral Service, 206 Trindale Road, Archdale, NC.

Pastor Ray Luther will conduct the service to celebrate Thelma’s life at 3:00PM on Friday August 15, 2014 at Springfield Friends Meeting, 555 E. Springfield Road, High Point, NC.  Interment will follow in in the Meeting House cemetery.

Bill Palmer

TRINITY — Mr. Bill Austin Palmer, age 80, a resident of Trinity, formerly of High Point, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2014.

He was born on August 18, 1933 in Stokes County, NC to the late Walter Palmer and Ella Durham Palmer and had been a resident of this area most of his life. He was a veteran of the US Army. He retired from Swain Originals after 40 years of service and was a lifetime member of Fairfield United Methodist Church.

Bill enjoyed spending time with his family, going to the beach and old movies. In addition to his parents preceding him in death was his wife, Betty Ward Palmer; a son, Dennis Lyle Palmer; and three brothers.

Surviving are his children, Debra Lineberry and her husband Gerald and Alan Palmer and his wife Robin and his brother, Bob Palmer.  Also surviving are his grandsons, Chad Lineberry and Adam Palmer and three great-grandchildren.

A service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock from the graveside at Fairfield United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Reverend Jill Auman officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the Randolph County Honor Guard. 

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale.

Barbara Ann Wallace

HIGH POINT — Barbara Ann Wallace, 58, with family by her side, went to be with the Lord on August 8, 2014 after her battle with cancer.

She was born in Chesterfield, S.C., but had lived in High Point for most of her life. She worked in the medical field for 40 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Queenie and Bueford Johnson of Chesterfield, SC; her daughter, April Gainey; a brother, Junior Boone; and a sister, Clarine Gaddy.

Surviving are a sister, Louise Burch of Mt. Croghan, SC; two sons, Joseph Gainey (Elisha LeBaron) and Jonathon Gainey (Marie Health); and eight grandkids. She leaves behind the love of her life of 21 years, Don Clark; two special daughters, Alura Gainey and Shatana Wallace; and two special friends, Edda Harrington and Allen McDaniel.

The service will be held at Colonial Heights Baptist Church in High Point at 3 p.m. today (Aug. 12). The pastor will be David Jones. After the service, the family will meet at 206 Charles Ave. in High Point.

GEORGIA – The Rev. William Howell, 81, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014.
