Daniel Mellinger II

WALLBURG — “Let us to endeavor to live so that when we come to die even the undertaker will be sorry.” Mark Twain
Kenneth Ray Pope, 72 , of Wallburg, did just that.
Ken died July 29, 2014.
With a smile that brightened every room and his outgoing personality, Ken had never met a stranger.
Born in High Point to Freida and Everett Pope’s large family, he was the youngest of 9 children. His parents and siblings, Marcelene, Patricia Ann, Mary Lou, Dicky and Benny are all now rejoicing with him in heaven. His sister Faye (Robert) Bowers of High Point, and brothers Bobby (Sue) Pope of Richmond, and his twin brother Oliver Taft (Francis) Pope of High Point survive him.
On October 2, 1964 Ken not only married the love of his life, Carolyn Dowdy - he gained a nine year old son, Ronald Dowdy that he loved. One year and one day later, the family welcomed his son, Kenneth Steven (Steve) Pope into the family. No children could have hoped for a more loving and fun father. Ken and the boys were active in sports, loved to go camping and to races. He treated his sons’ friends as if they were his own.
Working for 35 years in the furniture industry, he had many lifelong friends. He was also an umpire for 30+ years and delighted many with his good nature on the field.
As the years passed, his sons Ron and Steve married. Ron and Jane Dowdy had two daughters, Molly and Natalie. Steve and Sharon welcomed Sierra and Summer Pope. No other “PawPaw” could have been any more proud or thrilled with grandchildren. Likewise, he became “PawPaw Ken” to his granddaughters’ friends especially Taylor and Alyssa.
Ken’s life was represented with laughter and, that ever constant huge smile. His family wants his passing to be the same. No hushed tones in a floral scented room…no somber thoughts. Therefore, on Saturday, August 2, 2014 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. the family is celebrating his life with a “Remembrance Celebration” at the Pilot Fire Department (4205 Old Highway 29 in Thomasville). Come comfortable … with smiles and laughter.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the amazing work of Hospice of the Piedmont (High Point.)
