Police gear up for community day

Sep. 10, 2013 @ 05:23 PM

High Point Police will host their annual Community Day Saturday at the O.H. Leak Law Enforcement Center, at 1009 Leonard Ave.
The event will be held from 10 to 2 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
“We love doing this each year. It is a great way to interact with the public in a positive environment, where we are not having to go out and solve a problem,” said Robert Burchette, community outreach officer. “We get to have a good, positive, fun interaction with people we serve.”
There will be information and activities available for the public including child passenger seat safety checks, a historical High Point Police Department equipment display and I-Dent-A-Kid packets complete with fingerprinting.
There will also be a motorcycle display available for viewing out front.
Residents will have the opportunity to meet police officers, McGruff the crime dog and enjoy games, food and music.
“There will be a lot of memorabilia and a lot of historical articles on display,” Burchette said.
A tactical team demonstration will be performed at 10:30 a.m. with a “Cops vs. Kids” kickball game at 1 p.m., weather permitting.
“The game is a lot of fun and we have done it in the years past,” Burchette said.
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater High Point will partner with the department to celebrate National Day for Kids at the event.
This day is set aside each year to celebrate and honor America’s children by spending meaningful time with them, according to the Boys and Girls Club.
“Day for Kids is a national initiative that invites adults to join Boys & Girls Clubs in making a difference for kids in our community” said Boys & Girls Club of Greater High Point President and CEO Thomas Falgout. “Day for Kids is a day to bring to light the critical needs of children and call on adults to take action in support of America’s kids and since Day for Kids is always in September and the High Point Police Department holds its Community Day in September as well, what a great way to combine forces to work together in making the day a great day for all young people.”
