Woman killed in morning crash
A Clemmons woman was killed in a head-on crash on Interstate 85 Business Loop Thursday that forced the highway to shut down for several hours.
Police and rescue workers were called to the crash at around 8:34 a.m., where Courtney Ann Sanford, 32, of Clemmons, was heading north on Business 85 at Baker Road when her 2005 Toyota Carolla crossed the median into oncoming traffic. Her car slammed into a company-owned truck that was headed southbound. Police say it appeared that Sanford died upon impact.
John Wallace Thompson, 73, was driving the truck and did not appear to be injured, according to police.
The collision sent Thompson’s truck into a tree and Sanford’s car into a ditch, which ignited a small fire on the Toyota that firefighters were able to quickly put out.
Police could not confirm where the fire had ignited on Sanford’s car, but it did not cause extensive damage.
Police were still trying to determine the cause of the crash on Thursday afternoon. There was no evidence of impairing substances or excessive speeds for either driver, according to High Point police.
Police estimate the vehicles were traveling at about 45 mph upon impact.
