High Point shows again its giving nature
The city of giving has not slacked off during the Recession and recovery of the economy.
With the United Way of Greater High Point making its 2012 Campaign announcement March 6, United Way President Bobby Smith took a look at how High Point measures up.
“High Point is the only major community that is raising an ‘all-time high,’” he said. “All the others are still below their previous peaks, and they have still not bounced back from the 2008 recession.”
High Point is closest in population to Salisbury and Goldsboro and raised nearly twice what those communities raised during the 2011 campaign. In comparison to these communities and others like it such as Hickory and Burlington, High Point is the only city that raised more in its last campaign than before the economic downturn in 2008.
The city ranked third among Southeastern United Ways with the best average of Alexis de Tocqueville and Leadership donors to the 2011 Campaign. Tocqueville donors give at least $10,000 annually to a member United Way. Leadership donors give between $1,000 and $9,999.
Out of the 13 United Ways that participated in a survey, High Point ranked third with one Tocqueville donor per 1,818 residents.
High Point, Greensboro and Winston-Salem all ranked in the top five of the survey, with Winston-Salem second, High Point third and Greensboro fourth.
The Triad cities averaged more than their larger counterparts in the Triangle and Charlotte who averaged one Tocqueville member per every 18,987 residents and one per every 4,984 residents, respectively.
“High Point is one of the most generous communities,” Smith said. “We’ll never have as many Tocqueville donors as some of those other communities, but per capita we rank extremely high. We’re so far ahead, it’s striking.”
United Way will make its 2012 campaign announcement on March 6 at 5:30 p.m. at High Point University’s Phillips Hall.
