Get ready for lane closings on I-85 Business

The N.C. Department of Transportation will close lanes on Interstate 85 Business Loop during the next month to install median bridge piers as part of the project to replace the overpass on Surrett Drive.
The new span is being constructed adjacent to the existing bridge. The new span is expected to be open to traffic by Nov. 1, according to the DOT.
Crews will close the left lane in each direction of I-85 Business Loop starting this week, weather permitting, to install the bridge piers. The affected lanes will remain closed through May 24.
“The existing bridge was built in 1953 and is considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. This means the bridge is safe, but it needs to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands,” according to the DOT.
The Surrett Drive project is part of the DOT’s $450 million state-funded bridge plan for 2011-13, which calls for preservation, repairs or replacement of bridges statewide. The $3.6 million contract was awarded to Yates Construction Co. Inc. of Stokesdale in August 2012.
