Guilford County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man Thursday afternoon on charges related to bringing a loaded gun on the Southern Guilford High School campus. The man is an adult and is not a Southern High student.
Police received a 911 call Thursday afternoon alerting them that someone was coming on campus with a weapon in a vehicle. They immediately contacted the Southern High School Resource Officer, who notified the principal. The school enacted its safety plan, which included locking down the building. This happened after buses left campus, so the majority of people impacted were staff and some student-athletes.
Deputies found a vehicle matching the 911 caller’s description and arrested the driver. The driver was charged with possession of a weapon on campus and carrying a concealed weapon.
“GCS’ top priority is the safety of our students and staff, and the school safety plan worked exactly as it should. GCS is grateful that someone called police about this situation,” GCS representatives said in a press release. “Communication in our schools and community is the best way to keep our students safe.”
The GCS school safety office will continue working closely with law enforcement during the investigation. The Southern High principal sent a phone message to all families Thursday afternoon.
