Southwest Jets practice with Panthers

More than 100 kids ran drills and threw passes with members of the Carolina Panthers Monday. The Southwest Jets program partnered with NFL Play 60 to provide High Point area youth with a mini camp complete with drills with members of the NFL.

NFL Play 60 is a national youth health and fitness campaign focused on increasing the wellness of young fans by encouraging them to be active for at least 60 minutes a day. The event, held at Southwest High School, was free for the youth.

The Southwest Jets program uses athletics as a platform for excellence, promoting dedication to the classroom, family, and then of course, on the playing field.

“The Jets volunteers are simply amazing and want their kids to have the best their hard work can give,” said Brandon Negron, founding member and senior adviser. “The people I have had the pleasure of building this program with are as dedicated as any individuals I have ever met in the youth athletics arena.”

One of the pleased parents is Katie Heineman, who has 8- and 5-year-old sons in the program. “They’ve learned a lot about teamwork,” she said. Her oldest son is working toward being a high school football player.

“I’ve seen my kids grow,” said Joey Mcginnis, parent of an 8-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter in the program. “The way I raise them is how the program is ran.”

A good bond between parents and coaches doesn’t hurt either. “There is great communication between coaches and team moms,” said Heineman. “We’ve all had great relationships.

“It’s like one big family,” said Mcginnis.

The Jets work closely with Southwest Guilford High School, and the growth of the program has attracted football camps to the community including Monday’s NFL Play 60. Southwest Jets’s next football and cheer camp will be held July 14.
