Local statement on tragedy
Statement from Nora K. Carr, Chief of Staff, Guilford County Schools
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families, and to our fellow educators and emergency responders who are dealing with this tragedy. We will never understand why the individual responsible chose to do this. No answer we receive will ever be sufficient to explain the terrible loss of life and innocence that occurred today at Sandy Hook Elementary. While we pause and remember the victims, we are also reminded that life is fleeting, and that we must cherish every moment we have with our loved ones.
At GCS, like schools and school districts across the nation, we make every effort to keep our students safe. Security plans and measures are important, and we make sure we have those in place. We also work closely with local law enforcement and the county emergency management office. That said, the most important security measure isn’t found in metal detectors, but in building caring relationships with each other, and in sharing information and concerns with the proper authorities. That’s why confidential tip lines like Crime Stoppers are so important. It’s too early to know whether someone knew something in this situation and didn’t think it was worth sharing, as has been the case in other school shootings. we sincerely hope not. But the greatest deterrents often are information and communication.”
