High Point Fire Department has a new deputy fire chief.
Tim Wright has been promoted to the position of deputy fire chief following the promotion of Fire Chief Tommy Reid.
Reid replaced Rick McIntyre who resigned July 23 after being with the department for a little over a year.
“I’m excited and amazed that I got this opportunity and I am going to try and take full advantage of it,” Wright said. “I want to see if myself and Chief Reid can’t bring back the pride in this place. That is our biggest goal right now.”
High Point Fire Chief Tommy Reid said that Wright is crucial to the department’s success.
“As the deputy chief of the High Point Fire Department, his continued support, commitment and loyalty will be paramount in the success of our organization as we move forward,” Reid said.
Wright, a High Point native, began working with the department in 1995 as a firefighter. He quickly rose through the ranks becoming a driver, a captain and a battalion chief before being tapped for his new position.
He received an associates degree in Fire Protection Technology from Forsyth Tech in 2004. He is a Hazardous Material Technician and technician level diver with the department’s Water Rescue team. He has been in charge of the team since he was promoted to battalion chief in 2011.
He has also serves as chairman of the safety committee.
“I actually started out as a volunteer firefighter down in Durham when I lived there,” Wright said. “I was a captain when I left and when I moved back home, I applied here. There is something about being in your hometown.”
Wright said he plans to hit the ground running in his new position and he plans to make the best of it.
“I feel like I have been given a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Wright said. “I plan to give all I have to make this department successful. We have a lot of great men and women here and we are here to support them and make sure they have the tools, training and equipment they need.”
Wright graduated from T. Wingate Andrews in 1976 and graduated from High Point College in 1981 with a degree in Business Administration. He and his wife, Mary Elizabeth, live in High Point. They have two children Andrew and Kendall, and a daughter-in-law, Heather.
He is a member of Christ United Methodist Church. He has volunteered with the Salvation Army and YMCA. He is a member of the High Point Elks Lodge and has coached in the High Point Little League.
