High Point ranks high in charitable giving

When it comes to giving, High Point ranks near the top of the list.
Among Southeastern United Ways, the city ranks third with the best average of Alexis de Tocqueville and Leadership donors to the 2011 Campaign. Tocqueville donors give at least $10,000 annually to a member United Way. Leadership donors give between $1,000 and $9,999.
Out of the 13 United Ways that participated in a survey, High Point ranked third with one Tocqueville donor per 1,818 residents. The 2011 campaign collected $4.6 million, nearly $20,000 more than the goal and the highest in United Way of Greater High Point’s 70-year history.
Tocqueville Society members donated 37 percent of the campaigns equalling to more than $1.7 million. High Point, Greensboro and Winston-Salem all ranked in the top five of the survey, with Winston-Salem second, High Point third and Greensboro fourth.
The Triad cities averaged more than their larger counterparts in the Triangle and Charlotte, who averaged one Tocqueville member per every 18,987 residents and one per every 4,984 residents, respectively.
“High Point is one of the most generous communities,” said local United Way President Bobby Smith. “We’ll never have as many Tocqueville donors as some of those other communities, but per capita we rank extremely high. We’re so far ahead, it’s striking.”
The Triad’s charitable giving to United Way for its 2011 campaign amounted to more than $32.5 million for its partner agencies. Smith also attributed Chris Greene, chairperson of the Tocqueville campaign, and local media with its success.
“Chris Greene worked tirelessly on the campaign.” Smith said. “Also, I’m convinced that Tocqueville members read the paper and see the good that United Way agencies are doing, and there’s a direct connection between that and their donations.”
UWGHP is nearing its ambitious 2012 Campaign goal of $4.7 million with the help of several businesses and donors to help its 29 partner agencies.
